@Musclehead125 Well tempered High carbon steel all the way. If you want a real functional sword you shouldn't settle for anything less. Stainless steel is ok for knives, or if you just want a decorative sword as a wall hanger. But if you want a real sword, there really is no substitute for high carbon steel. There's a reason why it's been the standard for centuries.
@Musclehead125 To be honest, I'd be highly suspicious. Granted, I've seen some fantastic deals in auctions and places that sell used swords, and sometimes people will price swords really low when they're trying to get rid of them. But if the blade is new, and at that price range, then something was usually sacrificed somewhere. If the blade really is high carbon steel, then the next thing to check is if it was tempered well, and how well built the sword is. Those factors are also important.
Display swords are usually made to just hang on a wall, not to be handled. So companies tend to skimp on the things that you would look for in a functional sword, namely things like proper tempering of the blade, using the right kind of steel, sturdy full length tangs, a well fitted hilt, and overall decent construction. The last bit is really important: there are a lot of swords where the blade just flies from the handle.
... This is really dangerous, not just to you but anyone around you. I've see many times a guy swinging a cheap display sword, and people ducking as sharp metal death comes flying at them.
Now, I have also seen display swords that were very sturdy and well constructed, so much so that you could swing them around in the empty air. But they are still just for decoration, so they wouldn't be proper for cutting, or even light sparing against someone with another weapon. So keep that in mind.
@Musclehead125 Generally they just mean that it's able to be used. You would think it would mean it's able to cut well, but sometimes I've seen people use the term "fully functional" for practice swords that have no sharp edges, and/or aren't built to stand the shock from cutting objects, or hitting another weapon. But for the most part, if you're dealing with a reputable dealer, fully functional generally means a sword that can be swing around, and likely has some cutting ability.
@Musclehead125 Check out Kult of Athena. That site is well known to sell swords from various companies at fantastic prices, and you're bound to find a quality blade there. Their katana section is HUGE, and they offer swords from great forges.
Since you seem to be on a tight budget, I recommend you buy swords from that site made by Cheness and Musashi. Cheness is a great company, and their swords are as low as $130. Musashi has really low prices, but be careful. The lower, the worse it is.
looks like a piece of shit you need that two handed grip because you fucking suck lol you wasted you money on this too omg you bought it to practice with a "real sword" your a fuckin kid ahahahahahah i hope you slice your self douche bag
Um, asshole. I use it with ONE hand. The two handed grip is just there because that's how the sword is designed.
By the way, I have yet to cut myself with it. Sorry. It's because I actually know how to use it.
I can see now you're just a troll. SO congratulations. You just made your last comment here. You can continue to make black people look stupid if you want, but you won't do it here.
well douring the time period that steal was begining to be yoused in chinese swords they started makeing a small amount of swords that where created as to handed youse and where most usefull for there ability to lock there aponint making them useless
Great review. I also watched your full review. I liked your stylized movements. Right now I am awating a production-jian. Garrett is selling his production line off at slashed prices, so as to concentrate fully on his custom line. I hope my sword is just as well built. I am having a hard time waiting... its like being nervous before a blind date. "Oh this might be the one this time." LOL
I just ordered a Paul Chen Raptor Unokubi Zukuri. The Hanwei Raptor series swords are 5160 high carbon steel so they can withstand endless test cutting and never lose their edge. Plus I hear that Hanwei is adding a Jin, and Dao design to the Raptor series soon.
Tho I'm pretty loyal to Hanwei, I'll check the link and see what they have to offer.
That is a great piece especially for the price. I visited the website you linked to and looked at the examples shown there.
One question, what is twist core? I'm guessing the metal is twisted as it's folded during construction, what does that do to the metal? Does it make it stronger, keep an edge better?
My experience with swords is mainly from european and some japanese and I've never come across this term before.
Oh..my... That sword is LOVELY! and the technical analysis you provided, even cursory, hit the right points on first observation of a sword. I have so many questions, man! I will PM you, please take the time out to respond, I'm dying to know more!!
nice going, i hope youll make some cutting vids (plzzzzzzzzzz) and another thing, and tsuka, its made for 2 hands right? and when she/he will have a name, you got to tell me it ^_^
That really is a steelgasm. I like a frictional pommel too.
And $300! I've paid almost that for some real POSs!
What a buy!
I don't know what kind of shop/facilities you have some access to, but if you made yourself a steel fake, with total emphasis on matching the weight, balance and gripping surfaces of this, you could leave that in it's pretty box until you feel like you've got your build and coordination about halfway to where you want it. Just a thought.
So I'm thinking you like your sword? Don't you love the sound it makes when it cuts through the air? Mine has a 28 inch blade, with about a 5 inch POB. I hope I can get my hands on a video camera and show it off. I think the han sword is so beautiful and elegant, and I'll probably buy one in the future.
Yeah, it definitely is a hell of a deal. And it's sharp alright. The tip of it had just barely scratched the top of my thumb knuckle, and made a stinging paper thin cut right on it. And it didn't even scratch me along the edge of the blade! The tip just grazed me while moving with the flat side forward!
I can't wait to start cutting with this thing to see how well it does.
wooooooooooow. very beautiful sword, man. if i had the scratch for a piece like that, i'd order one today. when the zombies come a-knockin, you'll be prepared.
It does actually, and helps with the balance as well. I honestly feel that it wouldn't have the perfect (to me anyway) balance it has if it wasn't for the length of the handle. Granted, I don't think the balance would be terribly off with a standard length handle, but it would be noticeable.
Can I ask , what is the sword construction( how many later, what type, etc...) ? I am looking to get a sword but not sure what's is the construction that I could get with limited amount of money.
I plan on doing a full review of the sword later, but I can give you the gist of it now: the blade is made from 1095 high carbon steel, and the fittings are solid brass. I believe the wood is pudak, but I could be mistaken.
The sword set me back 300 bucks, not including shipping. As far as I know, each sword is made to order, so you're going to have to wait a few months after paying to get one.
Thanks for saying that before I did. :P Though to be honest, that's what people are calling those fantasy straight "ninja" swords, for lack of a better term.
Don't be so sure. They may not be traditional japanese designs but that doesn't mean a ninja would turn his nose up at one.
I studied ninjutsu as my first matial art some years ago, and the attitude to weapons was oppportunistic above all else. We spent more time on fending off weapons whilst unarmed and makeshift weapons (like chairs) than the traditional weapons.
A ninja is practical, he's not going to care whether his blade is curved or straight unless it affects the performance.
I have a 1060 high carbon mock up, whateveryouwannafuckingcallit, that is a straight single edged blade. It serves as my short sword. I only use my Katata for rare practice and for tameshigiri demos. The straight blade, I actually carry with me from time to time- like when I go hiking.
Jin Shi is the name of the company I got this from, and the guy who runs it is named Garrett Chan. I forgot to put the link to his site up in the description... I'll go do that now.
Keep in mind that the site doesn't look like much, but trust me, the service more than makes up for it.
Oh, and while I do fancy other designs, I'm mostly into jian simply because those are the swords I basically know how to use. :P While I wouldn't mind owning some swords of different types (like European long swords or Japanese Katana), I am now way too broke for that. This is the last sword I'm going to buy for a while, till I can get back on my feet... and that might take a while.

@Swordsage one more thing can you use display swords as you would use a regular battle sword?
Musclehead125 1 year ago
@Musclehead125 Short answer: no.
Long answer: Depends, but usually no.
Display swords are usually made to just hang on a wall, not to be handled.
