Great seeing this, but whoever thought this was a single and one to promote on television was off the deep end. They should have played "See Emily Play".
i like the way syd, unknowingly, seems to look at clark as if to say, "'yea, that's right and whatya gonna do about it" then punch him in the face....lol.......clark gave him two opportunities to shine on the camera then quickly walked away.......lol
only in the 60s could something this weird creep their way into jimmy and marysues living room....and yet nobody lets on 'hey this is making me feel [extremely] uncomfortable right now"......as it should be.
Have you ever realized that when you watch a video of Barrett-era Pink Floyd it's very hard to look at anyone other than Syd? He had such an incredible stage presence that I nearly forgot Nick Mason, Rick Wright, and Roger Waters were original Floyd members.
Was he psychotic? Or was he just acting this way because this was simply too silly for him, I mean thats what he had to do to get his art out there. Sit there and lip-sync songs, and even though it's commercially accepted, it's goddamn ridiculous. That's how I see it. He wasn't chasing money, or fame. He just wanted to create art. This whole idea of being a pop star is just lame, and he knew it, he was just fucking with people. I'm not saying he didn't lose it later on though.
@AngieAcidic. when he asks roger what did u guys eat and roger answers 2 cheeseburgers. the host asked are they sitting well. if asked syd this series of stupid questions, it would be awkward how he would answer
You guys are ALL wrong - I know why Syd looks so distraught here.
The story goes that right before going on this show, an American hairstylist botched Syd's perm. As someone who seemed to put alot into his "look", he'd have been understandably pissed about it - voila, an explanation for this performance. I feel his pain - I've had a stylist butcher my hair before too, and as someone who's a bit vain about my hair, it made me super sad :(
@candysays69 try going bald....quickly. cry me a river. and syd is clearly seeing the permanent spiraling vortex that LSD produces. i know that look. notice how dick skips right over him after one unclear response. LOL for syd though. i feel his pain; or lack thereof.
@pectinman Syd said they'd been there for about ten days, nothing unclear about that. Dick Clark was just trying to get everyone in the band included in the interview.
Mental disabilities are very different than physical disabilities when it came to performance, touring, songwriting etc, Syd just couldn't keep up with their touring schedule as time went on.....Evelyn Glennie is hearing impaired while Ian Dury was crippled but their minds were still intact..not familiar w/ David Helfgott.......bottom line, mental disabilities are really the most debilitating in the long run
@EndlessNot1 In the long run, talental disabilities are really the most debilitating... the world will still love mentally disabled Syd... when talentally disabled Dave will be forgotten for a long time
Come to think about it, actually Pink Floyd were a very progressive group back then... they performed live with a disabled person... long before Ian Dury, Evelyn Glennie and David Helfgott became famous!
i have to amend my last statement, i like many of the songs on Syd's solo recordings including "Opel"...although there are songs on those recordings that are disturbing and should've been left out but they are what they are warts and all....
they're boring because Syd was slipping into mental illness and Dave as well as others tried to work with him to get the material out...whether they were boring or not is besides the point...the rest of the band decided to keep going..whether you like it or not, it turned out to be a great decision..get over it and enjoy your "Piper..." album...
your comments belong on "boob tube", not you tube...like i said, if Syd would've kept his wits about him, he would've still been in charge...so accept it and quit whining about Gilmour...he put a lot of hard work into helping Syd put out his two solo albums
@EndlessNot1 Syd not being in charge is no excuse for dragging on and on as a pseudo Pink Floyd outfit with a busker instead of a genius... As for Syd's solo albums, they are a deception... they're really quite boring and Dave Gilmour was not able to make them any better.
you're a laugh and it's talent, not "telent" which you probably can't recognize anyway
seeing how you spelled it...quit spouting baloney and read the Barrett book if you can..you can't blame Gilmour for the book since he has nothing to do with it
@EndlessNot1 I never blamed Gilmore for the book, but for taking Syd's place in Pink Floyd. It was quite obvious that Syd's shoes were far too big for buskin' Dave. It took a marketing genius to sell Pink Floyd records without Syd's cooperation. It's like the idea of selling Beatles records without Paul and John.
@EndlessNot1 Dave Gilmore singing Syd's wonderful music with his thin, aging voice and sleepy middle of the road accompaniment... what an atrocious idea! Way to go Dave...
@1ndi64 I assume you can read, if so, you should read Rob Chapman's "A Very Irregular Head", The Life of Syd Barrett, a biography approved by Syd's family..very accurate from his early days to his elderly years...it dispels most of your ridiculous Pink Floyd fun facts and anti Gilmour bunk...also the Barrett release is a compilation, not a tribute with Gilmour singing..you create wonderful unrealities..
@EndlessNot1 But he plays bass guitar, that's a sacrilege as well. Who needs a compilation compiled by a telent free Busker? I certainly don't. You will certainly reply «I do» because you always need to have the last word... but remember: I will have the last laugh!
windy, you wanna start this old pointless argument again, bring it on....as far as "Waffles" and "Molson", you bullied them off the site with your put downs...doesn't work with me....long live Barrett-Wright-Gilmour-Waters-Mason!!!
@EndlessNot1 Yeah, long live Dave Gilmore, btw did you know: that one was a Busker... a great replacement for Syd! I do wonder if Dave released his barmy, smeary Syd «tribute» album! I'm quite glad that Syd cannot hear it
@EndlessNot1 Oh no, Niagara Falls' wickedest Roger Waters fan is stalking 'n bullying me again! Listen, this is a song, not boring plinkety-plonk, OK. Btw, where's your sidekick Waffles? And how is Miss Molson?
Amazing footage, thanks for sharing. Pink Floyd at their creative peak, they should have disbanded at this point because they weren't half as good without Syd. I'm not sure though whether Nick, Roger and Rick really knew how good this song is.
Jesus I've waited YEARS to see this, thanks a million for posting it. I have to say its not actually as bad as I'd heard and having read Rob Chapman's A Very Irregular Head it does seem as if Barrett just had a pain in his bollocks with the whole thing and wasn't arsed anymore. Thanks for posting it once again.
Clearly Syd didn't want to be there and I don't blame him. Often he turns his face away from the camera. But he looks more sullen than anything. The whole 'Syd was too wasted to play' angle is overdone. Anyone who listens to the performances at Copenhagen and Rotterdam and the BBC recording they did around this time can hear that he could still sing and play quite well.
Syd is definitely tripping here...as he was most of the time...NOT because of LSD HERE...but because he was a genious. :) answers the questions correctly, kind etc.
25 years ago we only heard anecdotes about these 'mythical' appearances. It's like legalising hard drugs, it does not matter any more. I've seen it and that's it.
As David Gilmour has attested, what happened with Barrett was in no way 'mythical' or 'glamourous' which, because of his looks and artistic sensibilities, many people have thought it for instance someone on here saying "Madcap genius" as if its charming and cute.Syd became seriously ill and undoubtedly vulnerable to psychosis before acid. But he was only 21 when he became very ill and all the acid was very bad for him.He was not meant to be any kind of pop star with his sensitive temperament
@buewgewstmeiers what's your point or your problem ? that you HAVE to say that ; whats that got to do with YOU ? Dont understand why you HAVE to say to anyone who has read books and biographies about someone which include in depth interviews with his close friends, and express their opinion based on those facts, that they dont 'know' him ; i mean what IS the point ? just cos you couldnt think of anything more interesting but merely wanted to be argumentative for the SAKE of it ?
I'm sure I have that bit on a video where he refuses to mime, but don't besiege me. Maybe it was made to look that way for a music doc I have. I'll have to find it to look again
Re this, great to see it but what was that cameraman playing at?
by clicking the boxed X in the corner of the web browser, unless of course the web browser you use is without boxed X, in this case you could pause the music, exit your browser another way, shoot your computer with a loaded 12 gauge or destroy the music provider another way, this would stop the ten second dream sequence
He was pretty tripped out by this point, but I think he was also rebelling against having to mime, as he did on Pat Boone. You can tell none of them want to be miming "Apples and Oranges" to a bunch of clean cut American kids in the studio, not to mention across the nation, who must have been flummoxed at what they were hearing. Man, I've got to invent time travel. I'll go do that right now.
@johnfright Syd was into the whole creative side of the music and experimenting with sound. Syds brain was totally fried from LSD at this point. He was only in the band for 3 more months before he was booted.

I love DCs intro: "The Pink Floyd!"

Actually, he was not unique in that regard: Many were referring to the group with the introductory "The" in their early years.

firstly it was the pink floyd sound...probably this is a reason why...

Amazing that a song like that could be considered "commercial" enough to release as a single.

"Jugband Blues" was considered as a potential single after "Apples & Oranges" !!! Which is why there is a promo film for it. I love both but they're not "pop singles" for sure :)
