GOD LIVES COOL SRV WAS THE BEST NO ONE COULD MATCH THIS MANS PLAYING HE TOPS EVEN HENDRIX IN MY OPINION THOUGH SRV WOULD NEVER ADMIT THAT I THINK HE KNEW HOW GREAT HE HAD BECOME SRV WAS GOD
I know a lot of his fans will disagree here... I think SRV was a pretty good blues guitarist but, there have been and, are many, many others just as good and even better... What I respected most about him was that he worked hard and played a lot of shows; almost tirelessly, in the same kind of fashion as bands like the Grateful Dead... They'd play anywhere, anytime and that, to me, made him a great performer and a legend... RIP Stevie...
@laydbakk1 There have been many great blues guitar players, but you are listening to the Master, none can match his feel and emotion, he brought the blues to the big stage in the 80's when music was dominated by new wave and keyboard based music as well as gay hair bands..no small feat, the other blues greats owe him a huge debt because they would still be broke and playing small clubs, Stevie payed respects to all the blues greats but he is the greatest ever!
Notice that at 4:05 he steps on an Octavia-like device (of which Prescription Electronics made a beauty ) so that, while he's playing around the 14th fret it sounds as if he's 'way up the neck.
Playing his "first wife" (probably the "saddest" looking guitar I have ever seen--varnish and wood worn off!), chewing gum and totally blowing everyone away. WOW!! RIP, Stevie Ray.
How can anyone have watched this entire video and still said that? Unreal.
Besides, Clapton has said in multiple interviews that he wondered if he "would ever get to that point" (Stevie's level of talent), and mentioned that he had to walk away from Stevie's set (at Alpine Valley) just so he could build up the courage to go on after him. I can confirm both of those statements with video proof.
Clapton is Top-5 all time, but behind SRV and Hendrix.
@cavalrytm prove it.....only saying that cause I've never seen that footage and would like to see it. Please send it to me if you still have it. Thanks!
@cavalrytm I was just looking for the videos of when you said clapton said he "wondered if he would ever get to that point" and how he had to walk away from stevies set at alpine valley.
Some of these things I am having trouble tracking down, because you just can't find it by typing those words into a search field. However, I do know for a fact that if you watch a couple video clips from the SRV tribute concert, specifically Eric Clapton's segment, he does mention that he had to walk away from Stevie's set in order to preserve his own sanity. I know he mentioned this in an another interview somewhere, but I can't find it. At least this one is on youtube!
Ok, here. He says at the end of this video that he had to walk away from Stevie's set because otherwise he wouldn't have been able to go on after him, and would have "run away".
@cavalrytm Cool thanks. I'm a huge fan of Stevie and Clapton so just wanted to check it out. I actually have the tribute DVD too but don't remember seeing that part. Thanks!
Backstage at Alpine Valley after Stevie Ray Vaughan's set was over, Eric Clapton told Stevie straight up that he was " the greatest guitar player [he] ever heard". That's a documented statement from Stevie's official biographer.
Just one more thing. I remember after stevie got of stage I went to the fence on the right side of the stage facing the stage because we were in the front and as we stood there looking for steveie to go by out of a tralor came none other then Phil graham this was just a couple of months before he too died in a helicopter crash. Of coare deid the same way a few years later.
I was there also. anyone remember how he nded the set. He only played about 3 or 4 songs. Then he stopped the set saying," thats it folks Its to damned hot out here get out of the sun". or somthing like that i know he stopped bercause it was too hot. And I do remember it being hot because I remeber some ladys giving us ice a towels to put over my sons head because of the heat.
just when I think I've seen the best Stevie performances around, another comes along and blows me away, his playing is very different here, this is post rehab, this is stevie clean playing with a clear head, imagine the music he would have bought us had he lived!....I hate helicopters!!
September 22nd 1989, Dallas Texas... I was there!!! Fabulous Thunderbirds opened for SRV. He opened for THE WHO. The whole city was blocked off. Kool and The Gang were playing in the park along with a whole bunch of other bands. Lots and lots of ice cold Texas beer in the Texas sun. Nice video pixel of the Miller Texas Party. RIP SRV!!!
@danfordvideo , that's the one! What a day! Thanks for the link to the blogpost as well. I shot video of the first three Who songs from the floor of the Cotton Bowl (somebody else has that) and then made my way up to the roof of press box where we sat and drank cold beer and watched the rest of the concert. RIP SRV, indeed.
@GibsonGuy643 relic'd guitars are for made for profit....the real aging is from the emotion played into these pieces of music history. Long live Stevie Ray !!
@mrkrinkle71 , that's it. I was just wandering through downtown Dallas shooting footage of the event and happened to stop by while SRV & DT were playing.
Amazing, you're lucky to have been there, coolest performance of this song i've seen, Stevie's solo is different than any other version of the song i've heard by him
thank you for sharing this video, but man, i hope you didn't focus too much on the filming because then you would have missed his actual performance, which would be a bad thing!
i know tommy shannon and chris layton are amazing musicians but they just seem like everyday guys it's odd seein them in the same band as such a powerhouse as stevie. at the same time its hard to imagine them not there though
God damn. If you have any more of this show stored away then you definitely need to post it. You know how rare this video is considered now? The clarity of it is phenomenal. More please! 5*!
I feel weird watching this video, because it looks like it was recorded yesterday, the quality is great. Looks like Stevie is playing in some festival that was held, I don't know, like last saturday, but then you realize that this is from 1989 and he's no longer with us.
Thanks so so much! Anything of Stevie, especially in his clean days in this high of sound and video quality is more than appreciated! I hope you can upload more of this show, because as always Stevie is on FIRE!!!!!

Just found some new evidence regarding this.
Backstage at Alpine Valley after Stevie Ray Vaughan's set was over, Eric Clapton told Stevie straight up that he was " the greatest guitar player [he] ever heard". That's a documented statement from Stevie's official biographer.
It doesn't get any more valid than that.
