The video is a beauty, LC's voice is deep and warm. Thank you for all your exceptionel songs, Mister Cohen......I listen to your CD's every day, cannot live without them.....

    Blessed Be;

    Althea

  • when you feel every word...see every note in your mind.....thankyou Mr Cohen

  • im 105 and i still listen to this!

  • no janis and no more chelsea hotel :(

  • I read this song is about him and Janis Joplin having a go at it at the Chelsea Hotel in NY....good song.

  • "And clenching your fist for the ones like us

who are oppressed by the figures of beauty

you fixed yourself, you said, "Well never mind,

we are ugly but we have the music"

This could be my favourite set of lyrics from any song, it's just so beautiful.

  • @FolkingBrilliant Totally agree. Gives me chills.

  • 21 people have never received head on an unmade bed.

  • Nice to have both my languages in this video :)

Leonard Cohen is one of our country's greatest musicians ever. His presence and influence will remain eons after his death.

  • @Lamporre what country are you from?

  • @Hadarchik

    Canada.

  • @Hadarchik hahahahahaha

  • waaaao

  • that final refrain is one of the most beautifully cruel lines in music to my mind

  • Uit welk TV-programma komt dit?

    m.v.g.

  • I don't mean to sugest that I love you to death

  • @gestrincha Actaully, he sings "I don't mean to suggest that I loved you the best".

  • @marik374 I whole-heartedly disagree.

  • @marik374 boo!

  • Janis ♥

  • I love this song..

Cohen is amazing, he reminds me of somebody I know

    Thanks for upload!!

  • we are ugly, but we have the music

  • I remember you well in the derrynane hotel......

  • he wrote this song for Janis Joplin ...

  • I'd forgotten how much I love this song.

  • ' the favourite game' is one of my absolute fav books!

  • of me too !

  • Buzzing street lights in 65, while riding down broadway, I saw him raise a fist and knock on air, giving honorary mention, on a sidewalk, with licorice aromatics and things to come; a riot in mind and lost roads yet to try; I was driving down the hours, until the great eruption, the beautiful hydrogen plume, that turned my earliest stages to glass; of misunderstanding.

  • @MrFartmonkey I chose deep coma puffs for months; hoping for a big bang difference, but saw more of the same, those political chants and the binge melody; spread my head from ear to nose, and dripped to a kneeling pose that hurt the knees; that he created.

    )))))

  • I wonder how many Chelseas stay in the Chelsea Hotel? I would love to.....the front desk people probably get tired of it. "not another one!" :P

  • A poet , an Artist .....the creation of beauty for the soul.......Bravo

  • This is such an incredible song written for an incredible soul...

  • I hear a little Waltz #2 by E.S. in this...

  • it sounds nothing like waltz #2. just cos they both have #2 in the name? what?

  • You can go ahead and qualify your comment as such, "it sounds nothing like waltz #2 to me"...

I was thinking of the bass notes abstractly coupled with the listless rhythm that is present in both tunes... I didn't say you had to, or even could, hear it.

  • this video sucks for this song so bad =(

  • Janis I love you tears dry

  • Hoe bedenk je het om giving me head on the unmade bed te vertalen met en je liet me begaan op het onopgemaakte bed en you fixed yourself met staarde je naar jezelf? Geniaal gewoon!

  • @tinusdr Ik vroeg me precies hetzelfde af.

  • Posting this right after the loss of Farrah Fawcett & Michael Jackson -- this song is especially poignant right about now.

If there is a G-d, could You please let Mr Cohen stay with us just as long as he wants to, mmkay?

We really can't afford to lose him too soon...

    Thank You

  • this song Mr.Cohen wrote in memory of JANIS JOPLIN !

    thaks for upload!

  • I'm not sure he's a douche, he made a few good points about this video. And I was just looking at his profile what music he liked, you stupid prick.

  • I'm nearly crying

  • ah but you got away...didnt you babe?

  • And you are 28? Did you notice this video was made when you where still pissing your pants. And yes, there were no mobile phones and no graphic internet back then. So, who's retarded?

  • Cheese is cheese... regardless of time. The only thing good about this is the song. The filmmaker doesn't even interpret it properly. Two hot people is not what this song is about... fuck it!

  • So what's good about that Matt and Kim video on your profile?

  • He and Mr. Dylan are amazing... I wonder how they stay fascinating?

    Thank you!

  • Nobody knows what they do in private! It's why Britney spears is so boring.

  • oh i reyt frank lad

  • This song is about his relationship with Janis Joplin. One of my all time favorite songs.

  • Strange video, seems to miss the point. You don't get it, do you?

  • Perhaps you should try to find the rest of the bits of 'I am a hotel' (they are about on the web) to understand this bit in context.

  • A generous response to my comment. Thank you. Obviously I didn't get it. Great collection.

  • Be-a-u-ti-ful

  • Despite his first album being my favourite...

This song is just absolutely perfect in every way :)

I just wish I got to see him live..which I'll probably get to now :(

  • *not get to

P.S. Come on Lenny..please please tour again soon!

  • I actually picture myself running down the Chelsea Hotel's long stairs, walking out on the one I will forever love... This song is truly about the love of your life... Just lovely.

  • I almost cried at Leonard concert in Italy this summer. One of greates experiences in my life.

  • Fuck you if you knee-jerk associate basic feelings that Cohen encapsulates so well with the protestant abortion of modern christmas. If you want to be emotionally manipulated into slavery and shallowness keep it out of the commons bible thumper

  • alright then dick head, you write a song that's at least half decent and then become a fucking music critic!

  • I'm a big leonard cohen fan, and think there's a lot of great canadian artists of era whose influence is underappreciated?

i was just protesting some sap coopting a brilliant artist for their commercial and shallow bs, so we cool

  • This song is perfect. For everything. Now it's perfect for looking-forward-to-christmas.

  • Lol isnt it about sex or something rofl.

  • This song is about a one night stand he had with Janis Joplin when they were bothe were totally shit-faced.............he told the story before singing it live sometime around the mid 90's.....the grin on his face told you he was telling it from memory..........cool man. Shame he got ripped off by his manager wife.......

  • ..once and a while i come over here ....to see this video...and everytime it brings me the tears...beautiful..heavenly beautiful..everytime a little more...

  • Just perfect.

  • Man,this guys work stands like a monolith in popular music.

I see it as no mean tribute that Bono and U2 backed him on "Tower of Song" for the documentary "I'm Your Man".

  • great

  • ¿Podría alguien poner la letra traducida de la canción?Gracias.

  • Marvellous

  • Hey, head and bed rhyme!

  • haha

  • Those dutch subs are great.

  • did you know that this song was written about janis joplin

  • disregard the first portion of my last post. I am still wondering though what would be a good starter album for newbs to LC?

  • I would suggest his debut 'Songs of Leonard Cohen'.

  • No Way,the "best of" collection released in '76,that is just my humble opinion of course

  • Definitely Songs of Leonard Cohen or Songs of love and hate. In fact, any of his first four albums, after that he sort of turned his back on the acoustic guitar and went for more of a big band sound. And if its this song you're after, its on New skin for old ceremony, which is his fourth. Basically, you can't go far wrong cos the man's a stone cold genius.

  • I heard a song by him today about being ugly one line was like "you said you usually go for handsome men but this time you'll make an exeption" or something along those lines sorry for not having more details. I just found out about leonard cohen can someone recommend a good album to start with.

  • Simply incredible... Roll on November when I will see the great man live in Manchester. Can't wait ;)

  • sad-eyed lady...

  • Gorgeous. I stayed at the Chelsea with my then girlfriend during my first weekend in New York four years ago. This song so beautifully captures the pain of unresolved loss in an often cruel city. (Yes, I'm still heart broken. No, I don't think of her that often.) Thanks for posting.

  • Written for Janis Joplin, iirc...

  • beautiful

  • sure this is beautiful, one word, I am glad to see Leonard Cohen live at 12 july in amsterdam, after 20 years playing his records I an going to see him alive.

  • is there a song named chelsea hotel no. 1, if so will mr. cohen ever release it?

  • I think the original Chelsea Hotel was the same lyrics, he just changed a couple of lines here and there (like the line "you just turned your back on the crowd" which I think was originally written as " You just threw it all to the ground")

  • the chelsea hotel is an inspiring place to stay - choose the higher price rooms if you're not interested to make due.

  • what are the rates?

  • $99/night during the week to share a bathroom. there are artist studios in there, so it's like sharing a bathroom in someone's house. on the weekends i think it starts at $200, even to share a bathroom, which is steep for nyc when you can share a bathroom for no more than $130 in a nice neighborhood.

  • hey, thanks a lot for the quick response. after i saw ur original post, i searched for "chelsea hotel nyc" but nothing came up for the hotel itself. anyway, you say share a bathroom. you do get a personal room, right? how are the rooms? and with this room, you share the bathroom, i take it is ur meaning.

  • open window,white dress,lift me up

  • thanks God

  • o.ç

  • Beautiful.

  • Leonard Cohen and Janis Joplin were briefly lovers and had a tryst at the Chelsea. If in New York, you should check out the Chelsea. Many poets and musicians stayed there. Cohen, Dylan Woody Guthrie amongst them. As well as Dylan Thomas, from whom Bob Dylan adopted his name.

  • He may have had an encounter with Nico in

     the Chelsea..

  • Algum tuga me sabe dizer se o cohen já veio a portugal? só para saber se sou tão idiota ao ponto de não ter ido

  • tb gostava de saber...

  • em julho...

  • I love this song so much.

The Regina Spektor version is amazing too. But this is the original, nothing tops the original :)

  • HERMOSO VIDEO..........

  • Kool... He was Janis's boyfriend..."Wontcha but me a Mercedes Benz, my friends all drive Porches I must make amends....".Yes she did sing that one...

  • De Nederlandse ondertiteling is belabberd.

  • one of the best songs

  • whats the connection between cohen and janis?

also did she do that mercedes song.

  • Janis was the one with him in Chelsea Hotel... she was giving, ahem, something to him on an unmade bed. This is the song that came from that event.....

  • Was it a Christmas hem?

  • really? i didnt think they had much to do with each other...

  • Hence...the song.

  • awesome poetry

  • Really?? I thought Marianne Faithfull was his lost love..

  • completely different marianne.... he was in love with some swedish or norwegian woman named marianne, who inspired him in a lot of things..

  • Every time I listen to this song I hardly cannot hold my tears!!It's an awesome love song, very different from the kind of lovesongs we're used to hear..

  • i love leonard almost as much as i love bob dylan!!!

  • "There was a hotel in NYC where a lot of musicians used to stay.Among them there was a great singer.I used to bump into her in the elevator about 3 in the morning, compltly by mistake. She wasn't looking for me,she was looking for Kris Kristofferson. And I was looking for Brigitte Bardot. We fell into each other's arms.Last time I saw her was on 23d Street. She said,Hey man, you in town to read poetry for old ladies? That was her view of my career. After she died,I wrote this song for her,Janis Joplin.

  • That's what Leonard Cohen often used to say in his concerts, just before he would performed this song...

  • who are you? you sound interesting.

  • Are you talking to me? *looks around in disbelief*

    ;))

  • i just love the lyrics. it really describes a night janis.

  • does anyone know if leonard cohen wrote this song before or after janis joplin died. this is a really great song.

  • It appeared on his 1974 album "New Skin for the Old Ceremony", so I presume it was written after her death. That would seem to fit the lyrics.

  • Yes, innapropriate video. But what an amazing tribute to his lost love, Janis Joplin, done only in a way that a true poet would.

  • Great Cohen song, but horrible video.

  • agreed!

  • Stand up Cohen.

  • go; fuck yourselves.

  • yea its bout janis....

this is one of my favorite songs but this video sucked donkey dick. whoever made it should stick a cob of corn up their own ass and pump cheese up their nostrils.

  • i'm just kidding. it's actually very cool. But I figured i'd get some people offended to see what they'd say.

  • Then you're an idiot, SunEyes27. crude one, too.

  • It's clearly about Janis Joplin - you can read it in any Cohen biography. And the lyrics obviously fit...

  • i always heard it was about janis

  • had nothing to do with Janis...its such a sad speculation...Nico and a few others were in play..but not Janis

  • It was written about Janis. Look it up.

  • Just like you were telling me sweetheart...brings me back to that moment...I'll be there with you soon.

  • Gracias por la canción.

  • This song is actually about his affair with Janis Joplin. Of course this video is suppose to reflect our general perceptions of media-beauty to satisfy the masses. When in actuality Leonard was the only one who got older, while Janis tragically lost her life to heroine. But if you notice at the beginning of the video he's actually the one deeply reflecting that moment in the past.

  • ...affair with janis joplin? are you serious? where did you hear this?

  • You can read it in many places. In fact somewhere here on youtube (if it's still up) is a live concert of him stating this is a song he wrote for Janis Joplin, and then begins to play Chelsea Hotel.

  • Loved this highly creative video interpretation of this song...

  • Thanks for all great musics we are waiting to TURKEY for concert

  • Leonard you soothe these cocaine blues i have found.. thanks for the upload yangcy, cheers from canada

  • I love you Leonard! But you always make me cry....

    joanie in Bisbee, Az.

  • with dutch subtitles nice

  • I simply love this song and this video...incredible!

  • One of my all time favourite songs! So much feeling and thought are conveyed in just a few lines.

  • Great track

  • His presence will always warm my skin and soul.

His wisdom, his knowledge, his love, and his generousity in sharing it all with us.

    Thank you Leonard.

    Love from NORWAY

  • Greatest eulogy Janis Joplin could have ever asked for.

  • Yeah... I wonder if she really said all that things... "we're ugly but we have the music..." - it's beautiful.

  • I think everything Leonard touched has that incredible

angle - he can talk about most lustful love and mention

Virgin Mary (well maybe not literally). But in his own

Universe there is that incredible overlap between sacred

and profane. Almost like what Tibethan Buddhism belief

is - there is NO SIN except for ignorance of your own

    actions.

  • "Ah but you got away, didn't you babe,

you just turned your back on the crowd,

you got away, I never once heard you say,

    I need you, I don't need you."
