No. The pendant is NOT necessary to progress. No matter what ANY guide tells you. I know this because I still pick up the ol' controller every few weeks and pull speed run. This fact, along with what a few villagers say about it, lead me to believe that it is in fact a cruel joke. Although, that last statement was purely an opinion.

I'm not at all sure about this because I haven't played this since, well, 1994 or whatever but i think there was some kind of cursed item at some point somewhere in the game. Maybe another pendant. Maybe one pendant increases attack and the other makes you receive more damage or something similar. I really can't remember the specifics anymore.
