This hand trick on leg is a really good idea .. :) I can hardly wait to try it on my girlfriend, for I seem to have problems to accustom her with keeping her body forward.
I was paying attention on how you finish the turn, how much you bend your legs when going into the turn and the position of your upper body(facing forward). Awesome form. Very helpful. I'm a beginner.
Yup, good stuff but to the early intermediate skier I'd say *take care* and practice on a gentle piste, if you nail power carving turns like this you'll find you're absolutely flying within 75-100yds! :o0 Also avoid busy pistes, the number of times I've seen people sweep carve turns up into others in an attempt to loose speed isn't funny. So best completed on virgin/empty slopes IMHO. Also get in the gym before you go - this is a good exercise, from top2bottom it's gonna hurt ;o)
@MarketScoop Good advice certainly, try and stay on quiet runs and if you start to feel like a runaway train it may be too early for you to try and achieve turns like this. It will always help to be fit.thanks for your comments.
@piratededition Well said, I totally agree, my first season too and these techniques have helped me to the point where I am comfortable on blue runs now. Thank you for the great vids.
On my last day of my ski holiday I finally got this long turn legs together turn as I call it. But I did find it was only doable on runs that are not too steep otherwise you do go very fast like this .. for an Beginner turning intermediate, next time I hope to gain confidence skiing like this so I can go faster... !
@OurLucylocket When you are trying to improve your skiing it is best to stay on runs you feel comfortable with get the basics right and you will quickly find you will be skiing better. If you are intimidated you will develop bad habits enjoy your skiing
dont let your slope-sided skipole drag through the snow. It indicates a wrong positioning of your shoulders. The only pole that may drag through the snow is your valley-sided pole.
@hph304 It is a very different thing if the hand is dropping and dragging the pole to what you are seeing in this video, the pole is dragging because of the angles being created as a look at some videos of races skiing specially in giant slalom.
@elatemedia appreciate your answer. However, this is not a giant slalom skiing video but a training video. Some students will notice the dragging pole and copy that. With students this will most of the time result in a wrong shoulder position. Out of my own teaching experiences (mostly in Austria), you should be very careful with these things. It was just a hint from an instructor, the technique in this video is very good.
@elatemedia I agree this is Tignes (France) I got to know at these barriers against the avalanche :D. This route in the distance is probably Signal or Carline
As the slope gets steeper you need your upper body anticipated. In this situation the upper body is not lining up with you hips an knees and ankles.. loosing the stack position you are talking about..
I've been teaching and coaching for many years and somehow never came across this exercise. I tried it and it works wonders (both for myself and my students). Thanks for the great videos and keep up the good work!
@nicolasphamdinh You would'nt have seen this exercise before as its somethng I experimented with whilst freeskiing without poles. I am pleased you like it, Ii is always good when other instructors give positive feedback. Have a good season, Darren
I came here looking for ideas to implement into my teaching. I find the stacked position is hard to teach effectively, as the common consensus is to teach it through short radius turns, in order to progress onto moguls etc. However, this lesson gave me an insight into an alternative method of teaching the stacked position, keep up the good work!
Finally! Someone who has a good technique not making a ´hey look at me I am a good skier with technique no one understand´ video. This is the way to show people how to improve there technique, understandable and a good example.
@voodoowood Skiing stacked is about being in a strong body position which applies to all skiing, including off-piste. Carving is just one component of skiing and we have series workshops introducing bumps, powder, off-piste coming soon that may interest you more.
@hugocampkini There seems to be a lot of confusion about this point. What you are describing would be fine for a short radius turn or a turn using a lot of foot rotation at the beginning. A skier making turns similar to the ones in the film will be in a stronger position letting their torso follow the skis slightly more. It will also allow them to use their ankles and knees more to influence the path of the skis.
Your torso is too slanted, it needs to stay vertical going directly down the slope to get the best technique... Better exercise would be to put your hand on your outside boot as you go round the corner with your other arm directly in front of you, its a more stable position and you can get a better edge on a shorter radius...
@KiterTMK A common misconception is that the higher the level of skier the more technical and complex the exercise has to be. This is not the case. This exercise involves timing and coordination and is regularly used with young races and trainee instructors.
@Pavlee021 This lesson was filmed in Tignes, France on Piste H (the run that starts from the Aeroski and ends in Val Claret). Most of our other ski films are from Serre Chevalier in the Southern Alps of France.
@elatedmedia I wasnt trying to be obnoxious its just that in my book, you have Beginning skills, intermediate and expert/advanced skills. In "advanced" or expert, you are learning skills used in the bumps, steeps and powder sections. If you do not know the intermediate skills shown in this video, then bumps, steeps and powder are going to be very difficult. Hence, it is intermediate. IMHO
@eSKape1994 If we were talking about short turns you're bang on. Search youtube for a video called "Clean Carving" by cleancarve. Bear in mind that these are the best ski racers in the world. Watch the way the arm is following the outside ski. The chest is slightly turning, it doesn't remain facing downhill.
I really like the photo, its a brilliant photo of a ski racer, but that isn't really the point of this video.
I agree that for the long turns, a small rotation will be made
but if you do not rotate your upper body, or even rotate it away (from the imaginary gate), I think you can go much extremer (deeper= more power = faster) than with rotating
but ofc, it depends on what you would like to become and surplus, I'm not a teacher orsm, I'm just a skier ^^
@eSKape1994 You're describing beginner technique to counteract rotation. While it's an ok starting point, too much counter-rotation limits your ability to edge/pivot and puts you in a weak structural position. IE you'll collapse as pressure increases. In more advanced skiing, your body upper body should follow the direction of momentum. Including in short radius. It's smooth, not abrupt.
"Stacking" also refers to fore-aft balance planes and lateral balance planes, not just rotational.
@DavidSkis Following too much through the bottom of the turn is old school. Except for the steepest terrain you should focus on moving ( slightly ) your upper body into the fall line during the turn transition. In slalom turns we should be able to see your whole upper torso if we were looking directly up the fall line to the skier.
@Mooseshagger1 Thanks for posting Mooseshagger1. One man's intermediate is another man's advanced... it's always hard to categorise these things, we would argue that an average holiday skier who maybe skis a week a year, if that, is going to see this as an advanced ski technique. We have some "expert" lessons coming - though they might be merely "advanced" for you!
Good exercise! I like the way the use of both hands are demonstrated. If the outside hand is following the outside ski and the inside hand is placed properly, then over rotation of the torso cannot occur thus twisting or rotaing the skis off their edges. I also like the "flow" aspect you mention, the smooth transition of the hand placement that is. Longer radius turns require smoother flowing movements just as short turns require smooth but quick movements. I will use this drill this winter!

@MRswavgav Hi there, Darren is based in a ski resort called Serre Chevalier in France, although this video is filmed in another french ski resort called Tignes.
I bought the advanced ski app at the beginning of last season and its great. I was just wondering if you were going to follow it up with one based on freestyle skiing, or is that not something your into? Its just I've never attended a ski school which covers that area of skiing. Thanks.
@MrAndrewHay Hi Andrew. Darren isn't much of a freestyler, but he does rip it up off-piste. As a company we're from a mix of ski instruction, big mountain competition and freestyle backgrounds so we're definitely passionate about all aspects of skiing and are looking at all sorts of options for the future.
@oooohla123 Well here's hoping you have a great season for snow there, nothing cooler than skiing pow through snowgums with crimson rosellas flying overhead. OK, well maybe there are a few things cooler (like skiing powder in AK), but you can't do that in N. hemisphere summer!
I would just like to express my gratitude for this video. I was skiing a few backs and discovered I was doing the opposite to what I should of been doing. This video has made me feel confident to try something new to benefit my technique. Thanks. Awesome tutorial. Thanks again.
@enuffskillz Thanks enuffskillz! It's really gratifying to get feedback like that, it makes all the hard work we put in worthwhile. Enjoy what's left of the ski season and keep an eye out for a lot of new and exciting skiing content coming to our channel in the next couple of weeks...
@mdinmi0623 Hi there and thanks for your comment. If you're trying to ski parallel then check out some of our other videos on youtube - for instance the one titled "Intermediate Ski Lesson - Keeping Skis Parallel", or if you've got an iPhone, iPod touch or iPad, check out our "Ski School Intermediate" App on the App store. Enjoy what's left of the ski season!
Hey. I'm 13 and I want to be an extreme skier when I grow up just like Tanner Hall (hopefully you know who he is). But by the time he was 7 he could do a 360 and i only managed to do a 360 by the time I was 12. Do you think I'll ever be as good as him freeskiing?
@Mar1Popp1ns Thanks! Check out our other videos for more on skiing technique, and if you have an iPhone, iPod touch or iPad you might be interested in our "Ski School" apps on the app store. More skiing video content on the way to this ski channel later in the season...
Had a great ski instructor in canada a few years ago said the same as you with the arm position,he used to say like'leaning forward and hugging the bear!' so in the lesson he is shouting 'Hug the bear!' but to his credit he took my skiing to the next level.Exellent video thanks.... cheers james.
@57hartman Whatever works! A few less bears to hug in the Alps, maybe "hug the marmotte" could be a suitable metaphor for Europe (albeit a rather large one). Enjoy your skiing this winter!
@elatemedia best thing is there is enough room to actually ski there in Australia theres almost no room in a good season especially during holidays theres almost zero chance for a beginner to practice on the slope and do turns like this guy is.
@m3rcinaries I don't know, I remember some great carving runs in Hotham back in the day - though granted there's not as much room as in the big euro resorts. Darren's exercise can equally be practiced at slower speeds than this though.
It's pretty magical skiing powder in August between the snowgums with Crimson Rosellas flying overhead - you can't do that in Europe!
@elatemedia true although i'd much rather pine trees. never been to Hotham sounds like theres more room, you see i always go to Perisher and Smiggins but Smiggins when full of snow is by far better than Perisher less people but the runs aren't as wide.
nice job on these clips very well executed and clearly explained, was thinking about doing something similar but you have nailed it, keep em coming. Scott of InsideOutSkiing
@smicha7 Glad you like it Smicha7, there are lots more videos coming over the winter - some will be technique clips (for all levels of skier) and some more general ski stuff, have a great season!!
Thank you very much, you are a great instructor. You just fixed my upper body misalignment!

I bought the advanced ski app at the beginning of last season and its great. I was just wondering if you were going to follow it up with one based on freestyle skiing, or is that not something your into? Its just I've never attended a ski school which covers that area of skiing. Thanks.
MrAndrewHay 10 months ago
@MrAndrewHay Hi Andrew. Darren isn't much of a freestyler, but he does rip it up off-piste. As a company we're from a mix of ski instruction, big mountain competition and freestyle backgrounds so we're definitely passionate about all aspects of skiing and are looking at all sorts of options for the future.

oooohla123 11 months ago
@oooohla123 Lucky so and so, our ski season is ending over here... where do you ski in Oz? Perisher? Thredbo? Hotham, falls or Buller?
elatemedia 11 months ago
@elatemedia That's true... I mostly ski in Perisher.
oooohla123 11 months ago
@oooohla123 Well here's hoping you have a great season for snow there, nothing cooler than skiing pow through snowgums with crimson rosellas flying overhead. OK, well maybe there are a few things cooler (like skiing powder in AK), but you can't do that in N. hemisphere summer!
elatemedia 11 months ago
@elatemedia skiing powder in AK, now that would be amazing! yes, hopefully I can do that in my summer :)
oooohla123 10 months ago
@oooohla123 Well do that and we'll be very envious. Hope you have a great ski in Oz this winter/summer!

I would just like to express my gratitude for this video. I was skiing a few backs and discovered I was doing the opposite to what I should of been doing. This video has made me feel confident to try something new to benefit my technique. Thanks. Awesome tutorial. Thanks again.
enuffskillz 11 months ago
@enuffskillz Thanks enuffskillz! It's really gratifying to get feedback like that, it makes all the hard work we put in worthwhile. Enjoy what's left of the ski season and keep an eye out for a lot of new and exciting skiing content coming to our channel in the next couple of weeks...

And I am still trying to figure out how to transition from wedge turns to parrallel turns. :)

Do you think I'll ever be as good as him freeskiing?
alextlbass 11 months ago
@alextlbass Darren still wants to be an extreme skier but his wife won't let him, and back when he learnt 360s they were still called helis.
As a 21 year old Londoner though you're a little late, but then again, nothing ventured...
As for T-Dog, I'm pretty sure he was skiing rather well even before his first 360 - so piste technique ain't a bad place to start.
elatemedia 11 months ago
@elatemedia Thanks. I appreciate the advice :)

@alextlbass No worries!

Very good video, interesting about the stacked position. I took lessons with teachers for improving my technique, and this video is just the same...

57hartman 1 year ago
@57hartman Whatever works! A few less bears to hug in the Alps, maybe "hug the marmotte" could be a suitable metaphor for Europe (albeit a rather large one). Enjoy your skiing this winter!
elatemedia 1 year ago
Excellent video. Very clear with a good self tuition technique to develop the stacked position. Extremely useful. Thanks and congratulations!

It would be nice to have the location in the video info. Where was this filmed? Thanks.
breathead 1 year ago
@breathead I think we geotagged it, it was filmed in Tignes, France (the neighbouring resort to Val d'Isere) earlier this month.
elatemedia 1 year ago
@elatemedia Thanks! I'll look up info about that resort. If I ever ski there, I'll try to stay "stacked."
breathead 1 year ago
@elatemedia best thing is there is enough room to actually ski there in Australia theres almost no room in a good season especially during holidays theres almost zero chance for a beginner to practice on the slope and do turns like this guy is.
m3rcinaries 1 year ago
@m3rcinaries I don't know, I remember some great carving runs in Hotham back in the day - though granted there's not as much room as in the big euro resorts. Darren's exercise can equally be practiced at slower speeds than this though.
It's pretty magical skiing powder in August between the snowgums with Crimson Rosellas flying overhead - you can't do that in Europe!
elatemedia 1 year ago
@elatemedia true although i'd much rather pine trees. never been to Hotham sounds like theres more room, you see i always go to Perisher and Smiggins but Smiggins when full of snow is by far better than Perisher less people but the runs aren't as wide.
