  • @III280zIII Without scientists you wouldn't have been able to type that brainless message.

  • can I have some of that helium? 8D

  • Its a pity this segment was dumbed down so much, I suppose its good for kids to spark interest. Would really have enjoyed hearing more technical details regarding the method used to liquefy gaseous helium, cooling it down from 4K to 1.9K and how the liquid nitrogen plays into the whole process.

  • Hot and Smart only at cern

  • i think science and that milf baby are both sexy

  • Isn't that where john connor and his mom went with the terminator to escape the T-1000?

  • lol

  • So the cooling is to balance the active materials so it will not blow, its just like out in space the cold try to balance the activsytem of the planet or star that is why the prosses goes slow and that is why we are lucky to be alive but for how long?

  • No. The cooling is required to keep the magnets which control the beams of protons in a super-conducting state. In that state they operate with much less energy expended than room temperature magnets would require. The whole operation would be hugely larger were it not for superconducting magnets.

  • Words can't describe the awesomeness of this whole endeavour! Yay for CERN and science :D

And btw. the song is very fitting. This machine is a testimony to what we as a species can achieve, when we work together. There's no turning back now, the future awaits...

...'cause we're all made of stars :P

  • That tree next to Paola in the beginning is working overtime converting all that nitrogen around it. :-D

It must be the busiest tree at entire CERN. lol

  • Don't trees convert carbon dioxide?

  • @sammywilloe

Your right, ive mixed that up :-D

But to my defence ive just read that trees indeed also process nitrogen , with the help of bacteria that live on them, into nitrate which they need to create certain proteins.

So luckily i was not 100% wrong :-D

  • Hmm, I didn't know that. Cool beans.

  • hey yoh, I'm working on this industrial gases, making Nitrogen both in Gas and Liquid form. You betcha hell I know how it's really ultra cool! but it's really is safe once you get to know it. hehehe...

  • Its re-commencing at mid- November isnt it? correct me if im wrong

  • @ste96en

It was restarted last night :-)

You can follow everything on CERN'S twitter account

  • I can wait to hear the results

  • Ya i would like to play around wit that machine and crash stuff into each other at a gazillion mph.

  • <3 science

  • I realize this may be too loaded of a question to answer in a mere 500 characters, but how many engineers in how many different specializations did it take to design that?

  • Around 6. But they worked nights too.

  • Um... What does the working nights have to do with this?

  • It was a fucking joke.

  • Is that different from a fish-slap joke?

  • In that it doesn't mention fish or slapping, yes.

  • Is a fucking joke what it's called when something funny happens during sex?

  • No - its fucking as emphatic expletive, not verb or adjective.

    Pay fucking attention.

  • Well I'm really fukkin' sorry! Fukkin jeeze!

What's the word for it, then, when something funny happens during sex? It needs a word.

  • I could have Laurel & Hardy and the Marx brothers cracking jokes from the Simpson's writers and I wouldn't notice.

  • Nothing short of amazing.

  • fantastic... but this is just a biggining of a big surprise...

  • By brain explodes just by thinking of how much thought has gone into this project. Beyond impressive.

  • Hope it doesn't break down again.

  • OH, it broke down? As I recall it didn't actually break down, they just had too many helium leaks.

  • News update: First injection test today!

  • this video reeks of AWESOME, with a subtle hint of WIN!!

  • Haha, funny twitch at 2:01

  • The song at the end is Moby, We are all made of stars.

  • The beginning looks like cheesy music video lol

  • What is the song at the end?

  • Wow.. how long did it take to build this entire installation? It seems I didn't hear anything about the LHC until they were about to turn it on.

  • I think it's been about 15 years.

  • When the LHC produces a Higgs boson, it will also cause a temporal anomaly which sends the particle back in time about 14.3 billion years resulting in the creation of the universe.

  • Comment removed

  • except the universe was already around 14.3B years ago

  • i would like to have sex with that girl inside the large haldron collider

  • When are they going to actually fire this baby up and collide some particles?

  • That's one hell of a big cappuccino machine!

  • I'm sorry, I know this is off-topic but that women was a real bow-wow.

  • I'm sure that fact will never be a real issue for you.

  • How true. OK, so what do we have in common. You know, I'm more than just 'that.'

  • scientist chicks are usually not the most attractive lol

  • I disagree.. the accent, and probably a doctorate... brains!! ... I'd say foxy actually in a sophisticated way. Have you ever spoken to a conventional model, you go off them when they open their mouths!

  • Oh I know! I'm attracted to her, though usually girls I'm attracted to aren't generally accepted as "attractive", if you know what I mean lol..

  • Outstanding! Thanks for this video Best0fScience. I hope they get LHC cranked up without any further glitches. We live in exciting times!

  • I agree.

  • This is so cool, I would love to work there :)

  • Oh, now it makes sense. They try to find the god-particle amidst those clouds.

  • that looks like a lot of COv2

  • Very cool!

  • Science = LHC

Fundies = Puff the magic dragon... deity.. sorry

Science 1 - Fundies never had anything

  • LOL. She says "I hope its really harmless' AFTER she comes out of the cloud. :)

Good video, thanks for the upload

  • i wanna go work there!!

  • They cool the Whole ring down to absolute zero?! That blows my mind!!!!

  • well as close as they can get :P

  • The Europeans can stuff anything into anything. "I have to tape the LHC special today. Thank goodness my zipper pants from the 80s are clean and ready!"

  • I'll take your finest food stuffed with your second finest.

  • Yer f*ckin A right it is.

  • the SSC would have deezed that thing

it would be nice to see the LHC operate successfully

until it does what it should

    it's not that cool

  • ..... those helium tanks are huge. You know... just in case no one noticed. XD But seriously, that's awesome.

  • i need to get me one of those large hard on colliders :p

  • Fermilab is for sale

  • yeah, could chip in a few dollars around the neighbourhood & use it to keep the beers & meat cool for the BBQ...

...oh, and also for discovering cool things about the nature of matter & energy & the origins of the universe when there are no BBQs on... which would be cool, because that would give us something to discuss while drinking ;-P LOL

good idea mate... i like your thinking

  • The Large Hadron Collider Is BadAss

  • uh... the "evolutionists" dont want to prove evolution with the lhc. if anything they want to prove the big bang, those are two different theories.

  • whow, is there a map to the point of the lala land where you live? must be pretty deep within.

  • What lie? Science is doing something, what are YOU doing? Go read your book, silly, let sane people do what they do best.

  • What? What does the LHC have to do with evolution. Hope you're joking.

  • I have but one question: can the LHC make me a nice cheese sandwich?

I hold out hope that the LHC will allow for the discovery of new and exciting sandwiches, but if I do not see new and exciting sandwiches promptly then it was a waste of a great deal of resources.

  • why was this uploaded as HD when the source is obviously not?

  • Well I take that back, but you still can't read the LHC logo text.

  • What is the song at the end?

  • "We are all made of stars" by Moby.

  • I can't wait to watch the results of the upcoming experiments make all these conspiracy nuts look like the complete fools that they are. Funny thing is, they'll just move right on to the 2012 conspiracies like they weren't full of shit with their LHC predictions. We get it chicken little, the sky is falling.

  • Glad to see there's *someone* in Fresno who talks sense! LOL! J/K man j/k. I have relatives there and even lived in Clovis for a year back in the 60s.

Seriously, you are so right about conspiracy theorists. They don't miss a beat. I've yet to see one go, "Oh, the world didn't fall apart in 2000. I guess all that shit others were feeding me was just that - shit. Man, I'll never fall for that again". Nope. On to the next one.

  • Would have been a better report with her wearing a bikini as she stepped from the cloud. :=-)

Sorry, the opening was silly, but it is an interesting subject.

  • she has knobbly knees :)

  • Stop spamming your garbage on every channel. Are you craving attention that badly? Nobody gives a shit.

  • CERN is an international agency that has funded many projects. They have, and will continue to operate as long as there are resources to operate with.

If you're confusing the LHC with the company who runs it, the LHC has already been turned on, and functions properly. It operates, and is planned to continue operating.

  • Would you like to bet some money on that Rolls?

  • I'm not guessing and I'm not betting. Since you are asking me what I like; I would like you to wait two years and when CERN is still not functional, you can acknowledge that it will never operate. It is a blessing that this disaster will never get off the ground. Cheers.

  • What disaster would be averted anyway? =/ The large hadron collider will have the power to reveal many mysteries of the universe. It'll be a great step forward in learning about the big bang, quantum mechanics, dark matter and energy, and other things. That is quite the opposite of what you claim. It won't destroy us, it will guide us to a better future.

  • Provide evidence or STFU.

  • I have evidence but your manners need some honing. When you ask politely, I'll provide the evidence.

  • If you had evidence you'd be selling it to the newspapers... they would lap that up.

However, you are merely commenting on a video on youtube claiming to have evidence of a conspiracy, like about a million other nutters on this site.

You should be shouting in the streets selling pencils out of a cup.

  • rollsthepaul accidentally sent this to me as a PM so I'm pasting his reply here.

"Hi. This is the evidence. The proof is in the pudding, so when it has not run say two years from now, that should give the evidence credibility.

    Cheers

    Paul"

And he includes a link to

    evpreversespeaking(dot)com/index(dot)php?s=Large+hadron+Collider"

  • He sent the same thing to me and included the paragraph:-

"THe LHC has never operated as designed due to a myriad of problems. Parts have operated but not in the intended fashion overall. It was permanently disabled because it is just too dangerous and poses a real threat to planet Earth."

    He is clearly insane.

  • Please rollsthepaul, I would be most grateful if you would please provide your evidence supporting your claims as regards the sabotage of the LHC. I am looking gratefully forward to studying your documents.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

    GeeKay

  • I'll tell you what will happen "in two years". Ready.

The Swine Flu will be 2 years and a million light years behind you and your type. You'll pretend like you never said it was going to wipe us out or the vaccine was going to wipe us out or that they would force people to vaccinate or that they had concentration camps set up. You'll have complete amnesia about all that.

Additionally, you'll be hearing about discoveries made thanks to the LHC and ignoring the fact of your comments here.

  • Well said AncientAtheist. We Humans do seem to quite proficient at editing our memories. Selective amnesia!

  • Thank you for your reply but you must have accidentally sent it to me as a PM so I pasted it here for you.

I am however a tad disappointed as your evidence; isn't. A prediction is not evidence.

I had hoped you would provide some valid documentation to support your claim but "Reverse Speaking Reptilian OverLord Masters" plotting to destroy the LHC before Neburu hits, just doesn't seem too plausible.

Maybe Alex Jones has some valid evidence to back your claims?

  • I wonder just how much energy was used in this project and how many tons of co2 is/was produced? I wonder how much other pollutants were created in the process? This machine looks like it needs it's own full time commercial electric plant. Seems like a waste to me, I hope it turns out to be worth it with some discovery that leads to new energy or efficiency.

She's got a pretty hot body. I love those pants.

  • Nothing is wasted in the name of science. We might be tapping into realms never before imagined with these discoveries, just like when we discovered the mysteries behind electricity.

  • I am not trying to dis science, I just think it's somewhat over the top especially during a global recession and all the concerns about global warming.

Like I said, I hold out hope that this project could produce new technology and maybe even a new form of energy. But if it doesn't, it was a waste of a great deal of resources.

  • Do you know what its functions are?

  • If I understand it correctly, they are going to collide particles in the hopes of getting clues to the origin or the universe and answer questions about the formation of the universe. I'm not a scientist and I don't know what achievements can be done or how much new tech they might need to develop which could then filter down, sort of like the space program.

    How wrong am I?

  • What about acquiring knowledge for knowledge's sake? Do you not wonder how the universe works?

The LHC cost about $6 billion, for construction and experiments. People spend $100 billion a year on bottled water. The US will spend $145 billion this year in the "war on terror" and another $515.4 billion on the department of defense.

  • Knowledge for it's own sake is definitely a good thing. The way they describe it, it sounds like it uses unbelievable amounts of energy and with all our co2 worries and now with the worldwide recession... But as far as the money goes, I guess it's not that important because it started long before the recession and it would be a waste to drop it now. Ultimately though, it seems like there are plenty of low cost research projects that needs to be done. But I do get it and it is exciting.

  • the money used to build and maintain and run the lhc is less then 1/10th of what the us spends on military spending a year. consider the lhc took over a decade to build... that means per year the lhc used less then 1/100th of the military spending of the US. if you want to talk about waste, you should look at some of the stupid crap governments spend that doesn't result in anything useful. at least science brings the world new knowledge.

  • The numbers would be interesting but I would guess that the entire cost of the LHC is less than the annual military budgets of many countries. Should the LHC be a complete failure, unable to operate long enough to generate data, it would still I think be a success.

  • The amount of money and resources wasted on new ways of killing people is certainly astounding and disappointing. I certainly wouldn't object to shutting down the military to pre-ww2 levels and if some of that money went to science, I'd be delighted.

  • Prepare for unforeseen consequences.

  • Prepare; How? What consequences?

  • The intelligence of these people make Bill Nye look like a high school dropout. These are the individuals who advance our understanding of the world; rather than athletes, actors and musicians, our society should be celebrating these people.

Oh, and the scientist/technician at 6:58 is nice eye candy as well.

  • Edit: ...these people [makes] Bill...

  • i'm with you, but don't put musicians under the same light as actors or athletes... :)

    (physicist, guitarist)

  • I am also a guitarist; feel free to browse some of my videos, which admittedly are amateurish in nature. Like you, I have a healthy love for music and I acknowledge its impact in culture and artistic expression.

However, despite my love for music, I despise our society's degree of admiration for high-profile musicians. To concern oneself with the love life, legalities, interests and everyday actions of people like Britney Spears is extreme, yet our society is engulfed by such behavior.

  • Will you at least agree that the scientist/technician at 6:58 is pretty hot?

  • amazing stuff.

  • Man, I love the LHC!

  • Damn, i love science.

  • The LHC makes science look so cool. We need more publicity for scientific projects around the world in order to give science the respect it deserves.

  • Yes, people mock scientists too, which shows disrespect for science. If only people knew how much science affects their lives. (._.)

  • Have you any evidence to base your belief on?

  • omg ur so smrt.

  • I guess you will remain asleep until you pass away.

  • Have fun sleeping mister crazy

  • WOW - stirred up a lil hornets nest there I think-the very obvious truth often hurts...

  • how is what you say "the very obvious truth"?? do you have any evidence for your claim?

  • This hardon Collider needs lots of pumping to stay cool.

  • "This hardon Collider"

    o_o That's a weird image.

  • hardon..

A typo made by Richard Dawkins in The Greatest Show on Earth. :-)

  • You watched the lecture too?

The Large Hardon Collider, greatest show on earth.

  • What page number?

  • I am at work now, but watch.

A Universe From Nothing' by Lawrence Krauss

    watch?v=7ImvlS8PLIo

  • Seconded, what a great and funny talk.

  • You win!

Beat me to it... but anyway, most epic typo ever!

  • not only that but it's a LARGE hardon collider rofl

  • This is not a new technology, just greater magnetic field strength, and therefore higher energy collisions. What's significant about the LHC is the sensitvity of their 4 main collision point detectors. That and the data collection methods, use of GRID computing. And btw, it was an American supplied dipole that failed when they had a magnetic quench system fail, otherwise they'd be collecting preliminary results already. Here's hoping their improvements and redundant systems are near perfect.

  • Isn't near perfect imperfect?

  • @ caserus

    Nothing can be perfect.

  • Hey, Look, you perfectly spelled all the words in the sentence above.

  • near perfect is only slightly imperfect..

  • american here.

Lets hope america doesn't get involved anymore.

  • What?! Helium is the second most abundant element in the Universe... and yes we CAN make more of it right here on Earth.

  • we can make more helium, we just need some nucleosynthesis of hydrogen, what isotope you want, will vary how much itll cost, in either case, it would be expansive to make

  • I'm gonna laugh so hard at you black hole idiots when the LHC is fired up and nothing happens.

  • haha i just laughed so hard at your comment, i thought the earth swallowing black hole was supposed to happen like last september or something, so you can commence your laughing now

  • Even if it makes a black hole, it will dissipate through Hawking Radiation before it would have a chance to be dangerous.

  • Damn :(

I was kinda hoping it would accidentally open a stable wormhole and we'd figure the trick for inter-stellar travel.

Ah well, back to comic books...;P

  • Comment removed

  • learn some physics, will ye? You really think that by smashing microscopic objects together, a black hole wich can swallow the earth might be created?

  • How does it create black holes then?

  • I hope they will find clues for breakthrough technologies.
