I dated a man who was born here but his parents were born in Cuba. We broke up because we weren't meant to be married but are still good friend. The stories his parents told about pre and post Castro will make you cry. His grandma was killed for having church services in her basement by Castro's people.
I find it interesting in having read only the first 3 or 4 comments that the people posting them aren't as astute, enlightened, or knowledgeable as they pose themselves to be. I read in one of the 3 or 4 that the island was "stolen from us". Who is the "us"? As for dictatorships, Cuba has only had dictatorships even if under the ruse of an election. Cuba has to be my most favorite country in the world. There is no going back to Cuba for all of the people who left but they do not realize this. I worked in Cuba for the EU during the 90´s. All of the properties have been taken over, and people live in wonderful buildings and homes that belonged to very rich people before Castro. All of these people cannot be evicted and thrown on the street. No one from the US is going to be able to get their old properties back. Very complicated.

my grandma is from Cienfuegos, Cuba and she always tells me stories of her life there before she left there with her husband and my mom and aunt. once in a while she cries and wishes everything will get better so she can go back, my wish is to go back with her before her old age takes her. I want to walk the streets she walked and take in where my mom and grandma came from. I pray a miracle will happen.

I live in the Caribbean & i visit Havana quite often (several times for medical treatment), & i love the place.
There is so much potential but the population is being held hostage by those bas***ds, who have no shame.
As for the tourist dollar, i think the money is being used mainly to shore-up the regime (Police, army etc), but i just feel drawn to the place anyway.

It's amazing that with so much empirical before and after evidence, there are still those that will repeat the lies that Cuba was a sub-developed, third-world country plaqued with poverty and disease. I've been around the world and the development, polish and elegance of Havana and its people is not something you see in poverty-stricken countries. That is the sign of development and prosperity. Nowadays, Cuba is a classic Third-World country.

I lived in Hallandale, FL and met tons of beautiful Cuban people. I ate Cuban food and learned Cuban cooking. I absolutly fell in love with the culture yet I never knew Cuba was like this. I had only heard how it is now. People in America who don't know should see this. Thanks for posting.

My grandparents arrived in Cuba during WWI from Germany. They fell in love w/ it. My father (& mother) were raised in the "Old Cuba" & lived through the revolution. I WAS BORN IN CUBA. l left at the age of 9. This brings tears to my eyes.

Además, muchos cubanos-americanos han aprendido español de oídos, de sus abuelos o padres, y no con una metodología escolar adecuada. We had El Country, Miramar, El Vedado, but also Las Yaguas, los llega-y-pon, and a whore's Colon... Old Havana was'nt so glamorous and lots of other not so show-able places. A completa was 25 cents (pretty cheap), but tho earn this quarter was a little bit hard. Now all is ruined, a 'completa' is 25 pesos...

It's amazing to think how much of Havana is still just sitting as it was more than 50 years ago - although very deteriorated.
Someday capitalism will return to Havana, just as it did to Shanghai, East Berlin, Saigon, and Moscow after it had been banished once. When that happens, I'm sure at least some parts of the city will be demolished due to poor condition. And Havana will no longer be as it was in the 1950s.

I was born in Palm Beach, Florida...and I'm very proud of my Cuban ancerstry. I just know things my grandparents and my parents tell me of Cuba before the revolution. There was free commerce, hotels, casions, clubs, the rich lived very well, but like my grandmother said even her family who was considered poor was able to go and but meat, onions, garlic, olive oil, rice, beans, etc. to make big dinners....I have been to Cuban many times with my mother....to say that the country is dead. Sad!

My father lived in Cuba in the mid-late 1940s, and he says it was one of the most vibrant, elegant and sophisticated cities. He adored it more than Rio de Janeiro, where he eventually settled. He loathed Castro for crushing the spirit of Cuba. He also lost friends when Kennedy botched the Bay of Pigs operation...they were tortured and killed. My sister says he cried like a child.

I dated a man who was born here but his parents were born in Cuba. We broke up because we weren't meant to be married but are still good friend. The stories his parents told about pre and post Castro will make you cry. His grandma was killed for having church services in her basement by Castro's people.

Cuba has to be my most favorite country in the world. There is no going back to Cuba for all of the people who left but they do not realize this. I worked in Cuba for the EU during the 90´s. All of the properties have been taken over, and people live in wonderful buildings and homes that belonged to very rich people before Castro. All of these people cannot be evicted and thrown on the street. No one from the US is going to be able to get their old properties back. Very complicated.

my grandma is from Cienfuegos, Cuba and she always tells me stories of her life there before she left there with her husband and my mom and aunt. once in a while she cries and wishes everything will get better so she can go back, my wish is to go back with her before her old age takes her. I want to walk the streets she walked and take in where my mom and grandma came from. I pray a miracle will happen.

It's not all that simple. Cuba looks beautiful today in many ways, and in many ways, those parts of Vedado and the like look exactly the same. No it's not the same, but the world, changes and life goes on and it's better to be there and enjoy it than to sit on the sidelines crying for it. I cry watching this, I cannot bear it. What we had what was stolen from us and for what? What good came out of it all? Nothing but misery and shame for our fellow countrymen who are still stuck in that hell hole.
I have hope though, the Cuban spirit is so strong & indomitable. One day we'll be able to return, hopefully to help rebuild & politically reshape our beloved Cuba. I don't think it'll take as long to rebuild as it has taken the communists to tear down.

There is so much potential but the population is being held hostage by those bas***ds, who have no shame.
As for the tourist dollar, i think the money is being used mainly to shore-up the regime (Police, army etc), but i just feel drawn to the place anyway.

Quieren saber si el resto de Cuba era tan rica como la Habana durante aquella época. También mis estudiantes quieren saber de dónde habían conseguido los’video clips’.

I lived in Hallandale, FL and met tons of beautiful Cuban people. I ate Cuban food and learned Cuban cooking. I absolutly fell in love with the culture yet I never knew Cuba was like this. I had only heard how it is now. People in America who don't know should see this. Thanks for posting.

Además, muchos cubanos-americanos han aprendido español de oídos, de sus abuelos o padres, y no con una metodología escolar adecuada. Aún así le puedo decir que hablan y escriben mejor que muchos cubanos nacidos y criados en Cuba. ¿Cree usted que "Pipo asere que volá" es español? One can only imagine how advanced and beautiful Cuba would be today were it not for the disastrous policies implemented by Castro's communist government. @osallent I agree that every Cuban now is poor in some way. But I also don't think that everything was wonderful. Cuba was a typical Latin American country with great social contrasts... We had El Country, Miramar, El Vedado, but also Las Yaguas, los llega-y-pon, and a whore's Colon... Old Havana was'nt so glamorous and lots of other not so show-able places. A completa was 25 cents (pretty cheap), but tho earn this quarter was a little bit hard. Now all is ruined, a 'completa' is 25 pesos...

It's amazing to think how much of Havana is still just sitting as it was more than 50 years ago - although very deteriorated.
Someday capitalism will return to Havana, just as it did to Shanghai, East Berlin, Saigon, and Moscow after it had been banished once. When that happens, I'm sure at least some parts of the city will be demolished due to poor condition. And Havana will no longer be as it was in the 1950s.

I was born in Palm Beach, Florida...and I'm very proud of my Cuban ancerstry. I just know things my grandparents and my parents tell me of Cuba before the revolution. There was free commerce, hotels, casions, clubs, the rich lived very well, but like my grandmother said even her family who was considered poor was able to go and but meat, onions, garlic, olive oil, rice, beans, etc. to make big dinners....I have been to Cuban many times with my mother....to say that the country is dead. Sad!

Just look at Sugar Production Exports or Rum Exports or any of the other products that Cuba produced pre-Castro. If he is such a great man and leader, why have these industries not thrived during his regime?

@searsmall ABSOLUTELY, well said! Why is it that Cubans in Miami out-produce and out-earn the ENTIRE Cuban Communist nation TEN FOLD? Also they are the largest source of revenue that sickening government actually has. Cubans in Miami send BILLIONS in HARD CURRENCY, not in worthless Cuban pesos that the dictator pays his slaves on his own personal island fiefdom. There have been equal amounts of injustices in America as in Cuba in the past and some still in the present! It's time for both sides to "CUT THE SHIT". All emotions aside, the motives of many men who gave up their professions to fight in the revolution were for the good. These acts of selflessness will always be overshadowed by the more recent tragedy that has become of the Cuban Govt.

But since you like facts: Castro's elite pals hated Baista because he was half black, came from a poor family and he was 'self-educated' . IN CONTRAST: Casro was rich, went to private schools, was a University of Havana alumni, and most impotantly, he was white. Funny how folks default to Batista and KNOW NOTHING ABOUT CASTRO. @USAHavana Wrong, wrong and wrong. Batista was not half-black. He was mixed, but not half-black. Secondly, Castro came from a well-off family, but he himself was not rich. Thirdly, whether Castro was rich or not is a moot point because he put his life in serious danger a dozen times and gave up everything he had to pursue his cause. Fourthly, Castro didn't hate Batista because he was mixed, he hated him because he was a genocidal puppet of the American empire you stupid, stupid fuck.

@USAHavana I think you're right! Nobody cared about Batista's crimes... the only thing the rich people didn't like, is that he was MULATO. Period. If he was white as Machado, may be, Fidel wouldn't have such a great backup from the powerful. In my opinion Cuba's paying a sort of karma (this sounds stupid I know, but our people is paying for it's racism: so, you didn't want a mulato as a president... ok, you'll have a white one... and you'll 'lo que es bueno').

My father lived in Cuba in the mid-late 1940s, and he says it was one of the most vibrant, elegant and sophisticated cities. He adored it more than Rio de Janeiro, where he eventually settled. He loathed Castro for crushing the spirit of Cuba. He also lost friends when Kennedy botched the Bay of Pigs operation...they were tortured and killed. My sister says he cried like a child.
When I see your film, I get a sense of that elegance and vibrancy he spoke of. Thanks for posting.
