@goldiecolfax , the expression originated during her radio show, "My Favorite Husband." It was sponsored by Jello and Lucy performed in the commercials. Her writer Jess Oppenheimer created a nursery rhyme theme for the ads wherein she'd play the different characters in a particular nursery rhyme. In one commercial, she played Little Miss Muffet and the spider, doing that voice as the spider. The audience loved it so much it became part of her act and from then on referred to as "the spider."
@HepburnFlicks , it may be debatable if the one from Life with Lucy counts because it never aired, and it was kind of half-hearted. But there's certainly a case to be made either way.
The spider face was used alot on "I love Lucy". I never remembered her doing it on "Lucy Show" or "Here's Lucy". I always assciated it with Lucy Ricardo, not Lucy Carmichael or Lucy Carter. BTW - when was the last time she did the "spider face"?
@east215 The last time she did the spider face was on Here's Lucy and I think there's a clip of it on here. BTW, if you like The Lucy Show, the Official Second season is coming out July 13, 2010 and is available for pre-order on amazon!
why is called 'spider face'?
