but it's a clip from "Wattstax", a 1973 documentary film by Mel Stuart that focused on the 1972 Wattstax music festival
The concert was held at the Los Angeles Coliseum on August 20, 1972, and organized by Memphis's Stax Records to commemorate the seventh anniversary of the Watts riots. Wattstax was seen by some as "the Afro-American answer to Woodstock". To enable as many members of the black community in L.A. to attend as possible, tickets were sold for only $1.00 each.
I did the funky chicken on stage with this amazing man when he played in a music bar in Glasgow in the 90's (it was called the Brewhouse I think, previously John Street Jam). What a nite, and what energy that man had, even at his age then!!!
I kind of miss these soul days when people especially black males (rappers) were still not afraid to express themselves in every way. Rap or gangstarap kind of killed this when it was all about looking too cool or too rough and not being gay.
When I was a little kid in the 70's (N.Y.) I thought Barbie, Ken and their crew lived out in California. Never knew it was LIVE out there until I saw Soul Train and this. Lolol. Them some dancin fools!!!
OMG im 18 and i sleep wit mii radio onn at night this song woke mee upp out ov a dead sleep OMG i lovvvvvvve it its what 6 in tha morin and imm upp dancing in mii room sooooo funn lol
I just love all the different fashion statements displayed. WE are very beautiful and unique ppl. No one could move and groove like us, coolness is just genetic! Thanks for posting!
@SandySummers You don't even know the flavor of the kool-aid my man.,. It has nothing to do with stereotypes. It's called having a good time to some great soul music.
Who made you the Black Police? Wattstax was the apex of black pride and music and Rufus Thomas is one of the greatest showmen of R&B and is perfromance is classic DUMBASS
What's happened to the world,,,>! if you did something like this now it would end in shootings and god knows what else...plus the music would be shit! Damn the majors and their homogynized media bullshit!
@discoverydavid its awesome that u would wonder what would happen if this type of thing happened nowadays, cos it just did and it was straight up insanity.
search electric daisy carnival 2010 fence jumping and u will see total insanity.
@shittyutubevideos I was thinking about black America now...compared to then. Back then it was tougher but funk mojos like Rufus carried messages to be cool to...What message prevails now with the "gangsta"/"bitch"? There was once irony in these words with NWA and Public Enemy etc, but its become Frankestien's monster ...now all that is left is that being nihlistic is OK...music should heal not harm.
hi there, i was in the 6ts for 4 years, a young un i be, still listening to stax, trojan and tamla.was enjoying the scooter runs thru the 8ts.take care n best of luck with the docu. play safe x
ha, yeh, the body is a little older but the head isnt. i still like to strutt my funky stuff, and it would be interesting to know what the girl in white turned out to be.43 i am now.
its in ref to woodstock for the soul brothers & sisters. a day of peace & music...eventhough the riots were several years prior..it was a reminder to continue in harmony...with a lot of soul.
I love those punctuating horn riffs at the end, just so funky! Wish they'd keep on grooving as they had they crowd into it.
I actually used to have this on vinyl back in the mid 80s, stole it from my GFs (now my wife of 21 yrs) beeatch roommate who didn't appraciate good funk/R&B anyway.
This is sublime.

No! You can call it Wattstax or Wattstock.
It can't hurt can it? I was an toddler, when
I heard about the 60's riot. I'll tell you one
thing, it does bring back a whole lot of
memories's, though.
sandralawson18 2 years ago
No! You are not being mean. You are
telling the truth. I was only a toddler, when
I've heard about watts riot. Has something
to do with a cop hit a pregnate black
woman.
