People had more freedom because the politicians were restricted with their spending. If they didn't have the gold reserves they didn't have money, and raising taxes isn't popular. Now, in today's world, politicians get as much money as they want for any initiatives/programs/wars without raising taxes but at the expense of the USD. The moral hazard insane!
