  • Freakin AWESOME!!!!!

  • Will the 1 dislike please kindly fuck off!!

  • Wow...the bridge section on this version now makes the album version sound incomplete.

  • why dous peter never play one of his gibson les paul,s anymore?????

  • @norwayfinland because les pauls are very heavy, and he got tired of the weight of it

  • 0:38 roger pretending he is cool enough to play guitar.

  • Anyone get the feeling Pete is trying to channel Roger with the way he's singing?

  • priceless!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • Absolutely fantastic Who video. Thank you for uploading...

Who is the one idiot who did not like it?

  • Well, I think that while Pete sings it with more meaning, his voice sounds a little wimpy for the verses and Roger still sounds best. I really like the piano parts in the bridge though. It really adds a lot to the song -- Why didn't they keep that? I guess they felt the song was already long enough without it.

  • Sounds great

    I love it

    pete is a genius

  • The Who = greatest Rockband ever

Townshend = the guitarist that makes the best show on stage ever

  • lilmunan

the chorus and beat and stuff were written for lifehouse but the lyrics are about the morning after he was yelling who the fuck are you at the sex pistols

  • pete man

  • first class my firend you cant do better.

  • Pete's demo's sound like a one man band. Great stuff.

  • freakin amazing in 76!!

  • what time Pete Townshend write this song?

    is in 1970? for lifehouse?

all songs he sing by himself? not roger?

  • Great job. Some things.. would be nice (if possible) to show a bit more of Bundrick, Kenney Jones, and Simon Townshend if he was there. Also that great clip in the studio with Moon, I LOVE the part where Roger sings, and when the "who are you are you are you" clip comes in, the surprise on his face when it WORKED! LOL. I've so loved Keith. Poor Kenney didn't realize all the sadness re; Moon would need an outlet, apparently became HIM. He's said, "there'll never be a right drummer but Keith."

  • this is what you call making it easy for the rest of the band, all of petes demos are the same

  • You did an AWESOME job putting together this video. An f***ing A+ that's what I say. I've never heard this version, it's f***ing AWESOME too! Pete's singing actually gave me goosebumps three different times during it.

My highest compliments to you. You chose gorgeous footage of "the man" as well.

  • Cool version of a great song...................

  • Pete Townshend...the Mozart of our times!!!!

  • sick, pete singing like a punk

  • How rare can it be? I have it. Its on a lot of cds with different names. the cd I got it on is called Music Must Change. There is a really cool version of Sister Disco on it.

I think Guitar And Pen is the highlight track on it.

  • You can find this on Pete Townshend's Lifehouse Chronicles box set along with a ton of other demos for the Lifehouse project. It's incredible.

  • does pete drum on this version too?

  • gr8 video =]

    this version is gr8

  • whole demo is here:

    watch?v=UwofSRCZd3I

  • Thank you for posting this! Pete's keyboard work on this is nice too! Was this released as a B-side?

  • Comment removed

  • I've heard this, its not that rare but thanks so much for posting

  • I'd always heard that this (Townshend) song was meant to be more spiritual than the finished version(s). Never was sure until now...Daltrey does knock it up into something completely different. Thanks for posting.

  • pete is the who!

  • awesome!

    great video and great version!

  • this version is a treasure!!!

  • great job

were you get this at its awesome

  • It is always astounding how complete Pete's demos were. This is the whole song!

  • hmm? why was the last part removed? i have a version of this with the last verse in it

  • this is just a demo, not the real thing. that's the whole purpose of demos

  • am i crazy or does pete start the song out sounding more like johnny rotton?

  • Pete 'needs' The Who, just like

    The Who 'needs' Pete.

  • i like this better with petes voice

  • Brilliant, ive heard 4 discs of pete's demos from tommy, quadrophenia, lifehouse and who's next its called scoop its a bootleg thing

  • awesome work... I love this compilation.. well crafted indeed!!!!

  • Great job! A lot of video I haven't seen before and you did a good job of matching up the video with the audio.

While I sometimes prefer PT's demo version to the Who's version, this is one song where I like the Who's version better.

Still- Damn good job! I really enjoyed watching it!

  • doesnt sound like pete singing at all

  • and how do i find this "lost version" of who are you?

  • if this is the real demo then Keith made this song GOLD.

  • In fact it's opposite...t Keith did very little, basically copied Townshend and added little, that's all...

  • Pete doesnt really do any fills or anything. some of its the same but Keith made BIG improvments to this song in my opinion.

  • not to me but all subjective, his adds very little to me..

  • GREAT vid dude! Keep em coming!

  • Boy Roger sounds aloy like Pete...

  • I wonder why...

  • Gulp! I had forgotten how good looking Pete was when he was young! Love the footage with the blue tele

  • ha ,really!! i think in the early 80s he looked like frankie howard, with that haircut!

  • My favorite demo of his has to be The Relay. Its hard to find but its worth checking out

  • Are you sure this is from 1976? I was pretty sure it wasn't written until 1977. Of course, I could be wrong.

I'm glad the band decided to cut the middle bit. It meandered a bit too much there, for my liking.

Another interesting track is the 'lost verse' version of "Who are You"

  • yeh i have the lost verse on my ipod i personally think its better than the orignal cut.

  • no who are you was written is 1975

  • This is not that rare.the cd I have is Music Must Change. Sister Disco,Guitat and Pen,and No Road Romance which is my favorite are all on it. Great cd.

  • Did Pete put down all the tracks on this demo, I mean did he play every instrument. Does someone know ?

  • Yes he did and did so on just about all of his demos (guitars, bass, keyboards, drums).

  • Just hypnotic. This is the video from The Kids Are Alright but with this interesting and very stimulating track over the top. I could listen to that for hours. Like the way it goes 'angry' right at the end with the picture of the drum coming up. Going to listen again!

The Earth's magnetic field makes a strange alternating sound like a bell and the stars make weird noisedwhen converted into sound. Wonder if Pete knows this?

  • Anyone know what kind of synth that is, if it has a name?

  • it is pete playing guitar through the filters of his ARP 2600 synthesizers

  • Much better than Roger..

  • i hate how pete sings in this version

  • no

he sings several bits too nasily

  • I couldn't disagree more. He sings it perfectly. The only person that could have done it better is Roger Daltrey himself.

  • cough, cough, DEMO, cough cough

  • Pete wrote 'Who are you' already in 1976? Amazing, I always thought he wrote it in 1977. That part about the policeman finding Pete lying stonedrunk in the street really did happen. By the way, great demo! Spooky atmosphere.

  • He wrote it in 1970 or 1971. It was part of The Lifehouse project.

  • ermm, just because it was part of lifehouse it doesnt mean he wrote it that early. He never stopped writing songs for that thing.

  • He wrote it in 1977 after the night he got drunk in Speakeasy and met Cook and Jones of the Sex Pistols. The parts about the policeman and preaching from his chair actually happened.

It's all described in Before I Get Old - The Story Of The Who. :P

  • That's right. It's quite well known this was the inspiration for it. Meeting those 'creatures'.

Loathe the way Pete sings 'poleethman' (((yuck))) but love the hypnotic synth.

  • not daltry singing. its a compialation of clips

  • amazing the film from 1978 in the studio has amazing quality Nothing on youtube close to that.

  • Not Daltry

  • made many a neighbor "mad" with this song..lmao

  • Its cool like watching a trainwreck. The value in it is to look at Keith there vs. ten years earlier to see what booze and drugs can do to you.

  • Keith wrecked by booze and drugs is still better than what most of us can ever hope to be.

  • Where do you hear Moon in this track.. ?

  • Fantastic Clip bro, Thanks for sharing this track,

    Rock on

  • Great video and awesome footage. Nice quality too. Long live Rock. Long live The Who.

  • peet's demos are - as the whole bloody world knows, brilliant. thanks for this posting!

  • thanks for uploading...

    ...just amazing!!!

  • Pretty good. My favorite version of this song however, is on the Amazing Journey doc released last year. It shows them at shepperton studios in '78 doing a practice of it. It wasn't completed yet but the small bit they show is damn good. I would highly recommend looking at it

  • yeah. i got that one. their supposed to release that entire gig later this year (it was actually Kilburn 1977, not shepperton 1978). i have the entire concert as a bootleg. its actually pretty good. i'll post more from it if you'd like

  • Oh, my mistake. they were wearing similiar outfites from that show. That would be great if you could. Thanks a lot

  • if you have any request's there is the version of "Baba O'Riley"

from that show on my profile and in the description it has the setlist of the show. let me know if you want any particular songs.

  • Post My Wife if you have it. Thanks

  • i am sorry to say that i dont have that edit of "My wife" any more (from kilburn i assume is what you mean?), although i may be able to get it and im sorry it has taken this long for me to reply to you about this. ive searched through my tapes and i can only recover a bootleg version if your still interested (note that the quality is notably better than the version of BabaO'Riley i have posted up)

  • actually, ill go ahead and post it right now for ya cause youve been so patient

  • This is infinately better than the craptastic Kilburn show.. That was one incredible terrible show, so sad considering how good they have been year earlier...

  • Craptastic show? It was pretty dam good for being off the stage and not rehearsing for a year. That shows how great The Who are if they come unprepared and sound like that

  • There's nothing good about that show, to me anyways...

  • i think its actually a good show. its gonna be even better when they clean it up and publicly release it. plus i think part of the reason who fans like it so much is cause its rare, and its a big show in their career.

  • well everyones entitled to their opinion i suppose. whatever. i know it wasn't their best gig, but i personally think its pretty cool. thats just my opinion

  • Did you get this off of Lifehouse?

  • no. this is off an old bootleg i have that just happened to have this on it. i bought it thinking it was a live performance, but this was an unlisted track so i was pleasantly surprised

  • Hmm. Well this is almost definitely from Lifehouse, I have the 6-CD set and this is one of the Who Are You versions on there.

  • oh? i didn't realize it was on it. i only thought they had the gateway version on it. how is that set? worth the price i mean?

  • Yeah I think there are 4 versions of Who Are You on it. It really depends on what you're looking for if it's worth the price. There are 3 CDs of regular Townshend music, mostly demos or reworked version of Who songs. There are a few originals on there, but not as many as I had hoped. Then there's a CD of classical music performed by the London Chamber Orchestra, which I guess Townshend wrote (there's a 9 minute Baba O Riley performance) and the other 2 CDs are the Lifehouse play itself.

  • Prett damn cool!

  • fantastic stuff

  • Badass!!!

  • gracias por ese regalo ,excelente!!!

  • Thanks!

NICE. I hadn't heard this one before. Can you post his rap version as well? :-)

  • yeah. is that the one thats called like "gateway Remix" or whatever where its basically the same thing but theres a rap in the middle? yeah can post that

  • awesome.

is there a my generation demo at all?

  • Yes, there is a My Generation demo. Really hard to find, though. I think it was released as a vinyl single with the book Maximum R&B way back in the early eighties. It's a slow talking blues kind of arrangement. The Who supercharged it. Big time.

  • no shit its the demo and like most who demos, pete is on vocals, he's the songwriter

  • That is not Roger Daltrey singing.
