What brilliant opening title music. Iconic to the programme unlike nowadays where it's just a case of lifting tracks from popular chart music, a la Sky Sports Super Sunday etc.
Aaahhhhhhhhh I remember this tune coming from downstairs as I was lying in my bed as a wee boy and I agree with JAYROX1969 sky has fucked the whole world of TV sport up - F1 going to sky now - We all need to get Greek satellite TV and put make the cunts bring the prices down!
goodness this takes me to a time when sport wasnt influenced and ruined by money and big corperate companies. i used to love watching the footie and boxing on here. john conti, dave boy green, tony sibbo sibson and so on. good times and great intro music.
loool....what a tune. I'd almost forgot about this completely.......Couldn't wait for this to start on wednesday evenings, after listening to the football commentaries on the radio....Even better when the team you supported won, and you wanted to see the goals
still got a vid tape of my dads, with the 1973 greyhound final followed by carlisle v middlesboro in the 1st division from that night . stuart boam scored for boro!!!!!!
Brilliant. The excitement of being allowed to stop up to watch it on a school night was great! Four slices of mothers pride toast and a glass of banana Nesquick in front of highlights of Liverpool vs Zurich in the European Cup. Wonderful days.
@JAYROX1969 Yup. Imagine how it would be if Sportsnight were still around now. A fun-packed evening of cross country running, the world draughts tournament live from Helsinki, and the latest action action in relay racing.
The full version of this tune is brilliant. Someone did a great remix once (and I've said this before) but I STILL don't know the artist. It was really superb. Perhaps it was just the full version of this (which would be be good enough) but I don't think so - it was more jazzy.
As a treat we watched the football, Liverpool, Man Utd, Ipswich, Forest all in Europe, the mid-week cup replays involving Exeter, Blythe Spartans with your tea and toast. And what a great theme tune.
The 70's version used to feature a big set of floodlights going around the screen....I normally bribed mum and dad with a cup of coffee and a tray of biccies so I could watch whatever was on !
lol. Sportsnight was great, wasn't it? Grandstand was shit because it was mainly horse racing but Sportsnight gave us the only real chance to watch boxing & football. Marvellous!
Harry Carpenter, David Coleman, Peter O'Sullevan, Dan Maskell. The BBC cornered the market in the finest sports commentators in the history of television.
Football has reached saturation point, you can't turn a tvon without the highlights of every premier league game that was played 24 hours previously. I loved Sportsnight, and got my dad to video it whatever match was on, as it was a novelty.
Sportsnight and Midweek special were the nuts because there was'nt a live match every day of the week..thats what made it special.Who the hell watches Burton Albion v Cambridge live..errr Burton Albion & Cambridge supporters of course ! Jesus in the old days you couldnt even see the goals from half the 1st division matches from most weekends ! Still if we had seen them..footy probably would have seemed as dull as it is now..bar the odd champions league and premier match featuring the big 4.
sportsnight was the bollocks.me and brothers used to stay up late on a school night and watch the midweek football.does anybody remember midweek sports special on itv in the 80s.
I do and have been searching for it so i can hear the theme again, remembering it was quite good.Used to stay up in the 70s, when a kid,to watch "Sportsnight with Coleman".Can't envisage the "future nostalgia" with what's shown today.
I absolutely love this tune : it's so dramatic ! Somebody did a great, great remix of this once, which I used to have on my old Pentium II computer. I can't find it anywhere but would love to hear it again.
Yep - it was basically on after all the serious news programmes had ended. But it was just a relief to see something sporty in the middle of the week when even libraries observed half-day closing!!
Nice theme tune...love it!!!!!!!! Even though I was too young at the time to stay up late and watch this programme in its heyday, I always remembered the theme tune.
Remember Harry presenting it and Steve Rider took over before it finished it was always on late but as i got a bit older i could stay up and watch it remember watching the Live Derby (Greyhound) race thinking live sport at this time GREAT even though it was only Greyhounds lol. But you did have to wait for the football which in todays market you wouldn't which is wrong to much is now on football!!!!!!!
quite right m8, all you got here(scotland) was sat night highlights of one game and an english 1st div game (now premiership a live scottich and league cup final and sportsnight! with highlights of an english game after, as you mentioned, skating !!!
TV OVERKILL HAS FUCKED UP FOOTIE.
Look at the game now.just about every EVERY FA cup game live, live premiership games all week and highlights of the rest.its a joke
amazing upload, todays young football fans wouldn't believe how annoying it was to want to see your teams highlights but have to weight until the ice skating from northampton or something simlar was over!!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Hey grandad, instead of watching the ice skating you could always read some Chomsky whilst you wait /weight/ wayte for another dazzling Eurpopean performance from the mighty Emlyn.....or was he gone by then? I dunno, and don't care I was watching Aunt Peg on Betamax videos instead
I thought Sportsnight was on a thursday night??. I might be wrong. Anyway, Sportsnight, our 'Arry, then bed, then school. :-( Ahh the memories, sitting here as an " old man" now. lol. Great theme by the way.
Love "you tube", for trips down memory lane, used to go to my grannies on a wednesday, was only about 11 or 12, watched The Benny Hill show, then Sportsnight, remember great nights of action, Big Frank Bruno, Liverpool, West Brom, Spurs in Europe, great times
The boxing theme tune for Sportsnight was even better. Lots of deep dramatic piano notes. Reminds me of the Frank Bruno and Harry Carpenter days. Please post if you have it!
And there's nothing like that theme tune by Tony Hatch and his Orchestra. Kicks the living shit out of all the others. And I have the full 1967 composition. So come on then, who wants it? Form an orderly queue!
I've heard the full length version, and... I prefer this one. The problem is that, yeah, it's cool and all that, but you're basically waiting three minutes for the pay-off "Da-da da-da da-da-da-da" at the end. It's not fair to tease people for that long ;-)
Well, I disagree, of course! ;) One thing I will say, though, is that the theme heard here is pacier than the full version, which has more space to 'breathe' and takes its time. Horses for courses, I guess.
Tony Hatch - composer of many a classic hit theme tune: Emmerdale, Crossroads, Neighbours, etc. He also wrote hit records like Downtown and Music to Watch Girls By.
This clip was almost certainly lifted from the TV Ark website (before it was closed for reconstruction last year and has only re-opened in part). Not that I'm complaining! :)

It was great for British Boxing, Alan Minter,Charlie Magri, Maurice Hope etc appeared regularly
