  • Long live public broadcasting!

Just thought I'd put that out there.

  • 77 People don't have voices.

  • BEAUTIFUL....

  • Wow this actually is amazing..

  • ouch looks like either everyone had a bad day

or the did not read 1984 and get the joke

  • AWESOME, thank you very much for this. Its nice to see all of the humans still here on youtube commenting about the greatness of this video. If you dislike this or leave a negative comment, you are either a. too young to understand, or b. one of the oppressors in our govt./police force.

  • wow thats... thats just cool just think though a comment is like its own voice so mabey if you think about it most still us there voice just in a different way...

  • I dont get why what the man said after the couple came in should have made people laugh? what did he say and why is it funny? =)

  • @michelaspage Its a reference to the book "1984" by George orwell. Its about hes vission of a possible future, where people are not individuals, and the state has full controll over the population by fear and information controll. Its probebly where the book, and later film, "V for vendeta" got its inspiration. I recomend reading "1984", or listen to it as a audiobook if you find this intreeging.... Im rambeling.

    TL;DR Its a book.

  • i will definetly quote this sometime in my life.....

  • That's cool...

  • ah, the storys this man can tell....

  • omg the ending had me..."the sound of a human voice"

  • Oh, I see...

  • I would rather hear the buzz of a busy crowd, than be suffocated with inhumane silence.

  • KUDOS to you sir, KUDOS.

  • Fantastic is what comes to mind when I watch this.

  • That was one of the best stories <3

  • Thank All Gods. The sound of a heart that still beats.

  • this is top notch animation. i love this!!

  • does the intro song have a name, or was it made just for this?

  • @pyr666 It's called Alina's Place by Fredrik

  • I always fine myself coming back to this video.. aloot

  • Beautiful!

  • @jizzbitch69 Appearently, old people and babies are the only humans who has some sort of happiness left in their lives then?

  • Because of this, I started to read one of his books...

He is really wise. Seriously, pick one of his books up.

  • God Bless this man.

  • I love this... I need hope for the world again...this helps

  • @Adawg4008 Hah! Old people do not suck! They have lived, contributed and built our lives. They deserve respect and admiration for going thru a live and still being able to keep it going. Also: this man is a very important human being and respectable. Lots of books and stuff. And as far as I can see, someone who dedicates his time to uploading mincraft videos shouldnt critizice like that another human being. Cheers.

  • @Adawg4008 what the hell, dude. do u you hate your grandparents too? people over the age of 60 form a significant portion of the important people in my life. i really, really hope you're a troll.

  • @Adawg4008 Oh wow, sure can tell you're a piece of crap if you can't appreciate the words of a wise man.

Actually that's a good idea, how about we implement that policy on your 60th birthday in celebration of this brilliance? Then we can immediately dissolve it and the world will be happy again.

  • The human voice has emotion

  • this is why i love going to black movie theaters

  • Can I Like this a thousand times?

  • Great!

  • The human voice has heart. :-)

  • I love this one as well.. I totally know how he feels that's why I never wear headphones in public places b/c I want to be open to the world, if someone smiles and says hello, or needs help I am able to respond and be social. Very important.

  • reading these comments has seriously made me question my own sanity.

"the wise man speaks because he has something to say, the fool because he has to say something." - Aristotle. now THOSE are words of wisdom.

  • @TheHammar117 So basically you're a fool then? :D

  • i hope i have stories to tell just like mr terkel

  • Touching

  • these videos will make me wake up tommaro, happy, and ready to take on the world

  • @jizzbitch69 Great way to ruin the video >.>

  • haha , great story

  • i'd like to just sit down and just listen to this guy for hours. such a wise man

  • That made me smile

  • If only everyone saw this

  • old people tell awesome stories :D to bad there isn't a senior center by my house, i would totally visit there just to talk to the old folks XD

  • this is the kind of old man i would listing to for hours. :)

  • This is what the fuck I'm talking about. Wise man...

  • crazy ass old people

  • Wise little man

  • I really wish I could tell StoryCorps a story.

  • That was so sweet!! This story is really cute!!

  • AWW.

  • so there's 72 fascists here...

  • ♥like thank god ♥

  • i don't understand this story?? can someone explain it to me

  • @xdwere1 No one was talking on the train, the only sound was the computerized voice. When the couple came in late he was trying to get a reaction out of the passengers to ease the tension but it remained silent, he went over to a baby and got the baby to laugh....so he finally heard a human voice while he was on the train. I guess the point is the people were up tight, not communicating with each other but the baby who hasn't been thought any of this just giggled at him.

  • we can thank schools and police and the goverment for that

  • See... I'm just like this guy. I love hearing people talk, and it breaks my heart when people aren't communicating and laughing. LEARN TO TALK MORE, PEOPLE! You never know when your voice might be the first voice that someone's heard all day.

  • this is absolutely true! you get into the train or bus! it just dead silence, either people have their head phone plugged to there ears or they are busy reading the daily's...all you just hear is the automated voice

  • I can see immediately how he was an inspiration for StoryCorps. Hats off to Studs, and to his piercing humanity.

  • ....me no understand....

  • 72 dislikes?

    How do you dislike this?

  • only the confident or ignorant speak i guess the shy or judgement waiting people shhh up now, because now you cant expext everyone to be friendly, things change the people let it

  • Makes ya think, doesn't it?

  • that was beautiful :')

  • Aw. This was adorable.

  • If only more people like him existed in this silent yet cruel world

  • I ask myself "where's the human voice" everyday

  • This guys voice made me feel warm inside.

  • 72 people have laryngitis.

  • Three years ago, he died at the age of 94.

    I love this man.

  • these are better than this american life

  • When someone on public transit tries to make conversation with a stranger, they get a bad reaction.

    It sucks.

What good is it to have a system that has so much possibility but is being wasted by human ignorance or shyness.

  • @fighterlegend IKR..like the elevator too...original concept of these functional machines was to also provide a friendly environment where you could talk to different people and share...and i for one try, i talk to cab drivers, other passengers on transit trains, other customers in resto-cafe-bars..i always keep it simple and funny..not those politics, commerce, religion..just simple stuff you know??and it can really start up my day like apples and good coffee

  • SHARE MORE OF HIS STORIES!!!

  • A baby is a blank sheet of paper..innocent ,Still holding the core values of a human. They are the only people in this world that deserve a chance.

  • Brilliant

  • i didn't get the message ...i'm stupid. can anyone explain this? thank you.

  • @renzagpasa01 your not stupid. its ok...it just means that less and less people are speaking out and more and more machine voices are being heard..less and less people are jubilant and offer kind words to one another

  • good

  • Simply Beautiful message!! :)

  • What a beatiful way to make us all see that...something has happened to the human voice!!!...

  • There's something about this video that always gets to me, right at the very core.

If anyone should be addressing the nations, it's this wonderful man.

  • This video always makes me cry

  • The baby laughed at the thought of the Human Race, certainly that tells us something.

  • Oh, for Pete's sake. Why did people glare at the young couple? Thirty seconds is not that horrible. I mean I can't even write a comment in thirty seconds. I'm glad that there are people that are willing to strike up conversation like this man. :)

  • @mastermindhunter

I timed myself i wrote this comment in less than 20 seconds lo whast the fuck you sure type really slow

  • @ccaian1 I know I'm a slow typist.

  • this is great I recently visited washington D.C. and I expected the subways to be obnoxiously loud. On the contrary everyone was dead silent with almost no talking it was the wierdest thing, and that is why I never want to live in a big city, if I can avoid it.

  • My God, I live in Atlanta, and I promise if I had been on that train I would have laughed so hard at the Orwell joke. 1984 was an arrow through my heart. I wish so badly I could have been that one person who could have laughed with him.

  • Lol hes a bit of a comical character

  • I could listen to this man talk all day.

  • He just needs to walk into a school

  • Let's hope the baby was laughing with us and not at us.

  • this has become my favorite speech....

  • Awwwwww <3

  • Every time I watch this video, I smile. These shorts that Story Corps does are really something special and I hope that they never cease to create them. Keep preserving the voices of people everywhere.

  • ''George Orwell, your time has come and gone!'' seriously lol, who wouldn't laugh at that xD?

  • @webeee01 I couldn't hear what he was saying, thanks for clarifying :) It wa kinda funny ^^

  • This is so beautiful.

  • When I hear stories from Puerto Ricans that traveled to the United States I always hear how reserved, silent, uncommunicative Americans can be. How its difficult for them to adapt because us Puerto Ricans are very loud, jolly and talkative. This man has proved me that not all Americans can be like that. God bless this man, and everyone else who is like him.

  • @Janisse1023 Jesus Christ I wonder what you guys would think of the Japanese

  • @Janisse1023 If they think we're silent wait 'til they go to Japan!

  • @megabrowser17 What, are the Japanese silent 99.9% of the time?

  • @sonicangel15 Yes, they are extremely pressured to not disrupt in public, that means no talking if possible. Just go on a bus or train in Tokyo and you'll see just how crazy it is. It's like everyone's dead.

  • @megabrowser17 Really? And who pressures the Japanese to not speak in public? Confucius, perhaps? Or the Japanese government?

  • @sonicangel15 It's their own culture, their own society. Social order and peace is a top concern in their minds.

  • @Janisse1023 Lol if you think Puerto Ricans are loud and talkative imagine how hard it is for Cubans!

  • @Janisse1023 :')

  • @Janisse1023 Piece of shit.

  • 1:40 what does he say? I can't understand it.

  • @shinegrove "George Orwell your time has come and gone" haha

  • @breeship thanks!

  • @breeship

Hey, can you please explain the joke? I know George Orwell, though I haven't read any of his work.

    Thanks

  • INCREDIBLE!!!

  • @creamyalmondz INDEED ha

  • 1:44 I laughed hahaha

This is amazing cu it's so true, I'd love to meet this guy :)

  • Nobody should have to pay to communicate

  • Ha ha so true. Nobody talks anymore they just fuckin text and private message. It annoys me because its better to talk then to text because you can't tell if someones being rude or sarcastic. Also on phone plans it costs more to add texting.

  • Ever laughed and cried and the same time?

    I have.

  • Does he remind anyone of the book Tuesdays with Morrie?

  • i love this man :D

  • I would love to have a conversation with this man! haha

  • that was just cute! Loved it all

  • RIP Studs Terkel!

  • Thank god. a human voice.

  • We need more stories StoryCorps!

  • Thank The Baby Everybody!!!!

  • Ok, that was awesome :D "George Orwell, your time has come and gone!" XD

  • 70 people dont have a life!

  • @Gusbus95 Your gay. o_O

  • @Gusbus95 OMG YOU SUCK! CLEARLY YOU DONT KNOW WHAT HIS STORY MEANS. GTFO AND GO FIND YOUR TRUE SELF

  • @Grimjr75

just because someone doesn't like the video doesn't mean you have to reply like that. just ignore it.

  • @McScruffells fine then >.>

  • This man is my hero!

  • that was such a sad and adorable story. Sad because of what we are becoming, and adorable because of his narrative voice and optimism!

  • Don't blame all of us. Blame the ass holes who bully you on the verge of suicide and get away with it so teenagers like me are forced to dress like the cool kids, not do "nerdy" shit, hang out with the popular kids. It's easy to judge when you aren't in our shoes and not realize how difficult it is to be accepted or fit in. And fuck all that be yourself bull shit because all that got me was some punk asses dissing me every day for who I was. I'm fine hiding the computer nerd inside me.

  • @J9429 you don't have to hide eventually. I know it's easier during early school years. When you go to college be yourself, seriously. And if someone has a problem with it, ya tell 'em to GO DUCK YOURSELF!!! Because as an "adult" (lame) you can. I have, and i've never had more respect as my genuine self than ever.

Don't be so cynical. Don't let the weird within you die.

There may be more sheep than wolves, but as a wolf you learn to eat the sheep so to speak. =)

  • Wow i'm mos def gonna subscribe. I love these vids.

  • Dammit...that ending got to me...why am I crying?!? T_T

  • lmaoooo. George Orwell reference!!:D 1984 is an amazing book.

  • You know i´m only 16 and it might sound dumb but i really would more love being me in like the 80´s or something before that only because all you get out of life today is this whispering and endless talking behind someones back and I myself know when someone doesn´t like me they try not to make it obvious but it is and that Ipod thing from 1wowme1 is completely true jus put that in your ear and eaither your problems go away or your just a jerk and do it to ignore people. Life was Wonderful Once.

  • Sorry, I feel stupid for asking this, but what was the George orwell joke? :P I didn't get it, but I bet it wouldve been funny if I knew what it was

  • @Onewa80 well he wrote the book 1984 is all I know

  • @Onewa80 i believe it was a small reference to George Orwell's book "1984" about a totalitarianistic government and no one had any real sense of expression, just fearful silence with a very mechanical voice here and there.

    or atleast something like that.

  • where can i find more stuff like this, but out side of storycorp

  • George orwell is screaming in heaven about how right he was lol

  • people in gereral have been known to be greedy, stubborn, apprehensive, but are they really? or are they just deaf? the world speaks to them and they dont respond. i listen. people USED to listen. I try to get people TO listen. but this is an independant ordeal. which is why i dont exactly like people. because the world guides them to try and get to where the self aware people are. but they cant hear it. so im sorry for those who cant hear it.

  • this is true poetry

  • I'm glad youtube recommended this to me; this, to me, is beautiful in every sense of the word.

  • I think that just the fact that people, even those of the younger generation, are discussing the "human voice" is a sign that it is not, nor ever will be, lost.

  • lol. all these videos are great, but for some reason this one is my favorite. and i agree with 1wowme. it bugs me when kids walk down the hall with earbuds in their ears. theyre missing out on all the stupid/funny conversations kids my age talk about. it can really lighten up my day.

  • thats why i shout when i talk, when i watch movies i talk too, i don't like walking with people and not talking and i have a big mouth, i hate people who judge you, i dicpise them..

  • @sladunkaAa Talk at the movies at your own house I'm gonna give you a dirty look if I hear you in the theatere after paying 12$ for a ticket >/

  • That was very beautufifkfkfk

  • all of these interviews are beautiful- simply because they incorporate the real voice and story of real people, not big time actors or anything. That's why they are all so interesting- and they are all so poetic-it's life- laughter and tears, hugs and heartbreak.

  • that was beautiful

  • they could make a whole movie for each of these interviews :)

  • @Hazelnutfilling Exactly what I was thinking! :)

  • 1:44

    Don't worry, I laughed.

  • @shinphatman Me too! :D

  • Hey i know our generation is losing its touch. Im almost 14 now, I havent lost my human voice because my parents and I have traveled, i always experienced amazing things and they were always there for me. Now people talk on their cellphones. In restaurants, kids don't talk with there parents they have electronics everyones quiet the dont talk or anything. Its sad

  • Studs is a wonderful guy. Always has something wise to say and has a real feeling for people. His books of interviews with people are wonderful.

I love these storycorp videos -- what a great use of video and youtube.

  • These are adorable.
