For someone more interested in shooting stills outdoors than in what kind of video they can get out of it, I think this is a better option than the Cannon. The larger sensor is the clincher in my book, so it can shoot stills at higher ISO with less noise.
The T3i wins for the video due to the possibility of manual aperture and shutter speed, which the Nikon doesn't, but the Nikon has better and sharper image quality due to the larger sensor. The D5100 also has more dynamic range. Canon tries to stuff 18MP into a smaller sensor, which relates to the slightly lesser image quality. The may not sway the average person, but I chose the Nikon in the end due to my needs for the edge on image quality at the price point.
Thanks! That's exactly what I needed to hear, I am looking to upgrade from a good quality digi point n shoot and have been looking for straightforward advice such as that given in this video.
Good job Mobilepsycho. Good basic review, I upgraded to the D5100 after getting a D3100 for about 4 months. Now I have upgraded to the D7000, but miss the lightweight of the D5100 and the built-in HDR mode. I also miss the flip screen when attaching it to my telescope.
Very informative..but i jus wanted to correct one thing...u said it shoots film in 30fps as appossed to 24p...for a more professional look...you want 24p...30p(even tho much much clearer on this camera im sure)is the same equivilant as a small hd camera, cell phone, sony handycam, etc.this was sumthing i didnt know when i first got into filming.and felt i should share in case anyone with an ambition as a videographer was lokking.cuz i was as im pricing a new camera.again very informative.take care.
Any idea why mine shoots really slow in the continuous mode? I've got a vid up
