While there was some validity to the Domino Therory, and Stalin and Mao definately had plans for a socialist Asia... 2 of the neighboring countries. Laos and Cambodia fell to the communists not because of the Vietnamese, but due to direct US policy towards those governments.

Vietnam later helped the Cambodians by ousting the Khmere Rouge from power, and assisted the UN in restoring constitutional monarchy.

Having said this, I still believe that if we had gone all-out with this war, like we should have with Iraq, we could have won both conflicts rather easily. The problem in each case was a lack of commitment, troops, & clear-thinking strategy.
