hey I was wondering .. shinymetalbrain.. can I connect this to a camera? because I'm about to buy it only if I can connect a usb camera to it.! thank you kindly please respond.
can anyone tell/show me how to get on line with my 728 jornada I have a Enterasys Roamabout card not sure if /I have the drivers ,it just wont work ,yet ?
This machine was beyond its time...I have one since 2001 and still runs like a though horse, obviously with its limitations of a CE device, but I love It!
I agree that the speakers in the HP stink but it is just amazing what you can do on a HP Jornada 720! I have seen people playing DOOM, Duke Nukem, etc... Run Linux and even watch video (something normal pocket pc's with xp/vista often have trouble doing). I think I'll get one for myself and try doing some of these amazing things! :)
Beyond cool! I'm going to be ordering a 728 model off of eBay very soon. I can't wait to snazz it up. How is the audio without the additional speaker? I would most likely be using headphones the majority of the time. :P
Does anyone know of any shops in or Nottingham England which specialise in old PDAs. I want to buy some chargers for old PDAs but I would like to test the chargers first because I do not know if the PDAs I have still work.
Couldn't help but notice your huge speaker, I read it is an Altec and they are good, but you might like to look through youtube for a set of Nokia MD-4 speakers. It is more portable and is made up of 12 mini speakers, and it gives fantastic sound. I myself bought two sets. I have some info on them in one of my unboxing vids.
Wow...okay, yeah, the Nokia speakers look *super* snazzy! A pity they're a bit on the pricey side, but perhaps they will go down. Sounds like they have decent battery life, too. The Altec I have is large-ish, but light and still portable (I carry it and the Jornada in my army surplus purse-thing quite easily), so I'm rather happy with it, but something smaller would definitely be awesome.
Thanks for letting me know about the Flipstart...I'd never heard of that one. How is its battery life? One thing I like about the Jornada is that it can last for about 9 hours on one charge and so far I've yet to find a "full" windows machine that can do that!
OK, just found a spec on the battery life -- I guess the Flipstart is supposed to last 3 - 6 hours. Not horrid, but not great. And it's also currently $2000, which seems kind of insane for a machine that only comes with 512 mb RAM and isn't upgradeable.
oh no no, the flipstart sells brand new for $699. I just got one on ebay for $550(a month old)and i use an external battery for an additional 4 to 6 hours of power.
dynamism dot com sells the flipstart and the wibrain(another style you might prefer for the same price). or of course you can go to flipstart dot com too.
It sticks on with a piece of Velcro, and there's a cord with a stereo plug attached to the speaker that you bring around and plug into the computer. The computer's "built in" speaker is horrible, but the sound is actually quite good with the external speaker installed.
ok, but i guess Windows CE accepts Classic Programs like the Text to Speech Loquendo, is better than your text to speech, i installed into my Win XP, but, i really need that pocket pc for my job.
If you don't like messing with .dll files or those "hidden" OS directories where they keep all the critical system stuff you might want to think about getting a unit with a more popular OS on it, because there are more applications available for those.
So...to make a long story slightly less long than it could be, I ended up being able to download a few .dll files that people had posted online specifically for others looking to run PocketPC software on HandheldPC. It isn't a "sure thing" that it will work, but it definitely works with some apps, and it worked for mine.
I did some more research online, and discovered that a lot of applications specified as being for "Windows CE" were actually specifically designed for PocketPC (which is not, as I found out, the same as Handheld PC).
The application I'm using in the video, for instance, is called Cepstral SwiftTalker -- a cheap text-to-speech interface that comes in various versions for several different operating systems. I downloaded the WinCE version of Swifttalker and one of the Cepstral voices, and was somewhat surprised to find that I couldn't run the software on the Jornada. It installed okay, but when I tried to run the executable, I got a "missing components" error.
I have heard of some people managing to install Linux on the Jornada 720, only if you do that there's still some weird thing where you need to boot into Windows first and then load Linux from there, because the factory installs the Windows OS in the device's ROM.
All in all, it depends on what you're looking for in a machine. Is size your main criterion? Presence or absence of keyboard? I/O interfaces? Etc.?
One thing you definitely want to think about, though, is what OS features you most value. The Jornada 720 runs (from the factory) Windows 2000 Handheld PC. This is a version of Windows CE, but you have to be careful because not every piece of software advertised as being "for Windows CE" will run on an unmodified Windows 2K Handheld machine.
I've only used the Jornada 720 so I can't comment on the differences between the various Jornada models out there from personal experience. I like the 720's size and keyboard (I have very small hands, though, and people with larger hands might find the keyboard awkward), though.
The audio on this is a little screwy, but it was my first time working with the camera's microphone. I recommend turning the volume down before watching this.
i just got one of theses for free
do u ever have it talk dirty to u ???

The 720/728 speaker is not too bad. It's the 680/690 speaker that really sucks.

I just found your flickr account by accident while trying to figure out how to transfer swifttalker to my Jornada. xD

I think you would be interested in the vulcan flipstart, it is even smaller than the jornada but a full vista machine.
cute video
