The Soviet Union was trying to turn all of South East Asia communist, we could not just sit by. This crisis, like all other crises in capitalism, is all about overproduction. Meaning that so much capital is being produced, but there are no productive outlets for this capital which leads to speculative bubbles and the like. If the government doesn't intervene, the system would self destruct. It's the same problem every time.
