We now have turned elections into an "American Idol" competition. They are no better on the Republican side. Other than perhaps Gingrich (who is, whatever one can say about him, certainly well read, intelligent and educated) Facts such as this are items that a historically literate person would always be aware of. And nobody but a historically literate person should be president. It is your own fault America, you have allowed the media to diminish what is demanded of a serious candidate.

@jollyphm1 Sorry, wrong interpretation. Read "Embracing Defeat" by Dower. The concession to not require the Emperor (or any member of the royal family) was made as a signal to the Japanese that occupation would not be as harsh as they feared. The Japanese public understood this, and were relieved by the fact that the Emperor was spared this embarrassment.

I believe Shigemitsu signed aboard Missouri, representing civilian government since US demanded western style signature. Emperor does not sign anything.
