You need to admire German soldiers, the spirit, courage and honour they have and they still have it. Germany will awlays be 1 of the best countries in battlefield and that is just fact. My Opa served in the Waffen-SS for most of the war, somehow survived, then survived the post-war imprisonment. He came to Australia and raised a family. He was a severely traumatized man and his kids had to deal with that and being bullied by local kids who called them Nazis. Two of them committed suicide. My Opa virtually suicided as well, allowing a curable ailment to run its course.

Thank you for posting this. They look like soldiers from the Western front. My dad fought on the eastern. Still, it's the first time I've felt that someone has remembered him. Growing up in Canada, it was hard when Nov. 11 came around, and everyone could grieve their fallen relatives, but not if you were German. At last, 65 years later, people seem to be in a more forgiving mood. I'm glad of that, because he was just an ordinary guy, doing his duty to his country, and deserves to be remembered.

@wisers001 The regular SS troops and Wehrmacht troops had nothing to do with any of the death camps. After the rugular troops moved out of a recently captured area, the Special action squads moved in. For instance, when the Canadian troops were forced to surrender after the raid on Dieppe, a German soldier came up to a Canadian soldier, punched him in the face and knocked him to the ground. The German officer who was in charge at the time shot the Wehrmacht soldier on the spot for doing that.
@tubbymarshall This soldier was a member of 1st LSSAH Panzer Division, 2nd company of Panzergrenadier Regiment 1. Unfortunately his name and rank remains unknown, however he survived the war and fled to America.
The photo itself was taken in 1944 near the village of Poteau, where his company ambushed and destroyed American Armored Cavalry detachment.

I am a US Veteran of Vietnam and the gulf; I also lived in Germany for 11 years. I lived off base and had War story sessions with my German friends. We discovered the only difference in us was the uniform. We were soldiers and fought for our counties. We followed orders, as soldiers should. We had no control over Politics and our world centered on staying alive and returning home to our families. I salute both US and German soldiers

@HelenaXVI For example, at the gates of Auschwitz at the end of WWII, there was a plaque stating that 4 million jews were gassed there. Now after all these years there is a different plaque, and it states that there were 750,000 people who were in the camp.
A research team was there some years ago and tested the walls of the so-called gas chamber and took samples of paint and concrete off the floor and walls and found that there was no sign of the ziclonB gas that was said to have been used.
@stevehetzer1 They didn't find traces of ZB there because the chambers had to be reconstructed after war because the Nazis blew them up before leaving. Even though nobody tries to conceal this, Holocaust deniers like to shout that the chambers are partially reconstructed. But they conveniently dismiss this part when it comes to "proving" that there are no traces of ZB there... :)

History will always be with the winner. The defeated will not have any light to shed. To many propaganda suppport "Germany is Evil" , but in reality , it's the opposite. The are soldiers , they are meant to do one thing , FOLLOW ORDERS , just like any other soldier on different nations.
I remember when President Reagan caught a lot of flak at home here (from liberals of course) when he visited a German war memorial. I thought it was a gesture of friendship.

You need to admire German soldiers, the spirit, courage and honour they have and they still have it. Germany will awlays be 1 of the best countries in battlefield and that is just fact. Germans has fought more than most of the countries in this world. I dont admire Hitler and his actions, but for German soldier I give my rispect and I hope nobody jugde them as a nazis.

@Eshayzbra96 Well the Totenkopf served as the 3rd Waffen SS Division. But they DID become prison guards before they became a front line division. Branches like the Einzatsgruppen are the killers. The rest, no, just soldiers.

You shouldnt believe all the lies what allies propaganda says to you. Ofcourse Waffen - SS commited warcrimes, but I believe that Allies also commited warcrimes.

We cannot exactly label these soldiers as villains for they merely died serving their country. Do we as Americans label our soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan villains? We do not, we shout it loud that they are heroes for fighting and dying for this country. The German soldiers throughout history have done no more, no less. The resilience they showed fighting against remarkable odds and in the face of certain defeat is aspiring to any military.

My Opa served in the Waffen-SS for most of the war, somehow survived, then survived the post-war imprisonment. He came to Australia and raised a family. He was a severely traumatized man and his kids had to deal with that and being bullied by local kids who called them Nazis. Two of them committed suicide. My Opa virtually suicided as well, allowing a curable ailment to run its course.
I miss you Opa, and I take back all my judgements!

Many German soldiers in WW2 were just decent young men who fought not for Hitler, but for their Fatherland, for their beloved, for their comrades. They sacrificed their lives for their country and therefore, they deserved to be remembered and respected. Thank you for posting this. They look like soldiers from the Western front. My dad fought on the eastern. Still, it's the first time I've felt that someone has remembered him. Growing up in Canada, it was hard when Nov. 11 came around, and everyone could grieve their fallen relatives, but not if you were German. At last, 65 years later, people seem to be in a more forgiving mood. I'm glad of that, because he was just an ordinary guy, doing his duty to his country, and deserves to be remembered.

@wisers001 The regular SS troops and Wehrmacht troops had nothing to do with any of the death camps. After the rugular troops moved out of a recently captured area, the Special action squads moved in. For instance, when the Canadian troops were forced to surrender after the raid on Dieppe, a German soldier came up to a Canadian soldier, punched him in the face and knocked him to the ground. The German officer who was in charge at the time shot the Wehrmacht soldier on the spot for doing that.

@tubbymarshall This soldier was a member of 1st LSSAH Panzer Division, 2nd company of Panzergrenadier Regiment 1. Unfortunately his name and rank remains unknown, however he survived the war and fled to America.
The photo itself was taken in 1944 near the village of Poteau, where his company ambushed and destroyed American Armored Cavalry detachment.

@GermanWarRemembrance Probably the rank of Rottenfuhrer,or "corporal" judging by the fact he is carrying binoculars, side arm and ammo, most likely at the section level. Higher ranking soldiers would have been carrying the MP-40 sub machine gun.

I am a US Veteran of Vietnam and the gulf; I also lived in Germany for 11 years. I lived off base and had War story sessions with my German friends. We discovered the only difference in us was the uniform. We were soldiers and fought for our counties. We followed orders, as soldiers should. We had no control over Politics and our world centered on staying alive and returning home to our families. I salute both US and German soldiers

I have just finished reading a book written by Kurt Meyer who of course was with the 1st SS Liebstandart Adolf Hitler. They fought the Russians and nobody raped women and children, or shit on the doorsteps of houses. The victors write history and can twist it to any level they want to so as to create thier enemy as some kind of "demon", and the unknowing end up believing the bullshit.

@HelenaXVI For example, at the gates of Auschwitz at the end of WWII, there was a plaque stating that 4 million jews were gassed there. Now after all these years there is a different plaque, and it states that there were 750,000 people who were in the camp.
A research team was there some years ago and tested the walls of the so-called gas chamber and took samples of paint and concrete off the floor and walls and found that there was no sign of the ziclonB gas that was said to have been used.

Even though nobody tries to conceal this, Holocaust deniers like to shout that the chambers are partially reconstructed. But they conveniently dismiss this part when it comes to "proving" that there are no traces of ZB there... :)

@edderd8 Reality is more than figures. Hitler never got the power to realize his plans. If he won WW2, ALL Jews, Slavs, Roma etc would be dead and Moscow would be turned into a huge artificial lake.
