That was a classic staple of old-school RTS games, since they were 2-D and you couldn't move the camera around and the maps were limited in size and scale. AoE II sorta was the first RTS to break that mold of having units that were (relatively) to scale with the buildings.

Like many games back then, the producers had DOS in mind when they were making the game. Which means there tends to be bugs even if you play it on Windows 95.
