All without a Iron roughneck or spinner.. all chain and tongs, day and night, night and day and covered in pipe dope and mud..ah.. those were the days...
spinning chain is outlawed here in alberta..i dunno bout the states, but we use pipe spinners, ive only ever used spinning chain a hand-full of times....not as easy as it looks boys

The way these guys work on a fucking rig is just about as retarded as me sending my 3 year old daughter out on a rig. I have never seen anyone as idiotic, the guys I work with and my self are not a bunch of red neck drunks as these guys make all roughnecks appear to be.

@waldemar747 When you are tripping, the top drive is disengaged so thats out of the equation. Iron roughnecks are utilized for safety, not speed. With the iron roughneck you must first break the joint in 1st gear; then the machine must be stopped for a moment to change gears. Once turning the roughneck is still slower than a good chain. An experienced crew can break the joimnt and immediatley spin the pipe with chain almost simultaneously.
@waldemar747 Tripping speed can also be increased by spinning your string with the kelly whille in the slips; (Cannot be done efficiently on a long string). Powered slips are much safer but I am not aware of any powered sliips that can rotate with the kelly bushing.
