@MegaMiles43 what's funny about it? It's some idiot looking like an idiot...disrupting the newscast. I wish TV crews would tackle and beat the shit out of morons who do that.
Really liked this intro--always had a very upbeat and cheerful feeling to it for an otherwise bad news beginning. Those toothbrushing kids always cracked me up.
"News Series 2000" Hasn't been used by any of the stations since the early 90's. Now, WABC & KABC use "Eyewitness News" and WLS uses "News Series 2000 PLUS"
Oh, I understand THAT. I just remember that all the ABC O&O-ed ABC 7's (KABC-LA, WABC-NY, WLS-Chicago, and KGO-SF) used NewsSeries 2000 during the 80's and 90's.
until Lalo Schifrin raised his royalties to an insane amount. stations couldn't pay them, and that's where the mass exodus from schifrin based packs begun.
Interesting to note that in this clip Charles Thomas (who still works with WLS) is reporting from State & Lake - the current location of ABC 7's Studio.
Their studio has always been at State and Lake. It just was always on the 3rd floor of that building. So their studio has always been on State and Lake.
I asked that to the GM Emily Barr, and she said that WLS wanted to become more identifiable with their affiliation with ABC...that's why they became ABC7...They dropped Eyewitness News, because they felt that it divided the news with the rest of their programing...I guess tyheir thinking "Why call it Eyewitness News when it could be ABC7's News....HEY! ABC7 News!!!" that's what i gathered from the info she gave me.
I can see doing that, but sometimes it seems strange it is not Eyewitness News after it was for so long. WLS always seems to do things to set themselves apart from the other ABC O&Os (like NOT using that awful Eyewitness News theme). That is why they are still #1 in every newscast--the other ABC O&Os can't say that.
I know...i like how they're different, yet it's uniform with the rest of the O&Os. they all have a certain style, but they display it in different ways...well, with a few exeptions.
WLS is kind of different from the other O&Os because it doesn't have Regis & Kelly at 9 and delays network programming for Oprah at 11:05pm. I thought at some point Regis would be at 9 with Oprah at 3pm, but Oprah wants to keep the show at 9am where it originated.
Oprah is the one that wants it to remain at 9am on WLS. She said she could have sold it to another station to air in the afternoon for more money, but she chooses to keep the show at 9am in Chicago--where that 9:00am audience launched her nationally in 1986.
WLS in Chicago is always #1 in every newscast and I think every timeslot throughout the day. In LA, KNBC has often beaten KABC at times and KCBS has become more challenging lately winning at 11pm in May 2006.

Wow, Ron Rolland was the opening announcer way back in 92. Had no idea he had this gig for so long. He does a fabulous job.

well if they've had the music since '92, and he was 10 years old then, and that was 16 years ago, I'd say he's 26.

I thought WLS was using the NewsSeries 2000 theme (the same one used by ABC 7's KABC-LA and WABC-NY).

Oh I didn't know that. I thought they just moved in there in 2006. I knew Oprah used the ground floor but didn't know ABC 7 had their news there.
eirconet 4 years ago
Right. The studio is currently what used to be Oprah's studio. Then it was converted to stores, ect. Now its a studio again.
Their old studio was on the 3rd floor of the State and Lake building. That studio is still there just the old set has been taken out.

Does anyone know why they stopped using the "Eyewitness News" title in the late 90s? The other ABC O&Os still use it as ABC 7 Eyewitness News.

The reason for that is because of ratings. Oprah's show got show popular at 9AM her and the management of WLS-TV decided to keep it at 9AM.

KGO did not air Regis & Kelly until 1999
dingding3109 4 years ago
Some ABC O&Os didn't start airing the show until the early 2000s such as WTVD in Raleigh and KTRK in Houston.

Wrong. WABC uses the EYEWITNESS NEWS name and they are #1 in NYC. KABC uses the EYEWITNESS NEWS name and are #1 in Southern California.

WABC and KABC are #1 overall in news, but they do not win every newscast like WLS in Chicago does.

for the #1 and 2 spots in the 5pm & 6pm news

Locally I'm not sure if The View has beaten The Price is Right on Channel 2. Nationally TPIR beat the view consistantly since it's 1997 debut
