What's strikes me about this isolated track is that is sounds like Ed did the whole thing one take. In other tracks can here a definite punch in on the solos. Nothing but a volume knob.
These guitar tracks show what a brilliant rhythmic guitarist Ed is. Always bugged me how he was often dismissed as the guy who just soloed. Lots of guys can bang out a million notes but few hard rock guys who can play rhythm like Ed.
@144wychwood i have a guitar world article on Eddie titled EDWARD VAN HALEN THE RHYTHM KING. it had tabs for panama, mean street, and unchained. Hes so AMAZING
@MrSchusnap -Exactly. I've always thought Ed should have been as renowned for his rhythm palying as he was for his leads. The dude was a rhythm beast on those tracks you mention. Mean Streets in particular is just unbelievably tight.
@ApeLikeCreature I think they said Eddie actually used a flying V for this track. I think he switched to the front pickup for the quieter passages! Kinda' like a Les Paul, flipping the switch on the top of the guitar. Anyways, great song!!
@vitor68, Not sure which guitar Ed used for Panama but I'm almost positive it was not the "V" Ed used Flying V on "Hot for Teacher", "Girl Gone Bad" and "Drop Dead Legs".
When I started playing in the 70s - back before mom&dad bought everything you wanted, the best stuff you got was worn out second hand crap that fell off a garbage truck and you had to learn it all by ear - the volume control was a must learn. If you didn't use that you basically sucked as your sound was shitty. There was no need for two channel amps for clean and dirty sounds. I had a 78 Marshall 50w and a Strat w/Dimarzio X2N pup. The volume knob was the key.
For years, I've been looking for someone to teach me that patent EVH flurry of notes in the guitar solo between 2:08 to 2:11, but NO ONE has EVER nailed it precisely. I've never seen it accurately transcribed or played live by anyone other than EVH. There's just something elusive about it, and some people get close, but no one ever nails it as Eddie does.
@sholstein That's because you dont have a Plexi Marshall and a 10 band EQ boosting the preamp with a frown curve eq setting and a variac dropping the power setting of the amp to 95 volts...
whoever played this is a real student, but fail on the dupe attempt

Eddie has a cast on his right arm {1:14} ..he injured it on the Diver Down tour 1982

@Trace7173 And he still played guitar? AWESOME!!!

Notice how he just uses his volume knob to get a cleaner sound in places. No studio trickery or overdubs. Pure Brown sound!
