One of the finest computer games of all time. Combined arcade action and strategy, both in what the pieces were capable of, and the battle environment (light or dark squares).
Used to love playing the shapeshifter! Attacking a player on a dark square always gave the shapeshifter an edge.
I'd love to see something like this come out on a game console
What a nice video by the way - Atari 800 is an interesting machine, and it's always fascinating to see the same games with different platforms. We did play this Atari 800 version with my friend once, and it was as fun as the C64 version, though a bit clearer because of so many shades of green, so it was easier to see which side is more powerful in certain squares. I put my Archon-2-player-video as a video response to you, I hope you accept it! Recorded from a real C64 while drinking,hehe..
There's an interesting interview with Archer MacLean in which he claims that the Atari 8-bits were graphically superior to the C64...see his Wikipedia page for the link.
No surprise there since Jay Miner was the key person to both the Atari 8-bit machines and the Amiga. Point being: the Atari 8-bits were the forerunner to the glorious Amiga, NOT the C64. :)
This is a bit of a bore to play against the cpu, but against a live person it's great. Check my video for a good example of how much fun it can be - though the players (me and my friend) are a bit drunk, hehe.
thanks for putting this up. i think i beat your game, though, back in the day. i'll have to relook the moves out (against the computer, which is an easier opponent).
Epic game!

The shortest possible amount of moves is 5.
3 to get on the middle power points
1 to teleport
1 to get on the enemy power point.

@jhorigan99 Indeed - that's just what I do in the game - thanks for summarising!.
Btw, my game still isn't perfect as I lost a piece; still, the number of moves is optimum. The optimum being just as you point out!

Beeps mean your are allowed to shoot, just to keep players from spamming the fire button.

This was great fun against another player. These days the AI seems too easy to beat, at least for me.

why has this game not been re-made?
do you know how rad it would be in HD, over the network?
there is TONS of potential here...

IIRC, Archon was inspired by the holochess game that Chewbacca and Artoo played in STAR WARS.
