About Pawn Shops : Pawn Shop forms & Stolen Items

I got robbed by a Greyhound employee in Shreveport, LA.

One of the employees went through my luggage and stole a TV set and video game system.

I'm trying to get compensation back from Greyhound but to no avail.

I filed a police report, but have gotten no word back yet?

Should I call a pawn shop in Shreveport or what?

What do you guys recommend?

What always irked me is that Pawn shops are exempt from the law that says you cannot buy stolen goods, rather you know it it stolen or not.

If the average Joe on the street buys something that later turns out to be stolen & gets caught, that person can be convicted of recieving stolen property, but a pawn shop cannot, so WTF is with them being any better ?

Then yes, I loose the gun, but I dont get charged with theft by recieving. But if you dont get a bill of sale, then you can be. Thats the difference. If I buy anything from anyone anywhere I ALWAYS get a bill of sale.!

@sphinxrising58 Actually I do doubt you, and I did call my state police. As long as I have a bill of sale stating who I bought it from. I will not be charged with recieving stolen property. The reason why, I dont really know, but It has been varified by my state as well as local police. Then of course you get into them actually needing a search warrant, and probable cause, but that is a completely different matter.

@sphinxrising58 Thats correct, the item may question but what it does do is prove that I didnt steal it, since I have a receipt, (either from an individual, that has been notarized or from a business) It also points the police in the direction that the merch came from. Now im not saying I get to keep the property, and that I cannot sue in civil court. But it does protect me from being charged with theft by recieving.According to my attorney general.

Pawn shops get a bad rap from Hollywood. They paint a picture of a dimly lit back-door operation. They do require ID, do have to run things through police (the PD has a pawn shop division), and can be very helpful. They don't give much for 2 reasons #1 They want you to pay them back #2 They may need to re-sell the item if you don't. No cred check loans, and most will work with you if you try.

Most people know nothing about how they work, but still speak down on them.

That is not perfectly accurate. You can resell an original copy of software if you delete the copy you installed on your computer. Or you can resell your computer with software installed and include the original copy of the software in the sale. Doing so is not illegal, however some software makers can refuse to provide tech suport, upgrades, updates etc. The definition of pirated software is software that has been coppied and sold as though it were an original retail copy.

Well, that is not intirely accurate, as just because you purchase a copy of software, does not mean you actually own that software, as what you really bought was the right to use that software, as as the companies & people that make software call it, a license.

Most software I have ever purchased states right in the EULA that the software remans thier property, & that it cannot be copied, distributed, or transfered to another party.

You said it yourself xXIvy. They would be stupid. WE (Pawnbrokers) go to court, help prosecute thieves and HELP recover any stolen items. Yes there have been some items "successfully returned to an owner" but across the US, there is ONE HALF OF ONE PERCENT of stolen items that end up in a pawnshop. If anyone wants to find their stuff? Try eBay, Craigslist, or a "second hand" shop that do NOT report to the police dept.

That is VERY BAD advice. A few years ago I found ALL of my stolen items at a pawn shop two days after I was burglarized. The police recovered everything except one silver dollar worth $20. The pawn shop owner is now serving his 4th year in prison with 3 more to go before he comes up for parole again. I never found out who broke into my place though.  The police told me they believe that probably HALF of all merchandise in all pawn shops are stolen.

ok lets say you paid $200. retail for an item say a camera and when the new model comes out the one you bought drops in price to $120 still new. a pawn shop would loan you $40 if you do not pick it up the shop would sell it for $75. its not the pawn shops fault you pay retail for stuff. the bank charges you $30 if you bounce a $20 check it only cost a couple bucks to borrow $20 from a pawn shop

The way it works is you bring down an item you want to sell, lets say you have a Movado watch which you bought for $600, you would get anywhere from $50 to $100 from the pawn shop. They give you half(some give a third) of what they would sell something for.

Also to buy stuff you do not need to have an id or anything, but usually most shops require you to be 18+ to enter in alone. You can get some great deals at pawn shops.

Not always true, I have a customer who regularly buys laptops on craigslist and resells them or sometimes pawns for quick cash. A few weeks ago one of his laptops ended up being stolen and he just talked with the cops about it and told them where he bought it, they didnt even ask for any proof of sale from him lol.

There are always homeless/druggies/transients who would be happy to earn 5 bucks by pawning something for you, and usually they are on skid row right near most pawnshop. Also, there are pawnshops that welcome stolen goods and don't ask for ID and do not enter every item in their computer, thus not on the police report. As in everything else, there are good guys and there are bad guys
