  • Thank jou for sharing!

  • I was so happy when I found this video on YouTube last year because it wasn't released as a single from the " City to City " album, even though I thought every song on that LP was a hit. I am in the process of trying to re-build my video collection that was lost in 2010. I can't believe my eyes as I read the new comments of Gerry's passing! What a GREAT loss ~ with tears in my eyes, I say goodbye to my Scottish 'brother' ~ your meaningful music will live on & be forever written in my heart ~

  • @Princess0na

Hodgepig007 has some beautiful videos if you want to check it out. He has this song with Gerry sitting at the piano singing this. It's so profound, I couldn't take my eyes off him as he sang it.

  • This is such a loss, unfortunately I didn't even know he had passed until I saw this page. His work is so amazing, , as a kid my mom and her friends always had him playing in the house, the car...and I grew up a fan from my earliest childhood memories. I wish more people now had the patients and intuition to experience his music and his message..Those that don't know it are defiantly missing out...R.I.P. Gerry and thank you for the memories and reflection you gifted the world with. :)

  • Now making the angels cry with your beautiful songs God Bless, Good night.

  • @tyrfau1 I have this wonderful image of Gerry Rafferty & Dan Fogleberg singing together a most heavenly song.

  • I love this. - Erkele

  • this is a very touching song written from the heart,,gerry wrote some wonderful songs,,this is the nearest thing to poetry,,baker street gets the headlines and so it should,, but gerry wrote much more than pop songs,he sang from his heart,,

  • This is one of my favourites, wise words from Gerry. RIP

  • this is beautiful, when u love someone special , just close ur eyes and listen to this song.

  • Thank you.

  • This is for my ex wife who loved this song when we were teenagers. We are both in our 40's now and I hope she remembers it

  • Hell Yeah I love this song, G. Rafferty could turn a phrase with with the best of 'em, both musically and lyrically, as for losing him young, well, what can you say, the man liked his juice! R. I. P. Gerry, ole son you ROCKED!

  • R.I.P.

Why did this person have to die :( Take justin bieber for jesus fucking christ sakes!!!!!

  • One of the best songs ever written on this world without any doubt.

  • Sheer larger than life, naked musical, vocal and songwriting talent with a tremendous power to move the listener!

Ah, those wonderful days 30 to 40 years ago when they just did it - no mucking about with several takes, stand ins, and overdubs. I'm not sure that we will see the like of them again. Yes, Elton John's recent comments about the current sad state of affairs in musical performance seem to be quite on topic.

Go gcudaigh Dia thu, a Ghearoid! Aussies for Gerry!!!! Check My Singing Bird

  • Great song of Gerry Rafferty, beautiful and sensational like all your songs.

    Gerry Forever!

  • Beautiful song.

  • Thanks for posting this. One of my favourite songs, ever. Got me through some tough times as a teenager.

  • One of the sweetest men I ever got to meet backstage, R.I.P.

my friend, your music will NEVER die, ever!

  • Great ,feel like I'm twenty again...

  • Am still reeling at Gerrys passing, am listening to his his songs as i write this, am touched that "whatevers written in your heart ' was sung by his nearest and dearest at his funeral, i so wish i could have been there to join in........his songs will allways be in my head.....

  • @sarpetnat21 I am a 54 year old ex-soldier, my tears are burning my face, I make no excuse for this.

    He was a lovely man!

  • @yorkie6687 . . ..no need to make any excuses. This song is so beautiful, moving and meaningful. I cry every time I hear it. Gerry, may you finally rest in sweet peace. He really was one of the best of us, ya know?

  • @yorkie6687 , May I ask why you should make an excuse ???

Music heals the soul Mate :)

  • @yorkie6687 god bless you

  • @yorkie6687 Thank you sir for your service...I do honestly appreciate it, and yes Gerry

was one of a rare breed...much like Ronnie Lane...pure talent...pure and simple! And in

my humble opinion, REAL MEN KNOW that tears are a natural release for human emotions!

People who have yet to learn that usually release those tensions on another innocent soul!

You sir, set a good example of how a mature adult might react...no excuse required! PEACE!

  • @kathykay2010 There are plenty of those like Gerry. They just never get too famous because of their goodness. One artist that comes to mind who you may or may not like is Edie Brickel. She sings from the heart and is beautiful all the way through.

  • Hey Gerry.....

you will never "leave the building"

remember when we strolled right down the line.....

    Pax Vobiscum..G

  • I still get SHIVERS to this song, my Daddy introduced me to it, but it also means so much more. I will always have a soft spot for Gerry Rafferty, and I think God does, too. What a great guy he was. Rest in Peace.

  • @MultiRainbowdust That was a lovely comment, well said my friend, I will be having this

    played at my funeral!

  • Gerry Rafferty, an amazing singer/songwriter and unassuming man, I would have given anything to have seen him live, never got the chance. My loss, will never not listen to him. God love you Gerry, you were truly truly talented.XXX

• RIP Gerry Thank You for the music!

  • RIP Gerry...such a great human being...and a wonderful voice....so many memories... Whatever's written in your heart

  • Truly beautiful!

Today Friday 21th January 2011, was the great man's funeral. Profoundly moving to watch his funeral on STV and BBC Scotland. Six members of his family - including his daughter - sang accapella version of this song. It was poignant to listen to them. It worked wonderfully as a hymn. God bless them.

  • @flyfifer51 he died on the 4th though?

  • @flyfifer51 would so love to hear that brings tears to my eyes already.

  • My heart is broken, listening to him since I was 14, the familys rendition was so lovely. Goodbye Gerry profoundly missed.

  • Thankyou Gerry for so many wonderful evenings of fantastic music. You articulated for the man I adored the words to say that he couldn't.. They will last forever. We are privilaged to have heard and seen you in concert. RIP "It's better this way"x

  • This song was beautifully sung unaccompanied at Gerry's funeral today by his daughter and five other family members .....at least we've got our memories Gerry...R.I.P.

  • Goodbye Sir,

a song master, a Bard, of yesterday

You found me, through your art

    Thankyou Sir.

    Forever through the future

    I will forever remember you.

  • Paisley will sadly say goodbye to Gerry on Friday just a couple of miles away from Foxbar where he grew up. His music will live on, thanks for the memories, RIP Raff x

  • I know Baker Street! And until now only this song of him, And Till now never knew about him anything... After having read the news about his passing away, I remembered the Baker Street and started to research on Rafferty... I was surprised, that he was a Master, !! Now I love the Song "Night Owl" and "Right Down The Line"; I even didn't know about the existence of these Songs¨! He was underrated ! He had to die to become known.., It is weird..!

  • I noticed that I own "City To City" just as LP - Today I got my CD and I was getting so sad hearing these songs released during my youth and how I missed them. How sad...Besides "Stealing Time" and "Mattie's Rag" this one's my favorite. .It's nice to read so much warm words and it kind of comforts me. R.I.P. Gerry Rafferty

  • :'( I grew up with this music. I had to let go of some of my tears, as I felt a piece of my fine youth slippin' away...

  • I am so sorry to hear that Gerry passed away. He was a brilliantly talented man who was at conflict with the fame that his work had brought him. I have no doubt when people look at his body of work, they will realize just how gifted he really was.

This song chronicles the end of a relationship in a way that feels true and intimate . Rest in Peace Gerry

  • @captainsoul1953

I think you are on to something. The quality of his songwriting - apparently mostly done on his own and largely without the real time ego-boosting adulation the others had - must surely put him on a par with the rock songwriting legends you mention below.

  • @corsica290 I always hoped Gerry and Bob Seger could have collaborated on an album together. Maybe in the next life . . . sigh!

  • Quite simple a brilliant song by a brilliant song writer.

  • This is a major piece of songwriting as good as anything by Dylan Paul Simon Lennon and Macca...well anyone you care to name

    Jim

  • This is my favorite Gerry Rafferty song...

  • This is myfavorite Gerry Rafferty song...

  • it's amazing to see what few people knew of his wonderful music - maybe he mostly kept to himself because of his inner troubled self - :(

  • Never heard this before, but it is awesome

  • At least we got our memories.

Don't know how many times I cried, and rejoiced to this song when my best friend died. Gone in the midst of life, too soon, yet with so many great things done.

Wonderful memories, all put into music by Mr Rafferty.

    An eternal thank you.

  • This song was played on radio 2 a few days ago, it was the first time i've heared it now i can't stop listen to it. Thanks to youtube. R I P GERRY

  • It's so sad, that neither I didnt seem to have time to explore his music before his death. He was talented and I like him as a composer and singer. That "Baker street" always somehow made distance to his other songs...I cant say why. It was like his "American pie" or "Year of a cat." Pls don't get me wrong, I dont actually know exactly, what I'm saying now.

  • GOD BLESS YOU GERRY R.I.P

  • My all time favorite Rafferty song. We've all been there and many of us know the deep scaring pain of relationship failure. Thank you Gerry for helping us through it. I'm teaching Gerry's songs to my kids. They love them which is proof that Gerry's legacy of timeless music for the soul will outlive all of us. We should thank God for sending Gerry - a welcome balm for the rest of us yet to reach our own journey's end. May our meager contibutions be in some small way a useful reflection of his gi

  • @ww2tribute Word up.

  • I'm having difficulty translating what's written in my heart. It would seem to be some form of pre-Aramaic hieroglyphics. I'm hoping that I'll find a way to say it all someday.

  • My personal favourite from the album city to city. Superb gospel-like feel to it and Gerry's unique voice is totally comforting. What a track - what a singer - what a loss... RIP mate.

  • I will never forget your gorgeous voice singing Her Father Didn't like me anyway when you used to play with Billy as the Humblebums - you wrote the most wonderful song the ark and I am saddened to hear of your passing - RIP Gerry x

  • Radio DJ´s around the globe: Play this song (from "City to City"), make it a global tune for the melancholics worldwide. Thank you!!!

Gerry, hope it´s getting better now, over there.

I stay in your debt forever, with all the relieving tears your song has made me shed over years - surviving my youth, owes a lot to your songwriting. And "City to City" bears some more pearls of a gifted musician. Don´t know, if for better or worse - but you´ll live on, in my heart and, I hope, more to hear

  • RIP G.R. my heart weeps at the sadness in your life and your far too early loss to the world.

  • This is in fact one of the most beautiful songs ever written. RIP, Gerry.

  • @Loebrich l think maybe it is the most beutiful song ever written, it came from deep in his heart, they are the real deal in any language,,,,,,bless you man that city to city album was an hard act to follow,,,

  • I love this man and his mind as well as his lyrics and music - always - dear Gerry

  • lovely. At least we can be comforted that he left us with timeless songs like this that many of us can identify with. RIP, Gerry ♪ ♥ ♪♪

  • I feel deep sadness and a missing piece in my life. Gerry was

number 1 for me in Music. His songs gave my life hope when it was dark and i stumbled without direction for a long period about 30 years ago. His music was something i cling to in the darkest hours of my life.

Most of his songs are for ever written in my heart, this is one of them. But No1 for me are Night Owl. I can listen to that song over and over. I send my blessings to the family, and i hope Gerry find the Lord and saviour now.

  • So wonderful, I have been a Gerry Rafferty fan since "City to city". Loved all his album afterwards. Cant really tell anyone else who could both write and sing such lovely songs. From his generation, I can only think about Eric Carmen to come near this.

  • If you want to hear a live version of one of Gerry's first songs (from 1971) which was recorded a couple of years ago as part of an Interview, click on my name. The track is called Her Father Didn't Like Me Anyway. He iintroduces the song and talks about the lyrics at the start. It's an audio only file, as I don't have the software to upload video with it.

  • what a voice

  • One of the greatest songs ever. Remarkable. Absolutely great great song. RIP, my friend.

  • Loved this guys music all my life now 49. Gone but not forgotton your music will live all my lifetime. RIP Gerry.

  • It's bewildering to think now much Gerry's music has touched me in so many ways. As hobbyist guitar player I have always considered him a top ten all time great. As my eyes tear may his family members know he will be missed by many. R.I .P Gerry

  • @Bigalwannabe I think the entire family have been overwhelmed with the messages of support since Gerry passed on. Thank you for yours.

  • Gerry, you are LEGEND of my generation... R. I. P.

  • Gerry, you are LEGEND of my generation...

  • Gerry, with this song, you changed my life oh so many years ago. Thank You!

  • RIP Gerry, as you are surely going to be missed by many who followed your career. Condolences go out to your Family.

    Terry in Florida

  • @wydtrkr thank you Terry.

  • R.I.P. Gerry, from Luxembourg

  • god bless you gerry

  • Hope you find peace at last my friend ....rest peacefully gerry .

  • Also, let's not forget Gerry's work as a record producer for Richard and Linda Thompson and for the Proclaimers.

    Enjoy Gerry's additional talents.

  • OK, folks. Enough crying. Let's just continue to enjoy the musical masterpieces that Gerry left us. Why have we only about 4,000 views on YT for "On a night like this"? This is a really beautiful upbeat romantic song and, could it be true?, is that a beautiful guitar solo by the great Richard Thompson?

One of the critics said Gerry had perfect pitch - not sure about the technicality of that - but he has a sweet natural tone and unique phrasing - just try to sing some of them yourself.

  • I used to have this on a cassette..I so need the CD..I forgot how beautiful this song is..

  • It's sad that this brilliant songwriter and a man with one of the best voices that has ever hit the airwaves never got the attention he deserved, except for Baker Street. But while almost everyone knows that song, they don't really know anything about the person who wrote it. Right down the line is another incredible song by Gerry. He had many of them. I'm actually surprised just how saddened I am to hear of his passing. I hope he and Brad Delp create some lovely harmonies in heaven.

  • @TheAvatarofSet I heard he chose to hide away, that "Stuck In The Middle With You" was more than just another song but how he felt about his life: "You're proud you're a self made man, And your friends they all come crawlin', Slap you on the back and say, Please .... Please... , Trying to make some sense of it all, But I can see it makes no sense at all, Is it cool to go to sleep on the floor, 'Cause I don't think I can take anymore, Clowns to the left of me, Jokers to the right, here I am..."

  • @harryf200 Great comment my friend!

  • @yorkie6687 Thanks. (I see we have a similar taste in music - nice to find a fellow traveller.)

  • @TheAvatarofSet It is sad. He was one of my favourite singers. Although Baker Street was his best known song, he's done so many songs over the years.

  • @TheAvatarofSet such a shame.........this is all we got mate, take your time to make your time. No heven, no Hell, just music. Peace

  • couldnt have said it better myself.R.I.P Gerry

  • You would have thought that he only wrote 2 or 3 songs in his life then you hear this for the first time and you realise what a genius he was.

    God speed....
