Bridge to Terabithia (5th grade), The Giver (okay, when we read that in 7th grade everyone laughed at the Stirring scene), The Scarecrow Walks at Midnight (6th grade), The Witches (K), Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince (6th), James and the Giant Peach (K), A Light in the Attic (4th), Where's Waldo Now (forever), The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (5th), I've read them all and they're perfectly fine! It's totally stupid to ban these books! Freedom of speech means freadom too, you got that?

But when I was in 6th grade, I knew every swear word in the book and knew all about sex. I think they ban books for stupid reasons.

YES... We need lists like this to show our children WHAT TO READ and open a dialogue about why some grown up was afraid, racist, intolerant, ignorant, or anti-??????. In a world where so many can't read, it is a shame to limit options because of one word, attitude, circumstance or scene that, in many cases, was written perfectly in line with the mores of the times or precisely because the characters' actions reflect human nature and the foibles, follies, and lessons we all can learn from.

Different countries, different states and even different counties/districts ban a multitude of books, I'm guessing this list is a generalization of nationwide averages. I too have read a number of these books in school and have had discussions on their banning.

half the books on the banned books list are books that are both intellectually stimulating and very entertaining for kids and young adults. it's really rare to get such a great combo. banning these books are like encouraging kids not to read. the news and their reports on rape and murder are not any more less graphic than these books. those who lobby for these books to be banned are probably the same ones buying violent video games for their kids and telling them that slavery was just a myth.

Goosebumps was banned because for being too scary for children. Judy Blume has been a frequent target - for sexual situations and the popular "unsuited to age group". Cather in the Rye? Vulgar, sexual situations, moral issues, violence and dealings with the occult.

books are banned not by librarians but by individuals because the individuals for whatever reason decide the book should be banned, most of the time without reading it before deciding it needs to be banned.

If a book isn't in a library, it's because a librarian made the final decision to pull it from the shelf. Taxpaying individuals can challenge a book's inclusion but have no power to ban any book. That's why the emphasis has shifted from "banned books" to "challenged books." Otherwise, the ALA would have to address its own repressive practices that keep new books from small publishers out of libraries.
