However, my point is that we should not be attacking the medical welfare the government has set up. Pricey it may be, but it is still a sound system. I feel that, we should instead look into other ways of helping the people of Singapore, like subsidies on staples and cheaper education for the less well to do.

If you do compare to other countries like the United States, our healthcare is indeed much lower, this is also the reason we have a medical tourism sector. I'd hate to admit it, but the healthcare system in Singapore isn't much of an issue. I do concur though, that the PAP should give more healthcare benefits to the elderly or the less well to do.
@Shadowpython Singapore has medical tourism because of the quality of the services provided, not the cost. I don't think it is very cheap to be treated in Mount E and have your family members stay in hotels.
As for the US, they have medical insurances. Without insurance, the hospitals won't take in those patients so the insurance covers the cost.

Sad... Does she really know that it is really costly even it is subsidised? One CT scan cost $270+ cash... + urine tests + consultation fee ++ easily $450 and this is only one time cost. Really can't afford, you know. That's why it is said that one can die but cannot get sick... People up there earning so much.... so, no worry. What is $400+ to them?

Low and manageable is a relatively term. For example:
(1) You make SGD 15,000 per month = $200 for 12 weeks medication is low and manageable.
(2) You make SGD 1,000 per month = $200 is very high and expensive.
She may not be wrong. Just out of touch with quite a big part of our population.

Shadowpython may be u a damn rich and unfortunately that most singaporean are not as rich as you. Don't use some other countries to compare. If you like to compare, do you compare the salary of the MP? Do you compare US have the social welfare?Do you compare the have speech and press freedom? We are live and stay in singapore. we have to think the majority of the singaporean and ask them how they feel. This is the main point.

@hldemoeatshit I am not rich by any standards, I often have to search my bank account for small change just to pay for medical fees. However, my point is that we should not be attacking the medical welfare the government has set up. Pricey it may be, but it is still a sound system. I feel that, we should instead look into other ways of helping the people of Singapore, like subsidies on staples and cheaper education for the less well to do.

Guys instead of attacking her, would you also take into account why she said it was 'relatively low'? If you do compare to other countries like the United States, our healthcare is indeed much lower, this is also the reason we have a medical tourism sector. I'd hate to admit it, but the healthcare system in Singapore isn't much of an issue. I do concur though, that the PAP should give more healthcare benefits to the elderly or the less well to do.

@Shadowpython Singapore has medical tourism because of the quality of the services provided, not the cost. I don't think it is very cheap to be treated in Mount E and have your family members stay in hotels.
As for the US, they have medical insurances. Without insurance, the hospitals won't take in those patients so the insurance covers the cost.

PAP have done a great job to prevent most of the citizen from losing their job during last 2 year economy crisis. Singapore need lot of reserve inorder to deal with such crisis and they should not be spending too much on us but on the country instead because Without country there will be no us. everytime my friend took the medicine herceptin for breast cancer, it cost her $1,900 for a 3 week cycle. no subsidies for this medicine cuz it is not a "common drug." this is low to you, but very high for her and her family. Girl... you don't know what is going on out there !!

IN Taiwan the health care system is ,everyone every month pay SG$35.5,one year only SG426,two year ago i went to CCK dentist ,this money is not enough to pay 1 time dental!!!!!!!
which cost me SG$500!all the 3 dentist is fully book!

i study in the united states and i know how amazing the healthcare back home is compared to here. i think living abroad has really opened my eyes to how amazing singapore is. and i think if you ask majority of my peers here in new york and in london, they would agree with me. there is really no comparison in terms of heath care costs because its just so outrageous here.
