55g is pushing it for an adult Oscar, but since he's the only fellow in there, it probably will do just fine. These guys recommend a minimum of 75g. But nonetheless he's a very beautiful Oscar.
I didn't realize it needed to cycle and although he suffered a little, he was much better off than he was before I found him. I had a 55 gallon tank that I cleaned up and finally put him in. He was probably 5" long when we took him in and is at least 12" maybe 13" now.
He belonged to my next door neighbor who's house got trashed during Hurricane Katrina. He had a brother the same age and a placastamas in a four gallon tank. His brother was already belly up and he was fighting for his life when I found him three days after the storm. No electricity and no food. I took him and his little buddy and put them in a 10 gallon tank in my garage on a generator for about a month. Every time the water got bad, I'd just change the whole tank.
