Socrates has an ugly face too but he is idolized by many good looking athenians, seriously I would rather want to look like an ugly brute but have imense talent than to be good looking but talentless.
Michelangelo is like the Greek god Hephaestus (or Vulcan, as he was called by the Romans). Of all the Olympian gods, he was the only one who was ugly. But Hephaestus, being the smith & artisan of the gods, created works of surpassing beauty that even his fellow gods admired him for it.
Raphael used Michaelangelo as one of the characters in his painting of the school of Athens as Heraclitus, away from all others because he smelled bad and had a bad attitude,

It is interesting to compare that Leonardo was said to be an extremely handsome man. Did Michelangelo have some inferiority complex and try to win over Leonardo?
That's an interesting question. You can tell each other's personality just by their drawings. Where Leonardo's are light penciled and just flow, Michaelangelo's are heavily drawn and somehow much more "obscure". And yet, both styles are just beatiful.
Anothere fact is the "gay issue" on both. Never proved but always a constant. Where Leonardo was a more of a free spirit never paying that much attention to orthodox religion, Michealangelo was more of a suffering catholic.
they were both queens... it was a total twink fight... I read in a book about the history of the Sistine Chapel... they were both flaming queens... but it also had to do with views of the church itself...
Contrarily I found one 'true' portrait of him to be very striking. I couldn't understand the expression but the eyes were intense like the volcano's mouth. He may have not been of a classical beauty but his presence must have really resonated. He struck a chord with Da Vinci on their encounter and his rival (please correct me on this if I am wrong) left Italy just to get away from him.
So what if he wasn't beautiful? He was still amazing. Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, and I think that his visage is very handsome in his own way. Yeah, he painted the Sistine Chapel, that's more than any of us can claim.
Hmm, did you also know that Michaelangelo was also conceited? There was even a situation where he got punched in the nose for acting cocky, giving him that broken nose.

If Michelangelo was handsome he wouldn't have sought the same level beauty and perfection in his art.

I still love him and his paintings even if he is not that good looking, though. thanks for sharing..

It's natural to artists to forget about hygiene. They're to preoccupied with their art.

I wonder what Ubisoft will portray Michelangelo if he's going to be in the upcoming AC: Brotherhood or not.

I can't really say that I care much about what he looked like. It's how he could make others look that counts.

no wonder leonardo da vinci badmouthed michaelangelo that he was dirty and unaesthetic when they met

He doesn't look all bad to me.
Quentin Tarantino and other modern geniuses aren't exactly good lookers either.
But there are people who love them, of course, and definitely all their admirers and fans would have them no other way.

You're comparing Quentin Tarantino to Michelangelo?

So, Michelangelo was an ugly bastard? I fail to see how this fits into the category of science, or even art history...

He almost had a point to be conceited though right! Maybe it was just confidence...idk, he was extremely talented!
