  • I was at this show, Dodger Stadium in 1978.

  • Holy crap! I just relived the only show I ever saw ELO perform live. These guys rocked their balls off! Thank you to ELO; no one puts on concerts like this anymore. And Kelly holds his own; I miss you and wish you peace.

  • Bets video I have seen of ELO doing this GREAT song, don't watcxh the rest, watch teh Best

  • ecoutez plutot chuck

  • You tube Three Things About Islam.

Take care of your freedom !

  • the definitive 'Roll Over Beethoven' wow.

  • Another one of my favorite groups right up there with The Doors.

  • Everyone Loves the Orchestra

  • I saw this tour. 07/07/78, Birmingham, AL. I think Jeff did all the vocals then. And there was more physical energy on the stage. They were everywhere at once. I would like to know the date of this performance.

  • WOW-This Music Is Alot Better Than What I Do:)

  • Awesome.

What is the furthest any of you have travelled to see a band ?

  • From AC/DC 2 LED ZEPPELIN & A LOT IN THE MIDDLE.

  • As I understand it, the acoustics in the huge spaceship shaped stage made it difficult for the band to hear themselves properly. Due to the complications of trying to reproduce their music in a live setting and the heat from the stage and the lights causing the instruments to go out of tune, backing tapes were used that only the band were supposed to hear.

  • The tapes were also for the audience. The engineer brought the tapes "up" whenever the strings started going badly out of tune, and they were used for the complex backing vocals of the newer songs. I was at the Silverdome the first of two nights ELO played there and was VERY aware that tapes were used. In fact, I was sitting behind and above the mixing desk. Whenever I noticed the taped sound, I could actually see the tape running next to the console. They weren't trying to hide it obviously.

  • awesome

  • i was there in 77, it was the corniest part of the show

  • doesn't anyone remember that ELO got a shitload of bad press for playing with pre-recorded strings?

it was a big no-no in the 70's.

people sued to get their tickets refunded.

nowadays talentless shitbags will lipsync any chance they get.

  • interesting! will look into it

  • please explain this pre-recorded strings...interesting

  • the string arrangements were on tape... the violins cello, etc.

back when rock had a shred of integrity, this was unacceptable.

now it's expected that shitty pop bands will pantomime behind the slick studio trickery they've put their name on.

  • Yup, a lot like Kiss doing "Beth" with pre recorded instruments on stage

  • no not at all - kiss didn't pretend to be playing that backing track - everyone left the stage and it was understood that 'hey the drummer is gonna come out and sing his crappy ballad along to the backing track while ace frehley does some more coke and the jews count their money.'

ELO was actually trying to pull one over on their audience and they got caught.

again, this is nothing by today's standards but it was news back then.

  • One concert promoter in Detroit sued ELO is what I recall.

Pre-recorded orchestra was played but all else was live. Watch the latest DVD of the concert where Jeff replaced CBS Records horrific overdubbing of the original concert with album versions of certain hits and remastered the tape to play the live versions actually played at the concerts.

  • that sounds about right.

  • My brother live on the cello!

  • hugh mcdowell or mike edwards or colin walker??? - loved all of elo whichever they were!

  • this is a good version but what happened to the part 2 version live i think it was the best

  • Part 2? Oh, please...

  • @mkp823: rustyspoke is absolutely right! The 1973 "Midnight Special" live version is absolutely kick ass! If you haven't seen it, SEE IT!

  • What has the 1973 M.S. version got to do with (the so-called) ELO Part 2? 1973 was the first "Jeff- ELO" and was the best of all of 'em!

    ELO Pt. 2 was a cover-band.

  • @mkp823: Oh I thought you were talking about "ELO 2" the album that it appears on. Oh I'm very aware how much ELO PART 2 sucked! That was horrible! Oh and it's not the M.S. version I'm talking about, it's the '73 Don Kirshner's Rock Concert footage that I meant to say instead.

  • wow! never seen a live concert like that! thats awesome!!

  • ROLL OVER BEETHOVEN CAUSE KELLY GROUCUTT SANG THOSE RYTHYM AND BLUES. RIP Kelly

  • F--k! ELO burns down the donkey's ass on this one!

  • The DVD of the show is available. I bought my copy last year, and I'm glad I did!

  • I LOVE their outfits!!

  • Too bad another vid of them performing this song (in '73) isn't available here on YouTube anymore. I loved that vid...the strings were more audible.

  • Yea I upped it but the ELO nAZIs removed it Go to Google video I reposted it there !

  • Thanks!!

  • posted it where . . .send me the link plz??!! thanks

  • It's back!

  • I've uploaded it. You can find it in my profile.

  • Thaaaaanks for posting! You're my hero, i have miss this so much! It's the best live-version ever! And sooo long! :-)

  • Why isn't Jeff singing all of the vocals?

  • Kelly Groucutt, the bassist, sang solo parts on numerous songs, as well as backing vocals.

  • Not to mention that during their earliest performances of this, Mike D'Albuquerque (their bass player before Groucutt) did backing parts.

  • @JohnnyCat77 classic example of Kelly singing with Jeff is Sweet is the Night off the OOTB album

  • @JohnnyCat77 because it helps save on Jeffs vocals, a long tour is grueling on the singers especially, that was one of the big plus's of bringing Kelly K. into elo, he was able to do lead and backing vocals and play bass to boot..Kelly I believe was one of the best singing bass players ever

  • @JohnnyCat77 you'r right
