The birds are endangered, so we weren't allowed to molest them in any way. When an airplane (I flew C-130s) was about to land, the Sailors would drive a pickup truck up the runway, gently picking up birds and depositing them in the pickup bed. They would drive to the other side of the island and open the tailgate. The birds would hop out and saunter back toward the runway. This gave us about a 20 minute window to land without hitting an endangered, turkey sized albatross.
I think god put the gooney birds on this planet for human entertainment, I spent a day on Midway back in 90' spent most of the time laughing watching these wonderful bird's attempting to walk, land and take off,, in the air they know their buisneess, on the ground, thats a differednt story
Anoying birds that nested wherever they wanted and you had to find a way to walk around them without coming close enough for them to peck you. I was only on Midway for 54 hours back in 1981 but I remember the birds very well. I was assigned to Isolated duty station Midway Island out of boot camp but they changed my orders the day after I got them and did not bother to tell me or cancel my travel plans so I went out there spent a couple days and came back to Socal
The US Fish and Wildlife has restrictions in place that limit a person's ability to visit Midway. Please contact the FWS concerning visitation. barbara_maxfield@fws,gov

They are socializing. The dance is also a courtship dance, but they dance all year long. I have even witnessed them doing their dance at sea.
