  • This tune should replace 'God save the queen' as the national anthem.....

  • What brilliant opening title music. Iconic to the programme unlike nowadays where it's just a case of lifting tracks from popular chart music, a la Sky Sports Super Sunday etc.

  • Memories, I remember being allowed to sometimes stay up late to watch this show.

It was great for British Boxing, Alan Minter,Charlie Magri, Maurice Hope etc appeared regularly

No pay per view just great fights in smoke filled halls..

  • Tonight, from Luton! Highlights from the British light-welterweight boxing championship semi-finals!

  • Aaahhhhhhhhh I remember this tune coming from downstairs as I was lying in my bed as a wee boy and I agree with JAYROX1969 sky has fucked the whole world of TV sport up - F1 going to sky now - We all need to get Greek satellite TV and put make the cunts bring the prices down!

  • Absolutely class opening credit tune - takes me back to childhood knowing it must be very late at night!

  • Good evenin 'Arry

  • This was when you were a kid you got your parents to tape the programme on a school night so you could watch it the next day

  • Gosh I remember this from the early 80s

  • Man...UK had all the great sports TV themes. Wish the networks here in the USA could have borrowed this for something.

  • if anyone has livrpool v leeds fairs cup highlights would appreciate,i remember watcing the anfield tie on sportsnight 1971

  • goodness this takes me to a time when sport wasnt influenced and ruined by money and big corperate companies. i used to love watching the footie and boxing on here. john conti, dave boy green, tony sibbo sibson and so on. good times and great intro music.

    thanks

    ATVmidlands

  • they don't make theme tunes like this anymore

  • loool....what a tune. I'd almost forgot about this completely.......Couldn't wait for this to start on wednesday evenings, after listening to the football commentaries on the radio....Even better when the team you supported won, and you wanted to see the goals

  • still got a vid tape of my dads, with the 1973 greyhound final followed by carlisle v middlesboro in the 1st division from that night . stuart boam scored for boro!!!!!!

  • Magic 80s

  • Rest in Peace Harry,....thanks for the memories

  • Rest in peace, Harry

  • R.I.P Harry, we'll miss you.

  • RIP Harry, sorely missed.....:(

  • Very sad day Harry passed away.

    Greatest boxing commentator there was.

"I've been hit by a bottle" Minter v. Hagler

    God bless you "Arry

  • I remember that one too, I was only 9....hate to say it but I found it hilarious at the time! Too young and stupid.

But what a great commentator. RIP Harry!

  • R.I.P Harry Carpenter. Thanks for the memories!

  • god rest arry...rip

  • RIP Harry Carpenter

  • RIP Harry Carpenter the best boxing commentator I ever heard

  • R.I.P. Harry.

  • R.I.P. Harry.

  • Brilliant. The excitement of being allowed to stop up to watch it on a school night was great! Four slices of mothers pride toast and a glass of banana Nesquick in front of highlights of Liverpool vs Zurich in the European Cup. Wonderful days.

  • Always plenty of football and boxing on Sportsnight, then sky came along and fucked it all up.

  • @JAYROX1969 too true!!!!!

  • @JAYROX196 so fucking true mate

  • @JAYROX1969 Your right sport on tv was so much more simple back then. Miss those days. Thanks Murdoch you bastard!

  • @carrroad

I'm still a Saturday at 3pm man for domestic football, can't be bothered with these boring 7.45 Monday matches where the grounds are half empty.

  • @JAYROX1969 Here here!!!

  • @JAYROX1969 Yup. Imagine how it would be if Sportsnight were still around now. A fun-packed evening of cross country running, the world draughts tournament live from Helsinki, and the latest action action in relay racing.

  • @JAYROX1969

....not if you've got the big bucks...unlike me :-(

  • Another classic theme! :D

  • Wonderfully nostalgic.

    Sky Sports? Sigh.........

  • does anyone have the audio of the old BBC boxing theme ?

  • The full version of this tune is brilliant. Someone did a great remix once (and I've said this before) but I STILL don't know the artist. It was really superb. Perhaps it was just the full version of this (which would be be good enough) but I don't think so - it was more jazzy.

  • Very nostalgic.

I used to ask my mum & dad if I could stay up and watch it, usually Notts Forest or Liverpool in the European cup in those days, late 70s early 80s.

  • As a treat we watched the football, Liverpool, Man Utd, Ipswich, Forest all in Europe, the mid-week cup replays involving Exeter, Blythe Spartans with your tea and toast. And what a great theme tune.

  • Sadly axed in 1998 when the BBC realised there wasn't enough sport to show on it, except snooker.

  • The 70's version used to feature a big set of floodlights going around the screen....I normally bribed mum and dad with a cup of coffee and a tray of biccies so I could watch whatever was on !

  • lol. Sportsnight was great, wasn't it? Grandstand was shit because it was mainly horse racing but Sportsnight gave us the only real chance to watch boxing & football. Marvellous!

  • Remember listening on the stairs and looking through a gap in the front room door after being sent to bed-loved wednesday nights in the early 70's

  • was the same in the mid 80s mate dont u worry....

    "mum i cant sleep"

"well just lay in bed son!"

  • Reminds me of nervously waiting for the footie results.

  • where can you get this version from? The theme commercially available of this is a different arrangement.

  • Harry Carpenter, David Coleman, Peter O'Sullevan, Dan Maskell. The BBC cornered the market in the finest sports commentators in the history of television.

  • Football has reached saturation point, you can't turn a tvon without the highlights of every premier league game that was played 24 hours previously. I loved Sportsnight, and got my dad to video it whatever match was on, as it was a novelty.

  • Sportsnight and Midweek special were the nuts because there was'nt a live match every day of the week..thats what made it special.Who the hell watches Burton Albion v Cambridge live..errr Burton Albion & Cambridge supporters of course ! Jesus in the old days you couldnt even see the goals from half the 1st division matches from most weekends ! Still if we had seen them..footy probably would have seemed as dull as it is now..bar the odd champions league and premier match featuring the big 4.

  • sportsnight was the bollocks.me and brothers used to stay up late on a school night and watch the midweek football.does anybody remember midweek sports special on itv in the 80s.

  • I do and have been searching for it so i can hear the theme again, remembering it was quite good.Used to stay up in the 70s, when a kid,to watch "Sportsnight with Coleman".Can't envisage the "future nostalgia" with what's shown today.

  • Now we have the shitty INSIDE SPORT, what re the BBC trying to prove? They can make shitty shows?

I mean Soccer AM thrashes Football Focus, INSIDE SPORT is a waterdowned version of Sky Sports News!

  • great bass line.

  • One of the best!!

  • Ah yes, football, boxing...greyhound racing...memories indeed!

  • I absolutely love this tune : it's so dramatic ! Somebody did a great, great remix of this once, which I used to have on my old Pentium II computer. I can't find it anywhere but would love to hear it again.

  • Used to shown on a Wed Night bout 1030ish?

  • Yep - it was basically on after all the serious news programmes had ended. But it was just a relief to see something sporty in the middle of the week when even libraries observed half-day closing!!

  • I remember the libraries half day closing..... en all must be showing my age.

  • Nice theme tune...love it!!!!!!!! Even though I was too young at the time to stay up late and watch this programme in its heyday, I always remembered the theme tune.

They don't make 'em like they used to...

  • Remember Harry presenting it and Steve Rider took over before it finished it was always on late but as i got a bit older i could stay up and watch it remember watching the Live Derby (Greyhound) race thinking live sport at this time GREAT even though it was only Greyhounds lol. But you did have to wait for the football which in todays market you wouldn't which is wrong to much is now on football!!!!!!!

  • Great Stuff(the great Harry Carpenter) before the BBC totally lost it!

  • Da-da-da-da-da da-da-da-da-da daaaaa da da-da-da-da-da da-da-da-da-da daaaa dat da-da-da da-da-da daa daa daaaaa... Great tv theme.

  • Love this.

  • Great theme tune. Always reminds me of the Frank Bruno fights they showed on Sportsnight in the early 1980s.

  • they mainly used a different theme for boxing, it was deep piano keys. a great theme.

  • For me it was all about asking the parents if I could be allowed to stay up and watch the European midweek games!

  • quite right m8, all you got here(scotland) was sat night highlights of one game and an english 1st div game (now premiership a live scottich and league cup final and sportsnight! with highlights of an english game after, as you mentioned, skating !!!

TV OVERKILL HAS FUCKED UP FOOTIE.

Look at the game now.just about every EVERY FA cup game live, live premiership games all week and highlights of the rest.its a joke

  • amazing upload, todays young football fans wouldn't believe how annoying it was to want to see your teams highlights but have to weight until the ice skating from northampton or something simlar was over!!

  • The theme tunes of the programmes in tha past were great!! The past day theme tunes are so damn crap!!!

  • I thought Sportsnight was on a thursday night??. I might be wrong. Anyway, Sportsnight, our 'Arry, then bed, then school. :-( Ahh the memories, sitting here as an " old man" now. lol. Great theme by the way.

  • al get sent to bed any minute!just you watch

  • this theme rocks!!!!sportsnight was cool!!

  • oh yes

  • Love "you tube", for trips down memory lane, used to go to my grannies on a wednesday, was only about 11 or 12, watched The Benny Hill show, then Sportsnight, remember great nights of action, Big Frank Bruno, Liverpool, West Brom, Spurs in Europe, great times

  • Fantastic theme tune ..Best ever .

    Nice one Carhandle.

  • Thrash xylophone rocks man.

  • great bass line

  • its 82 idiot

  • I think the graphics still look good today

  • Nice one!

  • The boxing theme tune for Sportsnight was even better. Lots of deep dramatic piano notes. Reminds me of the Frank Bruno and Harry Carpenter days. Please post if you have it!

  • GENIUS! Know what i mean 'arry

  • And there's nothing like that theme tune by Tony Hatch and his Orchestra. Kicks the living shit out of all the others. And I have the full 1967 composition. So come on then, who wants it? Form an orderly queue!

  • I've heard the full length version, and... I prefer this one. The problem is that, yeah, it's cool and all that, but you're basically waiting three minutes for the pay-off "Da-da da-da da-da-da-da" at the end. It's not fair to tease people for that long ;-)

  • Well, I disagree, of course! ;) One thing I will say, though, is that the theme heard here is pacier than the full version, which has more space to 'breathe' and takes its time. Horses for courses, I guess.

  • Tony Hatch - composer of many a classic hit theme tune: Emmerdale, Crossroads, Neighbours, etc. He also wrote hit records like Downtown and Music to Watch Girls By.

  • He also composed another of my Hatchet-Man favourites: Hadleigh. Got the full, clean version of that, too! :)

  • Nothing like Harry Carpenter!

  • Those were the days !!!

  • sweet! thanks

  • great great tune from the days when the BBC had decent sport

  • Oh my God, I can't believe somebody found this!

  • This clip was almost certainly lifted from the TV Ark website (before it was closed for reconstruction last year and has only re-opened in part). Not that I'm complaining! :)
