The funny thing is even back in the day when video games weren't being taken as seriously as they are now, the Japanese always took it very seriously and had top composers come in to make music for most of their top games. Probably why you see all these videos on youtube re-creating old video game music they remember, cuz they didn't get as much credit or taken that seriously back in the day.

Not to imply that the notable video game composers (Koji Kondo, Nobou, Yasunori Mitsuda) aren't great, but they certainly weren't acclaimed or even recognized composers before they started writing for games. Shit, I'm pretty sure during the 8 and 16 bit era it was more or less the case that someone on the design team knew a bit about music and just wrote some.
