This person has a good set of ears and more than likely has perfect hearing.He has a pedel at each of the drums bottom to change the pitches of each.That's my tinking of how it's done.I've not been around music for more than thirty years.I just saw a lady playing a set of seven drums in a full conceto for timpani fifteen mins ago and I saw her using her pedals a lot for changing the pitches when she had to play a lot of notes in that concerto.Thanks,loving "YOUTUBE" more each day I use,

I'm not saying that timpani are the same as organs, simply that timpani have a nice dark, powerful tonality that suits this piece better than, say, a flute.
Wow, that's amazing. I especially like the parts where the timpani plays the fugue and then the bass lines. I bet that took a good long while to work out!
