When I first heard this video a few months ago I thought "cool, the composer as a performer" but after listening to it again, now I think "COOL!!! the genius behind one of the best guitar pieces of the 20th century!"
For anyone who doesn't know---there is a lot of improvisation going on in this performance. Ever since 1985 when he wrote this he intended it to be a piece in which the performer could improvise and so far he is the only one I've heard actually improvising.
@oscarivera9 Check out Patrick Kearney and Edin Karamazov on the lute. Technically excellent, evocative performances. I can't tell if they play the same way every time or not but certainly some significant improvisation in their personal renditions compared to the usual.
I've been listening for several years and learning it for a month and a half and there's so much story that can be brought out in this one, it's staggering.
He might not be a virtuoso, but his interpretation is filled with emotions. That's the main part of a good interpretation. I hope to be able to play with such passion. Thank you Carlo.
He is obviously not just a composer but a guitar composer and a great one at that. Anyone who knows the guitar knows the difference between a composer that doesn't know how to play guitar and one who does. This has got to be the most sincere rendering of this composition under the circumstances. I'm sorry to hear all the negative feedback from what are probably touchy pretentious instrumentalists, as many classical players are. What a joy to hear what the composer actually has to say!
Respect him as a composer who did a great piece. But I'd listen to others to play this piece. His play is not as clean. A good song writer might not sing well as a good singer. Now this is the proof. Still thanks for this upload so I get to see this great guy.
@asongnadance clearly interpretation means nothing to you. There is no better version period. My god with all you technique junkies. Take the score and let a midi play it. Then it will be flawless. The man is a Master of the craft
@asongnadance I've heard many different versions of "Koyunbaba" ,live and recorded . This piece is often abused by players only to show their virtuosity . Most results are boring . There are many ways of playing classical guitar ,Carlo Domeniconi developed his very personal sound and composing style. He's without any doubt a virtouso player ,more than this he develops a musical drama ,he s a storyteller . That' s the point Where did you hear any noisy tone ? Me not . Clean your ears
@asongnadance "clean" comes before "sterile". Koyunbaba as well as more or less any music is about interpretation and the emotion in you. Preferring "cleaner" performances is like preferring laser-printed vector drawings to a Picasso painting.
I agree totally with osmixxxx in that in composing this Carlo did indeed get into the turkish mindset and yes he does play with a turkish hand (so to speak).
hi OoSauronoO, come on, the Li Jie video u saw, she was like 15 at the time of filming, on the other hand Carlo Domeniconi is the composer and had A LOT more years of experience ahead of her. I bet Carlo Domeniconi himself couldn't do this when he was 15.
cantabile is my favourite of all four parts, and this is the best I think I've ever seen it played.... thanks very much for finding/uploading these videos, there wan't much on koyunbaba on yourtube, only 2 years ago, now there is a lot of good material.
HOLY CRAP!!! Domeniconi is without a doubt my favorite composer, but having actually hearing him play now for the first time.... Damn, he's one hell of a guitar player too!

@asongnadance I am agree, but in my opinion, I love the musical feeling of Domeniconi. I think Carlo is as great composer as interpreter.

hi theDragonaut , lol, Li Jie is a guitarist not a composer. Your question is just like asking what has John Williams ever written XD
