i have not heard but a handful of dolphy solo records and some other as a sideman and seems like he's always playing something different than the band.
I sometimes think that Eric doesn't interact at all well with mingus and his/this band, his first solo for example bares no relation to what the other players are doing, having said this, I love his sensitive flute playing later on in the extended version of this video.
Eric Dolphy is one of the all time great improvisators and his music interacts very well with Mingus'. Their co-work is some of my favorite in the wonderful universe that is music. I also appreciate Byards very unique swing. His time is interesting.

The song is So Long Eric. Dolphy quit the group for a career in Europe. Sadly enough he died not long after that on june 29 1964.
