He is just SO good. What a voice. What clarity. What authority. Among "connaiseurs" it has become fashionable to turn the thumb down on him. They're tone deaf! They should listen to rap and hip-hop! That'll suit them!
My God, you snobs here are beyond pretentious. Jose Cura is great, he has his way in everything - singing, acting, being, He has an immense stage presense and believability in everything he does, I would take him at his worst over any of those nameless, boring, dull 'ye olde school' singing-machines of which there are hundreds. That man owns the stage he's on and means every word he sings. Jose Cura deserves every bit of success he has - deal with it.
Does he not deserve to have a little bit of an ego, for Gods sake can you hear his voice.
A Tenor came to South Africa from Spain with a terrible ego and a very ugly voice. Little did he know, he was sent home before the first show. If you want to have an ego as a singer at least back it up
I'm going to stick my neck out and say that I consider this recording by Cura to be one of the best Rudolfos in the canon, and I don't say that ill advisedly. I don't care if his voice will only last a decade before it's clapped out. What we have now is something of rare perfection. Something which touches the soul and is a thing of expressive beauty.
Да, я тоже обожаю che gelida manina в его исполнении. Рудольф такой мужественный получился. Жаль,что с "C" Кура так и не подружился. Еле до неё добрёл и прижал
I like the voice. It is very exciting. All you purests can give up. The voice is exciting and I love it. There is passion here. In music, what else matters as long as the notes are sung well ? I don't want to hear your answer to that question. You cannot convince me this is not an exciting voice. It is a beautiful (tonally) voice. I like the shape and size of the voice.
@FISTRIG It is not a healthful technique, he sounds like Jonas Kaufmann. A singers most efficient tone, is also his most beautiful. That's all I have to say.
those who dislike his voice because they view it as not technically up there. Are you musicians or singers. If you are, can you explain your comments? Do you know what it takes to sing like this?
I want to love his voice, but his technique has deteriorated so much since when he first came on the scene, that I find recordings like this excruciating. He has somehow squandered a wonderful instrument. :(
Well, I like Cura a nice voice. But who could tell me, what is the last note, high c but is there something like two voices together and then only one again? like voice mix on computer? 3:54 :P
there is no voice mix. I thinh it is just that the voice went a little bit back . He was searching for space for the High note and he lost a little ping in that F.
He really overpowers himself sometimes. One thing I have learned as a singer is that a lot of times louder is not better. It only sounds better to the singer, not the listener. he needs to stop listening to himself.
Many great tenors started out as "baritones". Bergonzi started his career as a baritone - and even Rolando Villazon was told that he would probably do better as a baritone. What's wrong with a tenor sounding masculine? Jose Cure is a hell of a tenor! So was Bergonzi. And Villazon? He can compete with even Pavarotti and Domingo!
In order to become a respecatable tenor, one has to put tremdous amount of work into it and be dedicated himself completely. Cura has the ability to become great but his ego has let himself to skipped fundimental steps and gets carried away. He needs to be patient and be more consistant on embellishment of aquiring his technique. Villazon is one example who has ruined himself with his ego. Kraus has examplified how not to.
Not bad. I can hear his register changes too clearly but his diction is clear and his interpretation is insightful. It is a Tenore Robusto singing an essentially Sprinto role, however.
@donaldrose I personally feel that Cura has a sufficiently great number of spinto moments to prove himself well able to project the necessary lyricism over a large orchestra without straining or becoming vulgar. I agree his voice tends to favour the dramatico, or tenore roubusto repertoire, but frankly what I enjoy about his voice is the range of colours he can produce. Its not one dimensional like so many 'great' tenors.
how come he does not get fatugued(dunno how to say..exhausted...)from such "baritone" singing. I have heard him live and he has VERY powerfull voice, but still, its so hard to sing it like that. I like him couse he is different
well,he had concert in my country last week and got very bad review, something like "...the one who understands music could hear that this singer cannot sing any more just by hearing first aria..." and it was pagliacci. and last year we(i sing in opera choir)had pagliacci with him and we could hear that he is at his end. afcourse he can give concerts, but by "short career" i mean that quality of performance is down, bad...the voice is worn out....I like his voice though,as i have sad before.

How cold your little hand is! Will you let me warm it for you?
Why bother looking? It's dark, and we won't find it.
It's our good luck, though, this night's filled with moonlight,
Up here the moonlight could rest on our shoulders.
Please wait, ...my dear young lady, and I will quickly tell you
Who stands before you, and what I do,
How I make my living. May I?
Who am I? What am I? I am a poet.
What keeps me busy? Writing! And what do I live on? Nothing!

Well, he's a natural baritone singing a lyric tenor aria, but he sounds like a bass-baritone here. Way too dark and woofy.
