If you are one of those out there that thinks Eric Carmen is just Dirty Dancing, just give this a look...Just watch him sing, play and perform his heart out...Of course he wrote this. If you have any appreciation for sheer talent, you will be a new fan looking for more saying "How could I not know about this guy???"
Mega, mega group who produced some of the finest music ever - Eric Carmen is a genius. This number combines so many musical genres in one unbelievable performance. Thanks so much for post.
Indeed this was always a favorite of mine...along with Eric's solo number, Sunrise, which also deserved more airplay and recognition than it got because it was "too long" for pop radio.
I couldn't agree MORE, on The Raspberries AND Badfinger being underrated!!! I only hope The Raspberries got to enjoy more of their earned revenue, than the poor, mismanaged souls that were Badfinger!!! what happened to them, was NOTHING short of a crime!!!
well...those of us who are old enough to remember 1971 will remember The Raspberries....this song featured Eric......and he should have gotten the camera time
I remember as a kid in high school saw this on television late at night...and I was amazed ...unbelievable music...I was hooked...still strong and excellent compared to much of todays music
Can't believe that this more than outstanding song didn't get nominations or more popularity. Absolutely bad marketing and that was not Eric's issue. Who was his agent in those days.?
I love the Raspberries and Todd, and while Todd was maybe more diverse, Eric sometimes...kicked Todd's ass at pure POP. This track is so, so precious - I can't believe there is a live version of it, and an amazing one. The Raspberries were ALWAYS about quality, and the quality of ALL the live 70s videos up here is ASTONISHING. And to recreate this piece with Mellotrons...amazing nerve, like trying to recreate a late Beatles piece on stage - not easy.
This is truly a wonderful piece of music, so powerful, and reaches in and touches the hearts of many of us. Seeing it live after all these years was one of the special moments in my life. Raspberries rock!
As a Euorpean I love to see anything with Eric or the Rasperries. We can not listen them here but I think the old songs still can do it for us or any other music fan!
The string sounds are coming from a Mellotron, which is in fact is a keyboard instrument, but still a heck of a lot cheaper than taking a string section on the road!
Saw them perform this live in Atlantic City in 2007, excellent show, but Eric can't hit those high notes anymore (Too many Mallboro's) still they were awesome, band didn't miss a note!
Hope Eric get's his stuff together (D.U.I., rehab) and returns to writing and performing, I don't think they are done yet!
Talk about a group whose life was cut short. I know there was a bubblegum image they had. But they were not deserving that bad rap. This song is simply one of my favorites of all times. Thanks guys!
I wonder if the guy who wrote the "Great American Hero" theme was influenced by this song. The piano riff in the middle section sounds just like the intro to that theme.
According to Eric (in an interview on his website), Todd ripped him off. Supposedly they were recording at the same ("Raspberries" and "Something/Anything"). Eric claims he wrote "I Wanna Be With You" as a sort of revenge because it takes Todd's riff from "Couldn't I Just Tell You".
You're correct - two Mellotrons. But also custom tape banks were produced just for them their tour. The mellotron behind the piano had string / orchestra sounds as well as recorded horns (the second mellotron player across the stage doubled on sax to make a more live horn section sound) and the Raspberries voices to layer some of their live vocals making them sound bigger.
For all those of you accusing Eric Carmen of being the thief here, you need to know that Rundgren actually visited The Raspberries when they were recording this song. He got his out first, but he is the thief, not Carmen. (Rundgren was also present while The Raspberries were recording a song of theirs called - oops - "I Saw The Light".)
Eric Carmen is and was one of the most underrated treasures in the history of american popular music. This guy had it all. Great voice, virtuoso piano chops and great songwriting ability.
So amazing... Saw the Raspberries in 2007 in NYC and it was the greatest show I've ever seen and one of the best nights I've ever spent. Raspberries forever!
The "orchestra" here is supplied by the mighty mellotron played a non-Raspberry. Few U.S. bands lugged a mellotron around with them when they toured. You can see the mellotron behind Dave Smalley at 4:40.
I have had several copes of this video over the years (as well as the rest of show. This is by far the cleanest copy I have seen.A truly epic song and great performance.I was fortunate to see the band in 1973 and again in 1974 plus the reunion tour in 2005.This was a great live band.
I honestly believe Carmen to be one of the true genius' of pop music. Unlike some others who constantly receive praise and are proclaimed, Eric seldom dominates a list of Rock's greatest. But all it takes is a listen to almost any of his songs in the 70s and 80s and it's evident the man is a pure master of his craft!
I too was speechless when first encountering the Raspberries recordings, and later their videos.
I for one of many, am glad you did find their video(s). Like yourself, I became charmed when I first heard their Best of Collection and I thought "who are these guys", and WHY DID THEY NEVER receive the attention they deserved?? I mean I remember the Raspberries, but not for all they did.
Your statement perfectly reflects my sentiments on that Friday evening in 1973 when I turned on the television to "Don K's Rock Concert" (I can't say his name legally here) and was swept away by seeing Eric and the Raspberries perform this masterpiece!
No s**t! I feel bad for him too- the video is excruciating. It simply and rawly illustrates that addictions don't give a s**t about how talented, nice, family loving, forgiving, WORSHIPPED you are. You're gonna do what your addictions tell you to do. He deserves to be limo'd everywhere.
great 'berries tune...yes, there are quite a few borrowings... i also hear a bit from the beach boys "she knows me too well" in there...but heck, it works.
beats the hell out of drawing inspiration from P Diddy-check out fleet foxes, just as ambitious.Did Diddy have classical piano training, or arrangement class? No way. There will always be an audience for this kind of delicious pop-and dare I say wholesome? What an old F I am, but I believe in holding hands and romantic, longing.
You drive to work, listen to this song and you've had 100% of your daily allowance of Who, Kinks, Beatles, Beach Boys, 1910 fruitgum co., and Byrds- keeps ya healthy!
"For the times this is fabulous! You really didn't much (or see much) videos at all in those days. Did Eric really suck in the 80's? No! I saw a lot and heard a lot worse.. I got the Fresh album from the Raspberries and the Myself album of Eric Carmen's. In fact, we used a portion of his 'Sunshine' cut in a wrestling promo on
TV that made it perfect. It got rave reviews from many. And artists still "borrow", even today.
If you weren't a horny adolescent in the early 70s then shut the fuck up, OR if you were and dont remember getting a boner on your 1st slow dance then shut the fuck up. Sure it was sugary power pop but hot 13 year old chicks dug them. better yet just shut the fuck up.
I loved the Raspberries, though this song's main chord progression is an obvious steal from Rundgren's "It Wouldn't Have Made Any Difference." Carmen's somewhere between McCartney and Rundgren. He wrote a lot of tuneful stuff. He also stole from Rachmaninoff ("All by Myself," "Never Gonna Fall in Love Again"). Very good piano player, kind of a pop synthesizer. I like him a lot. Just pointing out some facts.
The chord progression to begin the whole song is straight out of the Todd song. It comes back in at the end. The song isn't the same, but that progression is way too close, esp. since the Rundgren tune is '72 and this is '73. Carmen's stuff is derivative. As much as you want to think Carmen stole it from Rundgren it's not possible. Raspberries was already on the shelf when Rundgren released Something/Anything. You can talk about chord progression all you want but both albums were already recorded and waiting release. Neither artist stole anything.
he may or may not have stolen this from Todd Rungren...but Eric took alot from Rachmaninov when he went solo....like Rechmaninov's second piano concerto...second movement for "all by myslef"....and the first movement was used to open side 2 of his debut solo lp...and Rachmaninov's seoond symphony for "never gonna fall in love again"
Obvious steal? When discussing his songwriting inspirations, the great John Lennon used the term "borrow" instead of steal. He admitted to 'borrowing' from other sources. He also said that McCartney 'borrowed' as well. We all know that Harrison got caught 'borrowing' and had to pay the price for it. Carmen's in great company.
@philipcarol That's got to be the lamest rationale I've ever heard for justifying plagiary. btw, as a composer, Carmen has never been fit to grovel at the feet of a genius like Todd Rundgren. He did, however, come up with a few good things-
You don't understand. The argument is not that Carmen stole from Rundgren (this is naturally a much better song than Todd's liitle piece anyway)... it's about whether he stole from Rachmaninov. Glad to clear that up.

Very nice documentation Philip. I could not agree with you more on how I feel about the group. Good to see many others feel the same way I do about the lack of respect they received. Again, thanks for sharing the video
I have always loved this beautiful song. What a gem indeed Tonyo. Let me also say thank you for sharing it. The Cleveland 4 were extremely under rated in the music industry. We need more like them, let me tell you.
Eric played in the early "teen clubs" here in the Cleveland area back in the late 60's, so have always been happy for his success in the business. His old bands covered the 'The Who" records right on!:-).....Any videos of "Turn The Radio Up"??
What a gem! Was wondering what show this excellent clip came from! Wish I'd been old enough to experience the Raspberries when they hit. I agree, excellent performance!
Incredible how well they did this live. A beautiful song that I play a lot to this day, thanks to CD's. I can still remember buying the album when it first came out!
That was awesome! The Raspberries had to have been one of the best things in the 70's. I also loved a group called The Stories, and the mighty Badfinger!!!
Great footage of one of rock history's most underrated bands of all time. This song is them at their best, even if it is mostly Eric Carmen.
Eric Carmen was the heart of The Raspberries and a very great artist in his own right. One of the most talented guys of his era.
I'd rate Eric right up there with Stevie Wonder and Todd Rundgren as far as being an all-around artist. This was by far the Raspberries best song in my humble opinion.
I think the Raspberries got stuck with the tag "Beatles/Beach Boys Clones." This really was a shortsighted view of the entire scope of their worth in the history of rock and roll. This band had some nice stuff such as "Go All The Way" and "I Wanna Be With You," which were anthems on a par with almost anything else from the late 60s and early 70s.
masterpiece

There's only one song.
It has two distinct parts to it, but only one song.
Again, this shows Carmen's musical sophistication since such a technique is quite common with classical music, but far less so with popular music.

Good Lord!
Could you just melt at the genus of Eric Carmen?

Eric played in the early "teen clubs" here in the Cleveland area back in the late 60's, so have always been happy for his success in the business. His old bands covered the 'The Who" records right on!:-).....Any videos of "Turn The Radio Up"??

Check for the title: Make Me Lose Control. It is on youtube with Eric and a major major mane of hair. Dang! lol.
