@ttristann Just signed up for netflix and that was the first thing I watched on it :) Nice to be able to view a good documentary online and push pause to look up commentary videos on a game or some fact on wikipedia.
Brilliant game! I wish I could think like that! Unfortunately, I had to give up chess because it gave me insufferable headaches every game I played. No fun in that (and few games won)...

GM Larry Evans passed away in November of 2010. The New York Times wrote about is life and chess career. The article is available by Google search: Larry Evans US Chess Champion. Not only did GM Evans help Fischer in the Spassky match, but earlier encouraged Bobby to finish My 60 Memorable Games, and actually wrote a good portion of the prose introductions to the games. He was a four time US Championship winner, and great friend of chess. Can we see some of Evan's games?
GM Larry Evans was Bobby's second at the Spassky match. GM Evans was a strong GM who won the US Championship several times. In the mid 1960s US Master Ken Smith of Smith-Morra Gambit fame, convinced GM Evans to move from the East coast to Las Vegas. Smith had a Chess Van with pieces on top. He and Evans would travel around to events, simuls etc. in the Chess Van. GM Evans was a good friend of Fischer's, and excellent writer, and a gentleman. Last I know, he is retired in San Diego.
Fischer's e4 is the best move ever in my opinion.it is the most elegant, beautiful and full of tactical ideas move and so on.tell me another move that can stay versus that e4.Fischer should have been IMMORTAL.
It almost makes me sad watching how calculating Fischer was when you consider his vanishing act from the Chess scene. The game would be much more ubiquitous in the West if he had stuck with it. Imagine if he kept playing, he would of produced so much more beautiful games.
this game is so unlike fischer's usual style. it's like he already knew the notation and just played from memory. spassky was never given the slightest opportunity for counterplay and fischer just slowly ramped up the pressure.
What is left unsaid by this nice video is that this game is widely regarded as one of the best games of the century! Fischer beat Spassky playing c4, playing a Queens Gambit Declined, and playing Spassky's favorite variation. What's left ... blindfolded? Fischer was the greatest player in the world at this time, period.
I've done a lot of reading about this particular game written by the greatest living chess minds. Bottom line, one of the most beautiful games of the 20th century, and definitely in the top five. Me, I play this game over and over Fischer's play is so effortless but deep and elegant.
So why/where did Spasky actually lose control of the position. Did he make a particularly poor move somewhere? Or were one of Fischer's early moves a "novelty"?
So you've determined that Black's second move in the Queen's Gambit Declined is a losing move?? That's a pretty amazing feat of analysis! Congratulations! :)
I really dont like youtube'd chess games/tutorials/analysis, where the time bar is fixed to certain points. If i wish to review a certain point, i am forced to move back to x minutes before that position.
Im not sure if this is something you can change for future kings crusher but it would be great as you do fantastic analysis.
Agree. But what can he do about it? I think it's a youtube problem. Maybe the reason is that theres not much visual change going on in the video showing the board all the time.
C4 IS known as English opening. There is nothing unusual about it.Kingcrusher, will you show us more games which Fischer lost?Say,his bouts against USSR champion Efim Geller.
I don't think you need to instruct kingcrusher about C4 being the english, it's obvious he knows his chess. In fact, C4 IS extremely unusual for Fischer who almost always played E4.
I don't know too much about chess but I've heard about this match-up before. Your commentary was fun to listen to and it helped make sense of what's still a pretty intimidating game for me!
Korchnoi had warned Spassky's camp that Fischer might use other openings beside PK4 and that Spassky should prepare for this but no one listened.

( a6 L.. Dxb2 0-0+= ) Lxa6 Dxa6 ( Schwarz hat gute Kompensation )

I'm sorry I had a little brain fart there. :( You obviously said d4 but my brain read d5.
md65000 2 years ago
that's what i thought, but d5 is also not necesseraly the second move in the queen gambit declined variation
medra1980 2 years ago
Fischer should have played c4 more often!

Con c-4,Fischer jugo una apertura inglesa que desconcerto a Spassky.El juego de Fischer es combativo, agresivo y ...genial.

Fischer/Spassky, chess, 1972, lacked the epic grandeur of krazyassjoe/his niece Karlie, Hungry Hungry Hippos, 2009.

at 8.17, if Re7 and the ensuing exchange occurs, black would actually equalize.

That exchange would never happen. An Rf8 response to that would be crushing.
