Just watched the show! The topic of special education is never ending...thanks to the Ten Min Fix Crew for starting the chat about it! @sugabooga83 and @kwagacucu I have been teaching special ed ( BEST JOB EVER) for 9 yrs in California and I would also like to see interested people come together and start an organization! Holla at a sister!
my brother grew up with this problem, nobody knew what it was and we always had to deal with the stigma of ignorant kenyans thinking 'akona mashetani' and needed deliverance, trying to educate people on what it was didn't help either, so to hear DJ mpenzi say, he liked it the way it was before just baffled me!!!!smh.....
@kwagacucu I teach in the US. I work in a public school which has a special education department that caters to those students in need, and still enables them to be in a general education classroom. I wish Kenya had more of what we have here; integration with other students in the same building, same grounds and not having separate special schools for them.
@sugabooga83 I see a growing opportunity here ! among the audience I see experts in the field, pple with first hand experience of the issue and others interested in the subject matter. Can this talking point transform into an action or organization ? just putting it out there. Thanks 10minfix guys for sparking a conversation that many shy away from.
@sugabooga83 do you teach in Kenya or abroad ? I was surprised to learn from the comments below that there was a special ed program in Nrb city I wonder how many similar programs are currently available. What has been your experience ?
Who complained about what's in the cups? A bunch of adults chilling on a weekend having a few drinks is hardly a new phenomena nor is it immoral/illegal. Now if a 12 year old walked into the room and somebody gave him/her a sip of brandy, then we can all stand up and bay for blood. Otherwise, just relax and share 10 minutes of guy banter.
Good discussion guys. A couple of things to point out:
For the longest time City Pri Sch in Ngara was the only institution with a "special class" for autistic kids. Because of exposure through the internet and western travels, as a country we are becoming more aware of the condition and doctors are accurately diagnosing it at Kenyan hospitals.
Medical and Life Ins was & still kinda is, a preserve for the middle to upper class citizen in Kenya.

OMG people! The American system sucks! Health care, education (especially the first 12 years) even, or should I say especially, the family. People may think America is developed, but it's a disaster that has already happened. Please, let's not glorify it. Foster care. homelessness, disability ... I ain't saying Kenya's got it together but the American way is not to be idealized pleeeaase. In my opinion of course.
good point on diseases we as Kenyan's rarely detected back in the day... One other example comes to mind. When our grandparents would start forgetting names or how to do things we assumed it was just old age or they were getting mad. Could it have been Alzheimers ?
Good discussion guys. Well can we now hear what each one of you is doing with your lives. Share perspectives on Job prospects, education, and even business, your own personal experiences and how it can enlighten those back home. Good show.

Yeah, death is still a taboo discussion with zaks & old lady. Tried to talk about my choice of cremation before & they didn't want to hear it...
