The Maramros is incorrect about evil changing whether it will benefit you. Evil potions have a lower AOE than normal, which has lower AOE than Holy (which cannot be identified by equipping). a Holy scroll of magic mapping maps the whole level, a normal scroll maps a twenty block range, and an evil scroll of magic mapping UNmaps the whole level. evil wands have fewer charges, and evil books have less uses. Also, Endure Hunger is an amazingly useful skill.

Most of the flavor text mentions things about how to do it. Leap attack, for example, mentions that having it isn't worth having if you can't jump. There is no penalty for reading the description, and it almost always mentions the hazards posed.

Also, Diagnose tells you not only HP but MP and inventory items.

Quizar is rogue god, good for small weapons and killing.

Klaskov is fighter god, good for running in and doing shit.

Either dont approve casting spells, you can cast them though but yeah, it helps to worship because you:

1. get more hp and mana out of it

and 2. Get skills and spells faster

@VerbalProcessing It was the circlet. It was a helm of draining. In my experience Helms and Necklaces are the most dangerous to experiment with, there's an amulet of strangling and a helm of draining, so they can mess you up. Worst thing boots can do is make you really noisy.
