this will make a huge difference. all you need to worry about when striking the ball is your technique. don't worry about punishing the ball with as much power as you can. just simply look where you want to put it and hit the ball the correct way and it will get there.

the rubber coating would be for the grip and the smoothness is to create greater differential pressures to aid in curving the ball. the roundness also aids in curving and i bet it probably has syntactic foam or something better to improve strike elasticity. having a near seamless ball also reduces drag somewhat, although drag is a tricky thing, sometimes uniform pockmarks like on a golf ball are better.
