okay...you fucking sink our ship and kill thousands of people...and then you decide to be nice and rescue us?? HOW ABOUT NOT FUCKING SINKING THE SHIP IN THE FIRST PLACE!?!?!? thats what i would say if i was on that u-boat as a survivor
@Nackenzwei I have no idea what you said but *takes award* I would like to thank the academy, umm my hero kurt cobain, and uhh jesus, THANK YOU SOO MUCH :D
If someone is guilty for this accident, then its the allies!

The Laconia was an armed merchant cruiser, since 1939.
After she was sunk, the german commander radioed his position to the allies, asking for help with the rescue. Also, 3 more uboats were ordered to assist.
Then, the americans started bombing the uboats. They damaged one and sunk several towed rescue boats, forcing the commander to cut the ropes and to dive.
On that day, Dönitz gave order to not participate in any rescue, anymore.
It's very sad reading harsh comments made by people that don't even know history, only suppose... I'm referring in special way to mspratz. The sinking of Laconia was a real international tragedy, because involved, Italians, polish, british, germans, americans and french. Was a turning point in the war because were issued orders that made war even more inhuman, Italian pow's in this "marginal event" paid the highest cost, over 1400 of 1600 dead. No one was courtmartialled for this crime.
another not so well known sinking was the sinking of the RMS RANGATNE,sailing home from auckland, and sunk by three german raiders in the pacific.19 lives were lost and passengers put ashore ,whilst service personnel went to a prisoner of war camp in germany.
It's hard to judge now, many years after WW2... I read about this incident as part of my study, and it appears that the American's B-24 attacked 4 subs (even they were flagged with red cross) because they were feared of further attacks in that area, and possibility to reveal their secret airfield based in Ascension. Also, you cannot blame the pilot, he folowed orders by his commanders... And i read some comments - 'that Germans deserved their fate - cos they showed no mercy in War'...
...it's also stupid conclusion... Not all German soliders were 'animals'. Many of them proved to be honored and human. Respecting the opponent, and helping their enemies if they needed help, like in this case. Many other German U-Boat commanders continued to help ship crews even it was forrbidden after this incident. Altough there was also crimes from Allies that were never been charged. Like in example of sinking of U-187 when the crew of HMS Beverley fired at crew in water of sunked U-boat...
Mega carlo You spout some serious shit!!!! Cut their hands off???!!! i dont think so.... if they were tying to board an already overloaded life boat (ie full of women and children ) they like all cowardly scumbags will try anything !!!!soon as the shit hits the fan lest we forget!!! the african campaign!!! turncoat bottlers!!!!
From what I know floating bodies of Italian prisoners with the hands cut off were found by an Italian sub arrived to the incident area. Apparently the British cut off the hands of the Italian survivors trying to get on the life boats.
A lot of surprise for the behaviour of the German commander? In the Atlantic Italian submarine crews used to rescue survivors after attacking since 1940. It happened in several occasions. I doubt I'll ever see a film about that...
A mere drop in the bucket as to the lives the Germans took in WWll - they showed no mercy to the Nations they marched thru. Remember what they did to poor Poland.
Wonder if BBC next project will be to make a documentary of how RAF with RPG on the 3rd of May 1945 sank the Cap Arcona and Thielbek with more than 7500 KZ prisoners onboard in the Bay of Lübeck. May be RAF prefer to forget this dissaster in the last days of the WWII. Approx 6000 lives was lost according to the book Target Cap Arcona by Günther Schwarzberg.
@sanderrodijk The worst loss of life on a ship that I am aware of is a german liner sunk in the Baltic in 1945 taking mainly refugees from Konigsberg (Kalinagrad) to the main part of Germany. It is estimated that 4500 people died, the exact number is not know as the war was nearing the end and things were somewhat chaotic. I cannot remember the name of the ship.
@Elissandre It isn't a movie, it is a 2 part drama. I think (hope I'm right) you should be able to access it irrespective of your country via BBCiplayer (Google it) select/click on BBC2 and you will find it for 6/1/11 and 7/1/11 at 9.00pm. Each part is 1.5 hours long, well worth watching !! Another brilliant drama/film is 'Das Boot' elements of which you can find on Youtube very well worth watching. Hope this helps.
I just read in wikipedia about this incident, and what a horribly sad tragedy that became! When the germans understood what they had subk, they rescued the surviving passengers and were later all killed by trigger-happy american pilots even though they displayed red cross flags on the U-boats! I never knew about this tragedy, but I'll certainly try to watch the BBC-film. Thumbs up, of course.
@winterstellar If you read ALL the wikipedia article, you'd know those "trigger-happy American pilots" held their attack until they radioed for instructions from their command. A tragic series of events, but blaming those pilots is heading in the wrong direction. The nature of the war at sea at that time created the mind-set on the part of all of the players in the situation that ended this way. There are several excellent books on the subject, & I suggest you avail yourself of them.
@terreplein Yes, that was a bit prejudiced and dumb by me. And I can't use it as an excuse that "the article was so long" either. So sorry about that, but I will read up on it and I hope to see the miniseries myself as we have 4 BBC channels in my country. Cheers:)
@dmzagi You can arm-chair quaterback the situation all you want...you weren't there, you're not a B-24 pilot, it's not WWII, so your 'choice' is irrelevant.

International viewers of this movie clip, please don't forget the 1.400 italians POW drowned into the sinking ship.
We were your ennemies but we were human beings as well.
Our hands were cut to avoid our rescue on the lifeboats reserved to english only.
