I watched bandstand before Dick Clark. It was called Bob Horn'a bandstand and it was aired locally in Pa. We could get it on a Philadelphia channel. This was around 1954-55 timeframe. Later Dick Clark took over and then they went national.Would watch it everyday after school and then go play basketball. The 50s were great, rock and roll just started.
This is from the book, "The History of American Bandstand"
Bandstand's first broadcast from L.A. was on February 8, 1964
Dick Clark moved the show there because the music scene was much bigger there. He also said that another reason he did so was because of what happened one winter in Philly when it snowed so hard that folks couldn't get to the studios for awhile. So, they had the cameramen film him and some of the regulars having a snowball fight. Cool!!
can anyone tell me if/ when AB was televised on the west coast?.. i know it was in philly for a long time and i dont remember if they moved to LA or not.
I just watched this and my heart melted. I was 13 when Bandstand came on the air in Southern California where I lived. I wore my hair like Justine, I learned all the dances like the Stroll, the Circle Dance, the Swim, the Bop. I was up against the tv screen so I could watch Bob and Justine dance by. Pat Molitierri was found by her husband in her back yard after she had hung some clothes out to dry. Pat died at the early age of 31. Pat was the bee-bop queen of Bandstand.
Their accents aren't as strong as I remember them being in the '50s and '60's. I always tried to talk like they did -- with no success. Kenny Rossi looks fabulous. Bob looks good, too.
I so wish I was a teenager then. I can so relate to all of that. That music and the dance. It seems gone, but I think it'll live on forever... Such a cool style of life.
I was a little girl watching the regulars after school each day learning to stroll by myself in the living room and imagining I was actually there. I was pretty good for a little girl who had nobody to dance with. Would love to see a reunion or rebroadcase of those early black and white episodes.
I lived in the same neighborhood as Arlene and Justine. I would smoke with Justine after church outside of St. Clement's. I met Arlene in the girls' room at The Elmwood Roller Skating Rink. We would talk about Bandstand and other fun things in the neighborhood.
Yes, I loved to watch them Kenny&Arlene, Bob&Justine...I actually learned to swing dance watching them...I REALLY wanted to go on Bandstand so I could dance with ARLENE...LOL...CRAZY FOR HER!
IMG I am so happy to see this! I am 66 years young, I learned the circle dance and the stroll from Bandstand! Kenny and Arlene, Bob and Justine. And all the regulars who have gone before us especially Pat Molitierri who died so young, Pat I will remember you as one of the most fabulous fabulous rock and roll fabulous person ever!
@janicesoprano I couldn't agree with you more, I would run home from school and run up 3 flights of stairs to watch Bandstand...My favorite was Carole Scaldaferri. My girlfriends and I would study all their dance moves and would practice to Bobby Rydell's song "Wild One" and we would simulate Pat Moliteri, she would literally bounce inches off the floor, amazing...
@janicesoprano Thank you so much for the Bandstand website, as I am sure I will love it..But I also wanted to comment on your ID name, as I am watching Sopranos while I am writing this and Janice was just fighting with Tony again..You must also be Italian, like myself..
@bandstand16 No, I am Irish/Hungarian. When I have registered onto some blogs, Janice was always taken, so I decided to go with Janice Soprano, who is as feisty as I am! LOL As a matter of fact, some guy who posted on youtube PM'd me and thought I was an opera singer. Right! An opera singer, I guess he never watched the Sopranos! Trust me, I would be proud to be part Italian. As a matter of fact, I am about to order Teresa Guidice's Italian cookbook from amazon.
@janicesoprano Ha, ha, you sure fooled me........I love, love, love Teresa!! Fabulous!!!! My daughter ordered it surprising it was only $13.00, did you see her making her homemade gravy (sauce)?
@bandstand16 I just ordered Teresa's' cookbook! I missed the Housewives Jersey show last night, I will watch it tonight. I conked out switching back and forth between New Jersey and sho time with Nurse Jackie and Tara.
@janicesoprano Hi I tried to send you an email at the address you gave me, but when I just arrived home, I saw it did not go thru I will try again. You'll love the cookbook..
I would give anything to see a 2 hr or 10 show all on American Bandstand, I can't beleive with all of the baby boomers that Dick Clark of all people with his genius ideas over the years, has not staged a show of such Greatness. The ratings would be off the Roof. Not a lot of commercials or talking but just seeing the original shows would be such a wonderful site to see..... We'll be waiting....
Many of Bandstand's "Regulars" are gone already. Which network is gonna get smart, help boost ratings, and do a 2-hr. expansion of this little clip? There's a HUGE nostalgia out here for those "simpler" times. Seeing/hearing Kenny & Arlene, Bob & Justine we "re-live" a space of our own lives. It's great.
You are absolutely right! Someone needs to produce a show similar to this clip...Revisiting the Bandstand days will always be a hit for those of us who grew up with it...The dancers on the show were like good friends....Someone PLEASE TAKE NOTE and produce a nice 2-hour expansion of the show similiar to this clip.
Do you or anybody remember Kenny Rossi cutting a few records back in the early 60's? I know he had at least one single called Wait And See and I think he even did a tour because I remember seeing him on tv here in Detroit in our version of Bandstand, Club 1270.
You're absolutely right. I don't have a list at hand, but you can google Brian's Doo Wop Fixxx, and once there, click Search My Site at left, enter Kenny Rossi, and there's one disc that comes up for play: "I Never Thought I'd Miss It (But I Do)." Enjoy.
@grandadjim Hello there, Kenny Rossi released at least six or seven 45's. Bob and Justine also released a 45. I am very fortunate to have them all. Great times!
I remember those times and YES the rest of us DID learn to dance from them. THANK YOU for the dance lessons. You guys were as important as any of the other performers, if not more so.
