they claim to have Neil young influences - i can hear it - BUT I HATE NEIL YOUNG. I luv these guys. I could write novels on what i feel about this music - deep lyrics - bravo
You boys are good! Get the hell out of the cesspool called Portland. You belong in Austin or Nashville. Unless you like hanging out in Portland. Then you lose!
Grace is a bruja/necromancer who resurrects the protagonist from the grave ("she found me down in a lonely place"), using a jaw bone that possesses dark magic which is later alluded to in the line "in a roadhouse run by a godless bone." She recreates his body using his flower of a tongue as its life force ("she dressed me up for to take me home") but having seen the ultimate Truth that only the dead can know, and mortals cannot live whilst knowing, his "words" kill.
The line "She fed me words that I could not taste, for I had no tongue it had been replaced" refers to the incantations that she uses in the creation of his body. Having been dead his mortal memories are scant if at all, he has to relearn everything; "the neighbor girl taught me how to spell, and how to steal what I could not sell." In the end, he cannot escape the dark magic used for his resurrection; "but I fed my tongue on the devil's rum (violence)" and kills the necromancer.
@TheEternalBeginner The sheriffs ("four men sittin' with an old shotgun, silver stars pinned on every one") are killed when they hear the ultimate truth that no mortals can know. As the weight of the deaths accumulate on him, the dark magic festers and he is worn by the weariness of his abominable half-life. Because he himself is not alive, and the flower is the life force which drives him, his body is not buried but "planted [..] by the sea."
Why does every one of their so called story songs have to be so violent, i love their songs but the lyrics for this and black river killer are a little much.

My current interpretation:
Grace is a bruja/necromancer who resurrects the protagonist from the grave ("she found me down in a lonely place"), using a jaw bone that possesses dark magic which is later alluded to in the line "in a roadhouse run by a godless bone." She recreates his body using his flower of a tongue as its life force ("she dressed me up for to take me home") but having seen the ultimate Truth that only the dead can know, and mortals cannot live whilst knowing, his "words" kill.

Reminds a bit of "Black River Killer", which was my favorite song from their album "Furr", so really I like this song.

@Jinnerz Yeah can just totally lose yourself listening to a story song. The Decemberists are good for those too.
