If almost all of your weight is on your right leg, you can't stick it out. This play was unfortunate, but Ovechkin didn't stick his leg out and his intent wasn't to injure Gonchar. In contrast, there is a definite moment when you can see Cooke stick out his leg, and his intention was absolutely to injure Ovechkin.

Knee on knee hits are happening more because almost every open ice hit now is being called. Instead of going for the body, the players try to dodge eachother, which ends in a knee on knee collision. If almost all of your weight is on your right leg, you can't stick it out. This play was unfortunate, but Ovechkin didn't stick his leg out and his intent wasn't to injure Gonchar. In contrast, there is a definite moment when you can see Cooke stick out his leg, and his intention was absolutely to injure Ovechkin.

The only way Gonchar could have avoided that hit was if he pulled his leg in at the last second...and it's pretty evident he barley got a glimpse of Ovi before he was hit so I really don’t think he could have avoided that. If Ovi was going for a legit body check he would have squared himself up...not match shoulder tip to shoulder tip with Gonchar with his right leg extended out. Knee on knee hits are happening more because almost every open ice hit now is being called. Instead of going for the body, the players try to dodge eachother, which ends in a knee on knee collision. I'm not saying all knee on knee collisions are accidents but most are. 90% of the new nhl changes have ended up hurting more players than actually helping them. Thanks a lot bettman.

@tonajim: please explain to me where OV "jumps" he never left his feet until AFTER contact, which most people when they hit players end up leaving the ice AFTER contact. now like i said before Gonchar is the one who caused this, take a look at 0:43 notice how Gonchar is trying to poke the puck arund OV, he reached for it and made himself longer, OV held his groud and NEVER moved. Gonchar got in his path. OV did nothing wrong by the rule book. Gonchar made the mistake that caused this.

Youre right Crosby has more TEAM trophies and has played on better TEAMS thats not even an arguement. As far as PERSONAL accomplishments Crosby isn't close. My love and allegiance are only with the game and something we can agree their rivalry enriches the game to the point Penguins are levelled with Steelers and the Caps levelled with the Redskins...
Both players are just part of a bigger picture, Hockey!

@Zev121 I'd have to disagree with the Caps being leveled with the Redskins... Caps are considered an NHL ELITE team as of the past few years something the Redskins havn't been since the late 80's early 90's. I will agree on the premise that both players are talented and neither one of them suck and same goes for both teams. I simply love the sport. I love the Caps but can watch any hockey game no matter what the team

he is a good player...... but he is also a very dirty player... one day he will do this to the wrong person in the NHL and he'lll have to pay for it.... you dont do this crap to other profesionals... especially veterans like Gonchar...... and for the morons who said it wasnt intentional....wake the fuck up no one in the nhl skates with that wide of a stride... he got over excited and tried to hit Gonchar.. in ANY way he could
