There is a difference between "Satan Worship" (as you are talking about), and Satanism. Satanism is the complete opposite of Christianity. They don't believe in any God or a Hell. The use of dark and evil imagery is most likely used to offend.

I think black metal is an exemplary case of a minority shaping the image of the majority. Most black metal fans are propably not satanists, but because some have taken radical actions and it's those actions who became popular so the whole scene got labeled as satanists where propably it's a minority of black metal fans who seriously practice satanism.
