  • With all of the ABSOLUTE NONSENSE going on in Washington with this administration, why do we always get worked up over bs like this? I feel lorimneal...and they don't speak for me....BUT black people are always lumped in together as if we are all the exact same.

  • I'm the first to be vigilant about our causes...but this in nonsense.

Blacks are what, only 1% of the poulation in Utah...he was not even talking about us as black people. IF he was even being malicious. I honestly beleive his words were taken out of context...maninly saying that as far as the govt is concerned, they might as well be burned. Sure he may have been wrong in his wording and may have a deep rooted bias...but we have far bigger fish to fry.

  • as a black woman, i call for the firing of the NAACP. I no longer want this overreactive faction speaking for me!

  • You know it is a wonder how things can get so blown out of portion from a simple comment made, especially since 99% of comments made in agreement. At least the man is speaking about reality, that is hardly done by most. The fact that some would try to discredit this commentary and make threats, what does that really say. Bottom line, society loves contraversy, and the more contraversal one is, the more famous. This has just made Mr Bryne's stock go up 5pts, what a great way to hurt the man;)

  • I am a black woman and believe this is unfair. I believe his words and intentions are being taking out of context and the NAACP seriously should sit this one out in order to avoid being invalidated by the public when issues that are more serious requires their attention.

  • This is taken completely out of context. I would argue Dr. Byrne has donated more money to the education of minority students than all the people on this thread combined.

  • this is totally edited! this is only 17 seconds of what he REALLY said. before and after the "17 seconds" he was talking about the generous donations and time he devotes into helping minority children get a high school education and go on the post high school institutions. pat byrne is not a dirty guy; someone took a few seconds of what he was saying (he was trying to make a point; he wasn't saying that their (or our) lives are really worthless). see the entire interview

  • The thing that bothers me is that he's talking about burning someone's kids, that's sick. Why is it that he only addressed minorities, when white people make up 83% of the dropout rate in Utah?

  • because it's minority children who lag far behind their white counterparts and suffer the most in the end without an education. it is a fact.

  • Why do they lag behind in education? Is it because the school system is giving inferior classes to minorities, or perhaps the social environment that they are growing up in? I listen to the music, and see the images on TV that black youth look to as being successful, and am not surprised that there is cause for concern. Where are the positive role models? I try to be that person for my kids so they don't have to look outside for that because it's lacking for whites as well.

  • People seem to be mis-understanding this video clip. This may be the intent of whoever edited it to remove context. What Mr. Byrne is saying, is that the current public school system is harming these kids as severely as if they were burning them.

His criticism is of the public schools, not of minorities, or students in general.

  • You hit the nail on the head by using critical thinking. What was intent of the person who put this clip out here. Given the entire speech, only this part was put out there for people to view. I would say the intent is clear. People hear what they want to hear, and condemn immediately.

  • Ditto amelgepo. I think the main issue is that public education in America isn't super to begin with, much less in Utah. I think we should start thinking in terms of achieving quality education for everyone, instead of this public v private bs.

  • The NAACP and the first poster here have shown both extremes of opinion on this subject. The bottom line is that in today's job market you HAVE to have a diploma and in a large segment of the work force you need to have a degree in order to progress. College is cumulative where knowledge builds on knowledge and without a solid foundation i.e. an H.S. Diploma you're going to face some pretty steep odds of being able to do more than live paycheck to paycheck. So quit dropping the race card.

  • I agree that education is important to ALL regardless of race or ethnicity. And a high school diploma, while necessary, is still not enough. This applies to ALL segments of society, not just minorities and has nothing to do with the so-called "race card". Keep in mind that Byrne dropped the race card, not the NAACP.

  • All I am saying is that if a "minority" says something disparaging about non-minorities there is no problem, but the other way around and the NAACP has a problem all of a sudden. This type of thing should go both ways. Besides, he didn't say anything bad about them, just that without an education they are done. Truth, not racism.

  • thats a terrible analogy, i'm not a hypersensitive race-retard but thats a pretty dumb thing to say

  • Well Stevesisk87, since you have so eagerly shown your level of ignorance, I think we should start by getting rid of you.

  • I'm in! What's the plan for dispensing with Steve-Ignorando?

  • I concur. How do we go about implementing this plan?

  • I suggest that we implement this plan by starting with you.
