This film is Meades at his best. Fantastically written, nobody compares to Meades on tv nowadys.

This is great stuff, an attempt to make "North Sea Culture" just as recognizable as "Mediterranean Culture". I think he misses a point in relation to Belgium. Belgium's big problem is precisely that it's split between Flemish North Sea culture and cosmopolitan French culture. You can't really bridge that divide without destroying one of those cultures.

Has anyone read any of his books? I'm reading 'Pompey' at the moment, and it's absolutely hilarious, with exactly the sort of vocabulary you'd expect from Meades.

Yes; Meades is a treat. I watched a couple of his takes, Magnetic North, etc.. The language and the spiell first attracted me. No one writes as well or as wittily or as erudite and entertaining as Meades. He's more than a 'bit of a poet' -- he also knows in a very scholarly way what he is talking about. Who else on TV could you compare him to? And what's even better; he hates the same things I hate... Now I've said everything....! I hope the BBC reads this! He's even better than Dave Allen!
